SUPPOTING POINTS FOR REVISION OF PAY-SCALE FOR PHYSIOTHERAPIST:

1. The post of physiotherapist in the pre-revised pay scale of Rs. 5500-175-9000 in

Group ‘B’ has been clubbed with the pay scale of Rs. 5,000-150-8,000 in Group ‘C’
and placed in the pay band 2 of Rs. 9,300-34,800 with a grade pay of Rs. 4,200. Until
the Third Pay Commission, Physiotherapists were placed almost on par with
Veterinary officers.

2. However, despite assurances by the Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry, the
Fourth Pay Commission has ignored the Physiotherapist. They were merely given
replacement pay scale of Rs. 455-700 to Rs.1,400-2300 at the induction level while
others, including veterinary officers got Rs. 2,000-3,200.

3. In the Fifth Commission, the pay scale of physiotherapists was marginally upgraded
while veterinary officers got a much higher jump. It had been suggested that
physiotherapists be brought on par with dentists.

4.Till the 5th PayCommision, the Payscale of Nurses was below that of Physiotherapist. Now
their Grade Pay is 4600 & their Basic Pay is also higher than that of Physiotherapist. Also
they get Nursing Allowance per month. The Grade pay for Physiotherapist is 4200 & there are
no extra Allowances.
5.Even after promotion to Senior Physiotherapist, the Grade pay does not change
6.Physiotherapists are not payed according to their Qualification & duration of the Course
( Bachelor of Physiotherapy BPT-4 ½ Yrs & Master of Physiotherapy MPT-2
Yrs).Physiotherapists (Both BPT & MPT) are paid the Diploma Scale only where the
Diploma in Physiotherapy(DPT) course is for 2yrs Duration only. At present DPT Courses
no more exists in any Universities/Board/Colleges India.
7.So a PostGraduate Physiotherapist who has Completed BPT & MPT has to study altogether
for 6 1/2 Yrs( 4 1/2 yrs BPT + 2 Yrs MPT),but gets the Diploma Scale as Salary in Govt Job.
8. Grades should be created for Physiotherapists as in the Nursing Field.Right now there are
only 2 legimate Grades: Physiotherapist & Senior Physiotherapist.
9. Point No 25.6 of the Department –Related Parlimentary Standing Committee on Health
and family Welfare Thirty-First Report on ParaMedical and Physiotherapy Central Councils
Bill-2007 ,which was Presented to the Rajya Sabha on 21st October 2008 States that
“ The Committee feels that all the Allied Health Professionals including Physiotherapists and
Occupational therapists play a crucial role in the field of medicine and Rehabilitation.
The Committee, therefore, strongly recommends that their legimate interests should be taken
care of and their existing Pay Structure may be revised according to their Qualification and
Duration of the Course they have to put in before entering into a Govt. Job”
We,Physiotherapists, request you to Kindly Consider the present scenario in the
physiotherapy education and our nature of duty and job responsibility and do the needfull.
