Beyond The Basic

This document proposes a 4th grade science lesson on the solar system using the online tool Bubbl.us. The lesson addresses content standards about the earth's position and motion in the solar system. Students will work in groups to create diagrams in Bubbl.us outlining the eight planets. Each group will present their diagram to the class. The teacher reflects that this activity allows students who don't like lectures to bounce ideas off each other and learn about the solar system in a more engaging, in-depth manner compared to traditional lectures.

Lesson Idea Name: Our solar system

Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th

Content Standard Addressed: S4E2. Students will model the position and motion of the earth in the solar
system and will explain the role of relative position and motion in determining sequence of the phases of the
moon.

Technology Standard Addressed: 3. Knowledge Constructor

Selected Technology Tool: Bubbl.us

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level): (Select the one best level)
☐ Level 1: Awareness ☐ Level 2: Exploration ☒ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration
☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): This site would be helpful for students who have difficulty connecting
topics together. This would be an easy and fun way to outline a topic and would make a great presentation
tool. When teaching the class, using this site would help students understand why the lesson ties together.
Lesson idea implementation: In this lesson I would begin with a video of discussing the solar system. I would
then have students assist me in creating a rough template in Bubbl.us on the eight planets. After showing
them how the site worked, I would have four groups extend on what we did in whatever way they thought
that a lesson on the planets should best be taught. They would then present their own project to the rest of
the class.

These projects would require each group to have at least four subcategories in the project. I would grade them
on originality and their information.

Reflective Practice: This activity could be very effective for those students who do not like sitting through
lectures. With this activity, students bounce ideas from each other on what is actually important about the
solar system. I would have the students create a boarded project. This project would be about which planet
was their favorite and any facts they found on the planet. Each group would have a different planet. This
would give them a chance to learn in a more in-depth manner.
