Controlled and Freer Practice

- Controlled practice activities aim to build students' confidence with new language through carefully controlled exercises focused on form, accuracy, and a single language element. They are best used immediately after presentation. - Freer practice activities move beyond form and accuracy to focus more on meaning, communication, and realistic language use. They are best used after students have practiced controlled activities and seem ready to use the language more freely. Freer activities should provide contexts for personalization and exchange of information. - Both types of activities should be carefully designed to be meaningful, engage students, allow time for preparation and participation, and be at an appropriate level for students.
