To whom it may concern
I write today to recommend Laura Howard for your open position for a teacher of
English Language Arts. I’ve had the great pleasure of observing Ms. Howard’s
development from incoming student in my general literature course in 2014 to one
of the most astute students in my upper division course on American drama just last
fall. In the last three years she’s shown intellectual aptitudes in her content area,
collegial talents for helping others learn, and unwavering determination to succeed
through hard work. She is among the most dedicated student teachers in our BSEd
program in English here at Pittsburg State. She has already proven to be excellent
at facilitating learning as a student, which I feel is an effective predictor of her
future success as an educator. I believe that hiring her to fill your vacant position
would be of great advantage to your student population and teaching faculty.
As a student, Ms. Howard is curious, self-motivated and collaboratively-oriented.
Over the last three years I came to rely heavily on her in class discussions, where
she demonstrated that she is able to to any class discussion conversation in ways
that encourage other students—even though who are usually quiet and
reticent—to participate more actively. She asks compelling questions that invite
considered and engaged responses. She listens actively and encouragingly to
others. She handles constructive criticism well. She is personable, professional and
dependable in her interactions with students, faculty and staff. In my courses, she
often emerged as a clear leader during group work and helped others to stay
focused on the learning tasks at hand. She was an astute and insightful critic during
peer response assignments, where she professionally and honestly critiqued the
work of her classmates. Even when she had to give constructive criticism, she did so
respectfully and out of genuine concern for her classmate’s progress. These
personal qualities are not only useful in the collegiate classroom, but will also work
well in contexts where she is responsible for teaching, supervising and
collaborating with young people and other members of the teaching faculty.
Additionally, Ms. Howard is both committed to learning new pedagogical methods,
and eager to practice the skills she has already cultivated. Because I’ve already seen
Ms. Howard perform so well, I am confident that she’ll be an excellent fit for this
position.
In summation, I am happy to serve as a reference for Ms. Howard. If I can provide
any further information or be of additional assistance, I’d be pleased to do so either
over the telephone or email.
Sincerely,
Sandra M. Cox, Ph. D.
