C) Meet the Needs of Diverse Learners: The various Microsoft Office 365 apps provide multiple
tools that teachers can use to meet the needs of all learners in the classroom. The tools can also
be used by students so that they can choose the app that works best for their learning style. For
example, PowerPoint Mix allows students to re-watch lectures at their own pace, take notes
directly on the presentation slides, and save everything digitally to their OneDrive account. The
Mary McEwan My Internet Thing Project May 2017
app also allows teachers to see who has viewed the lecture and how each students has
answered the assessment questions. This immediate feedback allows students to focus their
studying skills on specific topics and teachers to inform future instruction based on assessment
outcomes.
Additionally, Microsoft OneNote allows students to take note, draw pictures, add videos and
audio files, and more all in one place in their online notebook. Teachers can then view their
student’s notebooks using Classroom Notebook and provide individualized help without calling
attention to the student. For example, right from my desk I can enter a student’s notebook, see
they need some help, and give them feedback right on their page and the whole class is no the
wiser. I use this all the time with my students who have anxiety or do not like to be called out
on in class.
Microsoft Forms allows teachers and students to collect data and then analyze that data
immediately using Microsoft Excel. This is a great way to collect feedback and inform
instruction based on the Form responses. As you can see there are many ways the tools
included in the Microsoft Office 365 suite can be used to meet the needs of all learners!
E) Assess the Efficacy: There are two major ways in which teachers can assess the efficacy of
Microsoft Office 365 with their students. The first and most reliable method is self reflection.
After teachers have implemented or used Microsoft Office 365 tools in their classroom they
need to take a second and reflect on their practices. Was the lesson successful? Did the tools
work in the way they should have? Did the Microsoft apps engage learners and help them
achieve the learning outcomes of the lesson? Did the apps save anyone time and were they
Mary McEwan My Internet Thing Project May 2017
easy to use? Reflection is an intricate part of the teaching process in order for educators to
inform future teaching and learning. In doing this, teachers can assess whether or not these
tools are an asset to the classroom and are benefiting their students. Secondly, teachers can
provide students with a survey (using Microsoft forms!) to determine how students feel about
the addition of the Microsoft tools in the classroom. As a teacher it is extremely important to
address your students perspective and learn how they felt using the tools during the lesson.
Activity (20 minutes) – Using their personal office 365 account, teachers
will create an event on their calendar, share it with a co-work to edit
(someone also at the training), invite one other person to the even, and
finally send an email with an editable word document attached so that
they can sign-up for the event.
Closure (5 minutes)- Although our activity for this session was to create a
silly event, I would use my closure time to talk about how the process
that we did could be used in the classroom as well. For example, you can
make a group of all of your students, create an event such as a final exam,
invite them all to the event, and easily tell if students have conflicts with
the time scheduled because you can access their calendar or they can
write directly on the event page.
Survey (5 minutes)- At the end of the session teachers will fill out a survey
to rate their session so that I can get a better understanding of what I
should be doing in the future based on what they liked and didn’t like
about the session. (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VTJBPMC)
Activity (60 minutes)- Teachers will spend the majority of the time
switching data and organizing their OneDrive account. This is beneficial
because they will never lose their data again! Many teachers still work on
a flash drive that can easily be lost, stolen, or damaged, but with
OneDrive you can get your data anywhere at any time. It can be
uploaded from any device and is updated in real time for collaboration. I
will also have teachers create a shared document that lives in their
OneDrive folder that consists of tips and tricks for them to access at any
time. I will point out that this is great for collaboration with teachers
when you don’t have a common planning.
Closure (15 minutes)- For closure I will have teacher first individually
reflect on the benefits of using OneDrive. I want them to reflect on how
they plan on implementing this into their classroom and how it will
change their current practices. Next I will have teachers turn and talk to
their neighbors so they can discuss it as a small group. Finally, I will lead a
whole group discussion about how OneDrive is useful in the classroom
and how it can make a teacher’s life a lot easier!

to rate their session so that I can get a better understanding of what I
should be doing in the future based on what they liked and didn’t like
about the session. (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VTJBPMC)
Activity (60 minutes): During the activity teachers will work individually to
set up their classroom page and to create a Yammer group. Teachers will
Mary McEwan My Internet Thing Project May 2017
set up their classroom page with their actual student’s accounts so that
they can use it in the future. The Yammer page can also be linked to their
classroom account so that students can access their group. Teachers will
be required to create, add information too, and share both their
classroom site and yammer site with the rest of the PD session
participants. Teachers can work together to figure out what tools are
best to use and in what way setting up the classroom and yammer site
will work best!
Closure (15 minutes): I would love it if some brave teacher would come
to the front of the room and showcase their classroom and yammer
account for us and describe a bit about it. If not, For closure I will have
teacher first individually reflect on the benefits of using Yammer and
Microsoft Classroom. I want them to reflect on how they plan on
implementing this into their classroom and how it will change their
current practices. Next I will have teachers turn and talk to their
neighbors so they can discuss it as a small group. Finally, I will lead a
whole group discussion about how both Yammer and Microsoft
classroom is useful in the classroom and how it can make a teacher’s life
a lot easier!
Survey (5 minutes)- At the end of the session teachers will fill out a survey
to rate their session so that I can get a better understanding of what I
should be doing in the future based on what they liked and didn’t like
about the session. (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VTJBPMC)
the students so they are able to see both what the student sees and what
the teacher could see. I would stress the fact that this app allows for
individualiezed differentiated instruction because teachers can go into
each notebook and comment on each student’s work.
Activity (60 minutes) – for this PD sessions activity I would like teachers to
play around with OneNote and become familiar with its features. I would
like them to create their own OneNote notebook as well as a class
notebook. By doing this they will start to see how useful OneNote can be
in the classroom. I will encourage teachers to work together, ask
questions, and explore all the resources OneNote has to offer.
Survey (5 minutes)- At the end of the session teachers will fill out a survey
to rate their session so that I can get a better understanding of what I
should be doing in the future based on what they liked and didn’t like
about the session. (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VTJBPMC)
quick form and then I will collect the data and show teachers how I can
easily export it to excel and using all the features that I am familiar with I
can analyze the data.
Activity (60 minutes) – For this sessions activity I will first have teachers
list how they could use forms and excel in their classroom, focusing
specifically on how they could have STUDENTS use forms and excel in the
classroom. I will then have them create their own Microsoft Form and
share it with teachers in the PD session. After they have collected
responses I will have them analyze and share their data.
Survey (5 minutes)- At the end of the session teachers will fill out a survey
to rate their session so that I can get a better understanding of what I
should be doing in the future based on what they liked and didn’t like
about the session. (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VTJBPMC)
great way to have students create something digital that’s more than just
a poster board.
Activity (60 minutes) – In this activity I want teachers to play around with
Microsoft Office Sway and PowerPoint Mix so that they can become more
familiar with these resources. I specifically want them to start and create
their own resource that they can use in their classroom either as part of
their material or as an example of student made projects. Teachers will
be encouraged to work together, explore each resources, and ask
questions along the way!
Closure (15 minutes)- For closure, I would like a teacher to come up and
share with us either a PowerPoint mix that they made, or a sway
presentation that they made and describe a bit about it. If no one is up
for sharing, for closure I will have teacher first individually reflect on the
benefits of using PowerPoint and Sway in the classroom. I want them to
reflect on how they plan on implementing this into their classroom and
how it will change their current practices, and specifically what they liked
and didn’t like about the programs in terms of user friendliness. Next I
will have teachers turn and talk to their neighbors so they can discuss it
as a small group. Finally, I will lead a whole group discussion about how
both Microsoft Office Sway and PowerPoint are useful in the classroom
and how it can make a teacher’s life a lot easier, especially when it comes
to activities, lectures, and presentations!
Survey (5 minutes)- At the end of the session teachers will fill out a survey
to rate their session so that I can get a better understanding of what I
should be doing in the future based on what they liked and didn’t like
about the session. (https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/VTJBPMC)

https://msdnshared.blob.core.windows.net/media/2016/06/US41207816.pdf
In the article “Keys to the Future: Align Workforce Readiness Skills to Ensure Student Success”,
IDC conducted research to determine the most in-demand skills in today’s workforce, and the
skills needed for tomorrow’s best jobs. We know that as teachers our mission is to empower
every student to achieve more, and how we can use technology to help students achieve the
skill set that employers are looking for! IDC reviewed more than 76 million job postings, 25,000
job board and staffing companies corporate website to identify the positions expected to have
the highest anticipated growth and wages through 2024. They discovered that the top 20 most
required skills across all occupations in addition to proficiency in Microsoft Office (#4) and
Microsoft PowerPoint (#16) included oral and written communication skills, detail orientation,
marketing skills, integrity and customer service orientation. This data helps encourage
educators to seek better ways to prepare students for life beyond K-12 instruction as the
number of skills those students will need to be successful continues to grow. By using the
Microsoft Office 365 suite we are empowering our students with the collaboration,
communication, critical thinking, and creativity skills that they will need to be successful. We as
educators need to take advantages of Microsoft Office’s online tools and professional
development resources to prepare our students for the new workforce!

In this article the author describes why one school district made the switch to a Microsoft Office
365 account. The primary reason? ITS FREE! Microsoft Office 365 is free for educational
institutions and provides all of the necessary trainings needed to jump start your district’s use of
the technology. But why Microsoft over Google? Well Microsoft is so intuitive, user friendly,
and many people are familiar with using it already. It was a no brainer to make the switch to a
technology that was so dedicated to education, was free, and easy to use!
