Lab Report

The purpose of the lab report was to observe the growth of bacteria collected from around the school when inoculated onto potato slices. The hypothesis was that some potato slices would have little to no bacterial growth if the area was sterile, while other slices may have abundant growth if the area was contaminated. The procedure involved collecting bacteria from various locations using cotton swabs and inoculating peeled and boiled potato slices in petri dishes. Observations over 4 days found differing amounts of browning and bacterial growth of varying colors and shapes developing. The conclusion was that bacteria is everywhere and the experiment supported the hypothesis, though the control appeared contaminated, suggesting ways to improve sterilization.

Lab Report

Purpose
The purpose of this experiment was to find out more about bacteria,
and to observe the development and growth of bacteria collected from all around the school.

Hypothesis
I think that some potatoes won’t grow little to any bacteria because the area could have
been sterile, meaning that area doesn’t have any bacteria. However, I think that a supersized
amount of bacteria might grow on some of the potatoes because the medium might have been
contaminated with bacteria when it was removed from the pot of boiling
Water
Procedure
1. Collect 6 sterile petri dishes
2. Collect 2 cotton swabs
3. Collect 6 potatoes
4. Peel the potatoes and cut potato into slices
5. Place potatoes slices into boiling water
6. Remove slices from the boiling water
7. Place potato samples into petri dishes
8. Decide where in the school you will be collecting bacteria.
9. Collect bacteria using a cotton swab.
10. Inoculate the potatoes in the petri dishes
11. Tape the petri dishes shut
Observations
11/15/16.
After 24 hours, the mediums didn’t have much change at all besides some browning.
11/16/16.
After 48 hours, all mediums were starting to brown some mediums were more brown than
others. Two mediums started to grow bacteria then starting to become yellow, bacteria collected
from the stairwell is yellow.
11/17/16
After 72 hours, All petri dishes but the control are starting to have an abundant amount of color
And a lot of browning.
After 96 hours, All petri dishes had a lot of bacteria with different shapes, sizes and colors. Also
the control looked like it was contaminated.
Conclusion
My group’s experiment meant well besides my control, The control didn’t go so well in our
experiment it looked like it was contaminated, this told us that there are many ways that control
groups can get contaminated. Also I learned that bacteria is everywhere and not just bacteria
some group’ experiment went well but they also collected some mold spores. The bacteria that
we grew were all different sizes no bacteria grew equally some grew pretty faster, others were
not so speedy. My hypothesis was great because I predicted that the bacteria would grow in all
different colors, shapes and sizes, and that’s what turned out happening in our experiment. We
could have sterilize our mediums longer. Another experiment we could do is pretty much the
same as we did but collect bacteria from different places like outside the school.
