The document discusses the design, analysis, and die manufacturing of a camshaft for a Lister Diesel engine. Key steps include: 1. Designing the camshaft using theoretical calculations to determine specifications like diameter, lobe width, and lift. 2. Creating a 3D model of the camshaft in Unigraphics NX_10 and analyzing it. 3. Extracting the core and cavity for the camshaft from the model to prepare a die, and generating a CNC program for the die. 4. Manufacturing the camshaft prototype using the die in a casting process.

 Camshaft and its associated parts control the opening & closing of
engine valves, also responsible for ignition system. Generally driven by
Crankshaft through timing gear.
TYPE LISTER DIESEL ENGINE
 In our project a camshaft is designed for PURUSHARTH PS 24/2 Multi Model PS24/2
cylinder stationary Diesel engine by using theoretical calculation. Power HP/KW 24/17.6
Speed RPM 1000
 A 3D model of Camshaft is created by using Unigraphics NX_10 and Bore MM 127
analysis done. Cubic capacity CC 1850 X 2
Stroke MM 146.05
 Core and Cavity is extracted for Camshaft prototype, CNC program is Compression Ratio 1:18
generated for both DIE. Fuel Consumption (max) 4720g/hr
5.7 Lit/hr
Net weight KG 510
Prototype is prepared in casing process.

Design calculations: 5 Total fore acting on cam lobe:

Consider dP= 0435 X d = 0.435 X 127 = 55.245mm
6
dS= (dP/8) + 6.35 = (55.245/8) + 6.35 = 13.255mm
Cam design:
Pmax = 0.60505 MPa (for cam angle Ɵ=135o) = 0.60505 N/mm2
Designing cam for PS 24/2 stationary engine We know that, t = K X dP X √(Pmax / ft)

Bore: 127mm stroke: 146.05mm = 0.44*55.245*√(0.60505/56)

=0.44*55.245*0.10394
 Diameter of cam shaft = 0.16 X Bore X 12.7
=2.41181
=0.16 X 127 X 12.7 = 258.064mm .
ft = (1 − )
 Base circle diameter of cam lobe = 3 + camshaft dia + 20 . ∗ .
56 = (1 − )
= 3 + 258.064 + 20 = 281.064mm . ∗ .

 Width of cam lobe = (0.09 X bore) + 6 mm 1 1.4

= (0.159954)
56 ∗ 2.41181
= (0.09 X 127) + 6 = 29.22 mm 1
 Taking angle between cam lobes = 1080 ( for narrow cam lobes) = 0.000752112

F = 1329.58N

• Parametric solid modelling(feature based and direct modelling)

 SIEMENS NX formally known as “UG-UNI GRAPHICS” • Freeform surface modelling for class A surfaces
• Reverse engineering
 NX is an advance high-end CAD/CAM/CAE package since 2007 • Engineering drafting
owned by SIEMENS PLM SOFTWARES. • Sheet metal design
• Routing for electric wiring and mechanical piping and more…
 NX is a direct competitor to CATIA, Creo, Autodesk Inventory and Solid Computer aided engineering (CAE) (simulation)
works. • Stress analysis / finite element method(FEM)
• Kinematics
 It is used among other tasks, for • CFD
• Design • Thermal analysis
• Engineering analysis Computer aided manufacturing (CAM) (manufacturing)
• Manufacturing • Numerical control (NC) programming

Design Procedure of Camshaft in NX
Advantages of NX over remaining packages  Step 1: Open NX !0 as new part file and give file name with path

• Fast, Flexible and Efficient Product Design  Step 2: Select Coordinate system after clicking sketch option
• Manufacturing Module  Step 3: Sketch Circle with respective dimensions then Extrude
• CNC Programming
• User Friendly Enrolment
• CAD/CAM/CAE package
• Dedicated Reverse engineering module (NX_CAM NASTRAN)

 Step 4: Repeat same procedure till Cam shaft completes 11 12

 Step 5: make Key slot and edge bend operations on camshaft
for the sake of finishing
 Step 6: Save the file as .IGES or .STP file format
 Step 7: Save .PRT file to edit dimensions in future
