5. Course Objectives
• Develop an understanding of operating cycles of internal combustion engines.
• Develop an understanding of factors that affect operation and performance of internal combustion engines.
• Develop a fundamental understanding of design, research and development for internal combustion engines.
6. Course Description
Engine types and operation, engine design and operating parameters, combustion theory, properties of
working substances, engine cycles, gas exchange processes, spark-ignition engine fuel system, gas motion within
the cylinder, combustion in spark-ignition and compression-ignition engines, pollutant formation and control.

Lecture, co-operative learning, discussion, self/group independent study, homework assignments, and
observing facilities at the automotive lab of the Department of Mechanical Engineering.
