16. a) An aircraft with a turbofan propulsion system is flying at a speed of 200 m/s at an HO
altitude where pressure is 60 kPa and temperature is 0 oC. The compressor has a
pressure ratio of 8:1, the maximum Brayton cycle temperature is 400 oC, and the
area of the opening servicing the fan engine is 3 m2, and the mass flow rate ratio,
defined as rm = (mt + me)/me, is 4:1. Where mtis the thrust generating mass flow rate
and me is the mass flow rate needed to supply the Brayton cycle engine. Determine
the thrust force generated by this propulsion unit.

b) A convergent divergent nozzle expands air at 6.84 bar & 427 C into a space at 1 bar. HO
The throat area of the nozzle is 650 mm² & the exit area is 975 mm². The exit
velocity is found to be 680 m/s when the inlet velocity is negligible. Assuming that
friction in the convergent portion is negligible, calculate:
(i) The mass flow through the nozzle, stating whether the nozzle is under-expanding
or over-expanding;
(ii) The nozzle efficiency & the coefficient of velocity.
