Math 147 Discussion Worksheet 9

1. The document discusses the exponential and logarithmic functions on the complex plane. It defines the exponential function as ez = ex cos y + iex sin y where z = x + iy. 2. It shows that the magnitude of the exponential function is |ez| = ex and that it is periodic in the imaginary part of its argument. 3. The principal value of the logarithm function is defined as Logz = ln r + iΘ for z = reiΘ, where r > 0 and −π < Θ ≤ π.

Math 147 Discussion Exercises #9

Exponential Function: If z = x + iy , we dene e = e e = ex cos y + iex sin y .

I. The

Figure 1. Here is the exponential function on the complex plane. The transition from dark to light colors shows
that the magnitude of the exponential function |ez | = ex is increasing to the right. The periodic horizontal bands
indicate that the exponential function is periodic in the imaginary part of its argument (see Exercise #1 below).

1) Verify each of the following.

(a) |ez | = ex b) arg (ez ) = y + 2πn, n ∈ Z
(c) dz e = e
d z z
d) ez = ez+2πi .
2) Write
2 the given expression in terms of x and y .
a) ez −z b) arg ez−i/z

c) arg ei(z+z) d) iez + 1

3) Express the given function f in the form f (z) = u (x, y) + iv (x, y).
a) f (z) = e−iz b) f (z) = e2z+i
c) f (z) = e ( z2 )
d) f (z) = e z
1

4) Determine where the function is dierentiable 2

a) f (z) = e 2z+i
b) f (z) = e z
5) Find the image of the given set under the exponential mapping f (z) = ez .
a) The line y = −2 b) The line x = 3
c) The innite strip 1 < x ≤ 2 d) The square with vertices at 0, 1, 1 + i, i.
e) The line y = 2x.
II. The Logarithmic Function: If z 6= 0, solve

(1) ew = z
for w. Write z = reiΘ , −π < Θ ≤ π and w = u + iv . So (1) is equivalent to eu eiv = reiΘ . Therefore, eu = r and v = Θ + 2πn,
n ∈ Z. Note eu = r ⇐⇒ u = ln r. Therefore, (1) ⇐⇒ w = ln r + i (Θ + 2πn), n ∈ Z. Therefore,
log z = ln r + i (Θ + 2πn) , n ∈ Z.
Equivalently, we can write
log z = ln |z| + i arg z
The principal value of log z is the value obtained when n = 0 and is denoted Logz . Thus,
(2) Logz = ln r + iΘ; r > 0, −π < Θ ≤ π
is the principal branch, corresponding to the branch cut consisting of the origin and the ray Θ = π .

6) Evaluate the logarithm

a) log (−5) b) Log −e2

c) log (−2 + 2i) d) Log (1 + i)4

7) Find all complex values of z satisfying the equation.
a) ez = 4i b) e2z + ez + 1 = 0.
8) Find the image of the given set under the mapping f (z) = Logz .
a) The ray arg (z) = π6 . b) The positive y -axis
c) The circle |z| =4 d) The annuls 3 ≤ |z| ≤ 5.
9) Prove that log zz21 = log z1 − log z2 for all nonzero complex numbers z1 and z2 .
10) a) Find two complex numbers z1 and z2 so that Log (z1 z2 ) 6= Log (z1 ) + Log (z2 )
b) What must be true about z1 and z2 if Log (z1 z2 ) = Log (z1 ) + Log (z2 )?
11) Find a domain in which the given function f is dierentiable; then nd f 0 .
a) f (z) = Logz(2z−i) b) f (z) = Log z 2 + 1 .
