Ice Cube Insulators

This document provides instructions for an experiment to design an insulated container to prevent an ice cube from melting. Students are asked to brainstorm materials that could be used, such as plastic bags, cotton balls, aluminum foil, wax paper, cardboard, and styrofoam. They then describe the materials used to make their container, how it was constructed, compare their ice cube to a control cube, and discuss whether it prevented melting and how they may improve the design.

Ice Cube Insulator

What kinds of materials could you use to prevent heat from reaching an ice cube? Think
about insulators and how energy transfers. Brainstorm in your group, how you could develop a
box or container to put you ice cube in to keep it from melting. Pretend you do not have access
to a freezer and need to keep your ice cube from melting.
*Make sure you have a place in your box to insert the ice cube*

Materials
- Zip Lock plastic bags
- Cotton balls
- Aluminum Foil
- Wax paper
- Cardboard
- Styrofoam
- Newspaper
- Rubber bands
- Masking tape

What materials did you use? Why did you use these materials?

Describe your method for setting up your ice cube container.

Results
Compare your ice cube with the control ice cube. Draw a picture.

Was your container able to keep the ice cube from melting? Why or why not?

What are some things you would do differently when making your box if you could do this
again?

You are going to be presenting your results to the class. Write down some important things
about the success of your ice cube box that you are going to share.
