Network Activity #2 (Cooperative Learning) : Instructions On Network Evaluation Scheme (Must Read)

This document outlines the instructions for a 2-hour network activity involving cooperative learning. It will be evaluated based on various criteria such as participation, cooperation, time management, and documentation. These evaluations will be summed and divided to calculate a weighting factor that will be used to evaluate group assignments and projects. The activity involves 5 tasks for student groups to work on related to analyzing circuits involving half-wave and full-wave rectifiers with resistive loads. The document provides the circuit diagrams and calculations required for each task.

Network Activity #2 (Cooperative Learning)

Date: 16/08/10 E.C

Duration: 2 hours
Mentor: G/Tsadik Teklay (Course Instructor)
Instructions on Network Evaluation Scheme (must read)

i. Every activity/participation/cooperation/discipline/coordination/time management /leadership/

documentation/report cleanliness and grammar/ during network (cooperative learning) session will be
evaluated out of 5%.
ii. The evaluations are then summed and divided to the maximum possible sum/total.
iii. The ratio obtained in step (ii) is the used as a weighing/multiplying factor when evaluating
assignments/projects submitted in groups.

Task/s to be performed by each network/group

1. For the controlled half-wave rectifier with resistive load, the source is 120 V rms at 60 Hz. The
resistance is 100 𝛺, and the delay angle 𝛼 is 45°. (a) Determine the average voltage across
the resistor. (b) Determine the power absorbed by the resistor. (c) Determine the power factor
as seen by the source.
2. For the circuit of Fig. 2-1, the source is 120 V rms at 60 Hz, 𝑅 = 20 𝛺, 𝐿 = 0.04 𝐻, and the delay
angle is 45° Determine (a) an expression for 𝑖(𝜔𝑡), (b) the average current, (c) the power
absorbed by the load, and (d) the power factor.

3. A controlled half-wave rectifier has an ac source of 240 V rms at 60 Hz. The load is a 30 𝛺
resistor. (a) Determine the delay angle such that the average load current is 2.5 A. (b)
Determine the power absorbed by the load. (c) Determine the power factor.
4. A certain situation requires that either 160 or 75 W be supplied to a 48 V battery from a 120 V
rms 60 Hz ac source. There is a two-position switch on a control panel set at either 160 or
75. Design a single circuit to deliver both values of power, and specify what the control switch
will do. Specify the values of all the components in your circuit. The internal resistance of the
battery is 0.1 𝛺.
5. Show that the controlled half-wave rectifier with a resistive load in fig. 2-2 has a power factor
of
