Scale of Universe - EdTech Template

This document outlines a mini-lesson on classifying celestial bodies in the universe. The lesson objectives are for students to create a graphic organizer in Word to practice vocabulary terms and play educational games online to understand scale. Students will individually create a graphic organizer sorting terms into categories and play a sorting game. Their work will be assessed through a rubric for the organizer and teacher observation of their practice.

Space Systems Tech-based Mini-lesson

(1). Standards:

A. Content:
a. ESS1.A: The Universe and Its Stars - Earth and its solar system are part
of the Milky Way galaxy, which is one of many galaxies in the universe.
(MS-ESS1-2)

B. Tech:
a. Interdependence of Science, Engineering, and Technology - Integrate
multimedia and visual displays into presentations to clarify information,
strengthen claims and evidence, and add interest. (MS-ESS1-1),(MS-
ESS1-2)

(2). Lesson Objectives:

A. Content Area:
a. Students will be able to classify celestial bodies in the universe.

B. Technology:
a. Students will be able to practice vocabulary terms by making a graphic
organizer in Microsoft Word.
b. Students will be able to play educational games on interactive websites to
clarify the scale of the universe.

(4). Introduce the Learning Activity

A. Describe how you will communicate the lesson objective to the students. How will
you tell them what they will learn in this lesson?

The teacher will display the objectives on the board. She will also announce them
to the students at the start of the lesson.

B. Describe how you will provide a motivator. How will you get students interested
in this lesson?

The teacher will hook the students by having them reflect upon how small they
are here on earth in comparison to the universe. The teacher will use scaffolding
by building upon a previous lesson about the scale of the solar system, which left
students feeling humbled and small.

(5). Provide Information

A. Describe how you will provide any definitions, explanations, descriptions,

procedures, examples, and/or samples needed for this lesson.

The teacher will provide a vocabulary sheet for students to assist them in
performing their activities. The teacher will also provide directions for completing
the activities on the vocabulary sheet. Directions will also be listed on the board.

The teacher will model both activities and explain the directions prior to the
students starting the activities.

The teacher will use proximity to assist students that need further clarification.

(6). Provide Practice

A. Describe how you will give students an opportunity to practice the exact task
stated in the objective.

Student will be classifying celestial objects while making the graphic organizer
and while playing the sorting game. In the graphic organizer, students will sort
vocabulary terms into four categories.
1. Earth & Moon
2. Solar System (Sun & Heliosphere)
3. Milky Way Galaxy
4. Universe
The IBEX sorting game also requires students to sort celestial objects into the
four categories, but with photographs. The two activities allow students to
practice the objective using both visual photographs and textual words.

B. Describe how you will give students an opportunity to practice the exact
task stated in the objective individually, as well as in groups. (You may have only
individual practice, but not solely group practice.)

Students will be performing both tasks individually. Each student will have made
a graphic organizer of vocabulary terms for their notes by the end of class. Each
student will also have practiced using and visualizing the vocabulary terms in the
IBEX Universe Sorting Game.

(7). Provide Knowledge of Results

2

Space Systems Tech-based Mini-lesson

A.Describe how you will provide verbal feedback to the students on their practice
efforts.
The teacher will use proximity while students complete their graphic organizers
and sorting game. She will offer positive narrative feedback and point out areas
for improvement while they work.

B. Describe how you will provide written feedback to the students on their
practice efforts.

Students will hand in their graphic organizers for the teacher to grade. The
teacher will offer narrative feedback and point out areas for improvement on the
graphic organizer, as needed. The graphic organizers will be handed back the
next day so students can use them as a reference for upcoming summative
assessments.

(8). Review

A.Describe how you will, or how you will have students, summarize the important
points in this lesson.

The teacher will summarize the important concepts in this lesson by

demonstrating the four categories at the start of the lesson using the expanding
universe balloon, a Milky Way drawing and the Earth and Moon and Sun models.

The students will summarize the important points in the lesson by participating in
the closure activity. This activity requires each student to place a glow in the dark
celestial body on the board above the category it belongs to and explain why it
belongs there. For instance, if the student has an elliptical galaxy, they would
stick their galaxy above the balloon representing the universe and explain why it
belongs there. Whereas, if the student had Saturn, they would stick it above the
Sun model and explain that Saturn is within our Solar System.

(3). Methods of Assessment

A.Describe how you will assess whether or not the students have learned the
skills outlined in the learning objective. Provide a sample test, rubric, scoring guide, etc.

The students will receive a check grade and feedback for their graphic
organizers. The checklist for grading will look as follows:

Four categories are accurately represented.

Vocabulary terms are properly sorted.

Graphic organizer is clear and concise.

The IBEX sorting game and the closing activity also serve as informal formative
assessments. The teacher can use proximity to assess how students are doing
while playing the game. The teacher will also be able to see students accurately
or inaccurately place celestial bodies on the board during the closing activity.

B. How would you assess Tech Skills?

Students would be assessed based on competence.

The teacher will once again use proximity to determine whether students need
assistance in creating their graphic organizers or accessing the IBEX sorting
game. The teacher will be able to assess tech skills based on the layout of each
graphic organizer. It should be clear and concise.
