Damage stability

SOLAS REQUIREMENTS:
¢ Damage control plan
¢ Damage control booklet
¢ Damage stability booklet
¢ All passenger ships regardless of size since 1974
¢ Dry cargo ships >100m constructed after 1/2/92
¢ Dry cargo ships 80m to 100m constructed after 1/7/98
¢ All ships regardless of size constructed after 1/1/09 (new probalistic damage stabilty as per
SOLAS)
DAMAGE CONTROL PLAN CONTENTS:
¢ To be in Solas official language (Eng,Fr,Ch,rus,Spa)
¢ Scale 1:200
¢ Plan view of each deck and transverse section showing wt boundaries, location of crossflooding
systems,means to control flooding.
¢ RORO ramps and doors wt closings
¢ Location of doors in shell of ship, position indicators, leakage detection and surveillance devices,
¢ Location of wt closing appliances above bulkhead decks
¢ location of bilge & ballast pumps, valves, pipes, ducts, tunnels if any through which limited
progressive flooding is accepted by administration.
DAMAGE CONTROL BOOKLET:
¢ Gen instructions for controlling the effect of damage like closing all weather tight and water
tight appliances.
¢ Establishing location and safety of persons
¢ Sounding tanks & compartments for finding rate of flooding
¢ Caution regarding correcting list &trim by liquid transfer
¢ FSE which may be created
¢ Pump capacity and piping diagram
¢ Operating crossflooding systems
¢ Location of non wt openings through which progressive flooding may take place
¢ Results of subdivision /damage stabilty analysis
DAMAGE STABILITY BOOKLET CONTENTS:
¢ Gen description of ship including lightship data
¢ Instructions on use of booklet
¢ A plan showing Water tight compartments, closures, vents, downflooding angles and allowable
deck loadings
¢ Hydrostatic curves and tables
¢ Capacity plan showing capacities, vertical longitudinal and transverse CG of stowage spaces and
tanks
¢ Tank sounding tables showing capacities, vertical CG, LCG,FSE data.
¢ Loading restrictions such as Max KG,curves that can be used to determine compliance with
applicable intact and damage stabilty criteria
CONTINUED:
¢ Examples of loading conditions and survival criterias
¢ Brief description of calculations involving assumptions
¢ Precautions for preventing unintentional flooding
¢ Any crossflooding arrangements data
¢ Procedure for investigation of damage stability
¢ Location of fixed ballast and amount
¢ Floodable length curve-This curve will give indication for the length of any compartment in
order to have the vessel flood up to the margin line when compartment is damaged.
¢ Probalistic damage stability(ref IMO msc 58 and msc A265 )
¢ RORO stability with water on decks(Stockholm agreement)
WT BULKHEADS ON PASSENGER SHIPS:
¢ The deterministic regulations for passenger ships in SOLAS were such that, based on the
assumed damage scenario (i.e. one-compartment or group of compartments flooding) according
to the ship’s factor of subdivision (function of length, number of passengers and other
elements), the maximum permissible length of a compartment (between two adjacent
bulkheads: subdivision) is obtained, which should ensure the ship remains afloat and stable.
WHICH SHIPS ARE COVERED BY PROBALISTIC DAMAGE STABILITY REGS SOLAS:
¢ Dry Cargo Ships (L>80 m):
¢ • Container Ships
¢ • RoRo Cargo ships
¢ • Car Carriers
¢ • General Cargo ships
¢ • Bulkcarriers having reduced
¢ freeboard and deck cargo
¢ (IACS Unified interpretation no. 65)
¢ • (Cable Laying Vessels)
¢ All Passenger Ships:
¢ • Pure Passenger Ships
¢ • RoRo Passenger Ships
¢ • Cruise Vessels
WHICH SHIPS ARE NOT AFFECTED:
¢ • Offshore supply vessels (IMO Resolution MSC.235(82))
¢ • Special Purpose Ships (IMO Resolution A.534(13))*
¢ • Special Trade Passenger Ships ”Pilgrim Trade” (1971)
¢ • High Speed Crafts (HSC Code 2000)
¢ • Tankers (MARPOL 73/78)
¢ • Ships covered by Reg. 27 of the LL Convention
¢ • Ships Carrying Dangerous Chemicals in Bulk (IBC Code)
¢ • Ships Carrying Liquefied Gases in Bulk (ICG Code)
¢ * SPS Code currently under revision and will be linked closely to the new SOLAS
¢ damage stability requirements
