Solar Water Heating System

The document describes a proposed solar water heating system for villas in Khopoli. The system would use evacuated tube collectors mounted on each villa's roof to heat water, reducing electricity usage from electric geysers. It would heat cold water to around 55 degrees Celsius. The system is designed to provide 200 liters of hot water per day for each villa. It would save an estimated 7 KWh of electricity per day per house and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 177 tons of CO2 per year overall.

Solar Water Heating System for Khopoli

Concept & Working principle

Solar water heating system has been suggested for bathing requirements, which will be mounted on the
roof top of each villa. The solar water heating system would help in reducing electricity consumption of
geysers on non-cloudy days of the year. The system would comprise of Evacuated Tube Collectors (ETC).
Evacuated tube is an assembly of two concentric, borosilicate glass tubes. The surface of inner tube is
coated with SS-Al-N/CU by a coating technology called “magnetron sputtering technique”. This special
selective black coating absorbs maximum Sun energy to heat water.
Gap between the two glass tubes is maintained at high vacuum which acts as an insulation to minimize
heat loss from the inner tube. Sun radiant energy is absorbed due to the black coating on inner tube &
the same is transferred to the water inside the tube. The water on upper side of vacuum tube becomes
hot & lighter in weight, and starts rising upwards into the tank. Heavier cold water from the tank comes
downward towards lower side of the tube. This phenomenon is called natural thermosyphon circulation.

Basis of Design and Assumptions

1. The occupancy for houses is considered as 4 persons during the weekend (2 days/week). Hot
water requirement for bathing purpose has been estimated to be around 200 liters/day/house.
2. Solar water heating systems of 200 liters/day is proposed to be installed on roof top of each
house. During periods of normal solar insolation, these systems would deliver water at around
55 deg C, when normal water is available at 26 deg C. These systems would be supported with
electrical heaters with thermostatic controls to take care of temperature requirements during
cloudy days.
3. The building structure is expected to bear the load of solar water heating system including water,
hot water tank and associated mounting structures.
4. The system requires the cold water quality to be maintained such that it’s hardness should not
exceed 250 ppm and Chlorine content should be lesser than 250 mg/l.
5. Availability of south facing area (about 12 sq. m) required for solar heating system on roof top of
each house has been considered.
6. The following picture shows an ETC based solar water heating system.

Benefits
 The solar based water heating system would be able to reduce grid power consumption by
around 7 KWh/day/house. The annual saving in grid power works out to around 2.18 lakh
units/year for 300 houses.
 The resulting GHG reduction potential would be around 177 tons of CO 2/year.
