Lesson Plan

Lesson : Amines (I)

Aim :

To study amines in terms of their nomenclature, classification, preparation and their basic
nature.

Learning Outcomes :

By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:

give the IUPAC names of amines

classify amines as primary, secondary or tertiary

describe the preparation of aliphatic and aromatic primary amines

explain the basic nature of amines.

Assumed prior knowledge :

Students should already be familiar with :

1. the basic rules in IUPAC nomenclature for alkanes

2. the concept of steam distillation

3. the definitions of Brønsted acids and bases.

Underlying Principles

1. Making the invisible, visible.

2. Enabling students to know what to look for.

Differentiation

Questions in the student notes are designed to enable all students to complete the activity.
The pop-up answers are provided for the students to view when they have considered their
responses. Worksheet questions include questions that require recall, understanding and
application of the new concepts learned.

Development of Lesson :

No. Steps Strategy Resources

1 Set Induction.
(Ascertaining prior • Teacher to get students to recall the
knowledge and structure and basic property of ammonia.
introducing lesson • Teacher to point out lesson objectives for
topic for the day). the day.

2 Student Activity Teacher to go through Activities 1-3 with • Courseware

the students.

Activity 1 : Nomenclature

Students get to study how to name and

classify amines as primary, secondary or
tertiary.

Activity 2 : Preparation of amines

Students get to view how amines can be

prepared by the ammonolysis of
chloroethane and by the reduction of
ethanenitrile.

Activity 3 : Basic nature of amines

Students get to study how amines are

able to act as a Brønsted base and why
aliphatic amines are stronger bases than
ammonia while aromatic amines are
weaker bases.

3 Evaluation • Students to answer questions in the • Worksheet

student worksheet on their own.

4 Extension activity • Students to read up reference materials • References

on their own.

2. Preparation of amines

2.1 a. CH3CH2NHCH2CH3

b. CH3CH2NH2 + CH3CH2Cl CH3CH2NHCH2CH3 + HCl

3. Basic nature of amines

3.1 a. It can act as a proton acceptor as there is one lone pair of electrons on
the nitrogen atom.

b. Order of increasing basicity :

NH3 < CH3NH2 < (CH3)2NH

3.2 a. NH2 + HCl NH3+Cl−

b. The phenyl group in aniline is electron-withdrawing and destabilises the

ion formed. Hence, the equilibrium in

NH2 + H2O NH3+ + OH−

lies further to the left than the equilibrium in

NH3 + H2O NH4+ + OH−
