Cognition Interpretation: Managing Change Processes and Knowledge Resources

Managing Change Processes and Knowledge Resources discusses three main topics: 1) Knowledge networks and cognition, and how tacit knowledge is difficult to transfer compared to explicit knowledge. 2) HCI and cognitive models, specifically the GOMS model which describes routine cognitive skills as a sequence of operations. 3) Cognitive Informatics, which uses cognitive science theories to investigate computing problems and vice versa, such as representing human expertise in ontologies.

Cognition

• Knowledge networks and cognition

• HCI and cognitive models
• Cognitive Informatics

venerdì 17 settembre 2010

Knowledge networks and cognitions

Knowledge embedded in routines, structure, culture => cognition frames

Tacit knowledge hard to explain with tools => difficult transfer tacit than explicit knowledge

Sharing cognitive categories => better mutual understanding and reduce some ambiguity

Tacit Knowledge Network

HCI and cognitive models

GOMS cognitive model are Goals, Operators, Methods, and Selection Rules.

GOMS assumes that routine cognitive skills can be described as a serial sequence
of cognitive operations and motor activities.

Predict how users will interact is a useful tool for the system designer in order to
success in the IS implementation & design

Cognitive Informatics
Uses cognitive science theories to investigate informatics, computing,
and software engineering problems, such as information and knowledge representation in the brain

Uses computing theories to investigate cognitive science problems, such as memory,

learning, and thinking

Ex: processes of cognitive modeling and representation of human expertise for developing ontology
and knowledge-base of expert systems

Interpretation

• Interpreting data from brain image

• Interpreting the WWW : Semantic Web
• Hermeneutics in IS

venerdì 17 settembre 2010

Interpreting data from brain image

How neuroscientists and computer scientits collaborate to interpretate data from

functional (fMRI) brain imaging ?

fMRI imaging is tightly related with cognitive behaviours => understand and predict the working of the brain

Computer scientists have to analyze and correct (with different packages and algorithms) the outcome of
several stages of data => manage the knowledge

Interpreting the WWW : Semantic Web

Uses of the web today seeking informations with search engines => low grade of precision in information
retrieval

Semantic Web as an alternative approach to present the actual web content in a

more easily machine-processable form

Vision of a web where the meaning of information played a far more important role than today =>
interpreting sentences and extracting useful information for users

Hermeneutics in IS
In philosophy hermeneutics is the methodology of interpretation of meaning

Hermeneutics can also be used in design and implementation of information systems because is based on
people’s interpretations

So in research the advantage of this approach is the possibility to draw an organization's complexity, and the
researchers' role is to recognize what people understand or misunderstand
