1. The role of religion in England is a parallel story to that of the politics of the land. Identify the
ways in which the Church influences English politics during the Tudor Era— the reigns of Henry
VIII, Mary I and Edward VI-- and how (and why) the Church of England is formed. Be sure to
explain difference between Catholic and Protestant faiths when discussing the Church’s motives.
Structure your answer, drawing timelines if needed, and tie in the history of the Tudor Royals to the
changing religion of England, and how they were closely linked together. (3-5 paragraphs)

4. The Crusades was a period of great upheaval, leading to societal, cultural, economic and religious
changes all over Europe. However, in England, it was especially effective in ending the feudal
system. Explain the role of the Crusades in changing English society.
5. By the time Chaucer writes “The Canterbury Tales,” the society in England has already changed
dramatically from the Norman era into a more modern social structure which contains merchants and
guildsmen along with kings and nobles. Trace how and why this historical change happens from
1066 (Conquest) till 1400, the year of Chaucer’s death.
6. The Black Plague changed not just the lives of the English people but the very social structure.
What was the Plague, how did it spread to England and what impact did the plague have over the
social/political/religious lives of the medieval England?
7. The introduction of the Humanist movement through Martin Luther’s 97 Theses in 1517 started a
sea change in the religion and politics of the 16 th century. How did this movement start, and what
were the essential ideas of the Humanist movement that led to the Church’s downfall?
