Pope Francis' message discusses the themes of the upcoming World Youth Days in 2017, 2018 and 2019. The 2017 theme is based on Mary's words "The Mighty One has done great things for me" from the Magnificat. Pope Francis encourages young people not to be "couch potatoes" but to actively live their faith like Mary who traveled to help her cousin despite obstacles. Mary is an example of faith who believed God would fulfill his promises. Though young, her song echoes the history of her people - young people should not feel disconnected from the past traditions of the Church.

MESSAGE OF HIS HOLINESS POPE FRANCIS

FOR THE THIRTY-SECOND
WORLD YOUTH DAY 2017

“The Mighty One has done

great things for me” (Lk 1:49)
Dear Young Friends,
Here we are, on the road again,
following our great meeting in
Kraków, where we celebrated the
Thirty-first World Youth Day
and the Jubilee for Young
People as part of the
Holy Year of Mercy. We
took as our guides Saint John Paul II and Saint Faustina
Kowalska, the apostles of divine mercy, in order to offer a
concrete response to the challenges of our time. We had a
powerful experience of fraternity and joy, and we gave the
world a sign of hope. Our different flags and languages were
not a reason for rivalry and division, but an opportunity to
open the doors of our hearts and to build bridges.
At the conclusion of the Kraków World Youth Day, I
announced the next stop in our pilgrimage, which with God’s
help will bring us to Panama in 2019. On this journey we will
be accompanied by the Virgin Mary, whom all generations call
blessed (cf. Lk 1:48). This new leg of our journey picks up from
the one that preceded it, centred on the Beatitudes, and invites us
to press forward. I fervently hope that you young people will
continue to press forward, not only cherishing the memory of
the past, but also with courage in the present and hope for the
future. These attitudes were certainly present in the young Mary of
Nazareth and are clearly expressed in the themes chosen for the
three coming World Youth Days. This year (2017) we will reflect on
the faith of Mary, who says in the Magnificat: “The Mighty One has
done great things for me” (Lk 1:49). The theme for next year (2018)
– “Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favour with
God” (Lk 1:30) – will lead us to meditate on the courageous
charity with which the Virgin welcomed the message of
the angel. The 2019 World Youth Day will be inspired
by the words “I am the servant of the Lord. May it be
2
done to me according to your word” (Lk 1:38), Mary’s hope-
filled reply to the angel.
In October 2018, the Church will celebrate the Synod of
Bishops on the theme: Youth, Faith and Vocational
Discernment. We will talk about how you, as young people,
are experiencing the life of faith amid the challenges of our
time. We will also discuss the question of how you can develop
a life project by discerning your personal vocation, whether it
be to marriage in the secular and professional world, or to the
consecrated life and priesthood. It is my hope that the journey
towards the World Youth Day in Panama and the process of
preparation for the Synod will move forward in tandem.
Our age does not need young people who are
“couch-potatoes”
According to Luke’s Gospel, once Mary has received the message
of the angel and said “yes” to the call to become the Mother of
the Saviour, she sets out in haste to visit her cousin Elizabeth, who
was in the sixth month of her pregnancy (cf. 1:36, 39). Mary is very
young; what she was told is a great gift, but it also entails great
challenges. The Lord assured her of his presence and support, yet
many things remain obscure in her mind and heart. Yet Mary does
not shut herself up at home or let herself be paralyzed by fear or
pride. Mary is not the type that, to be comfortable, needs a good
sofa where she can feel safe and sound. She is no couch potato! (cf.
Address at the Vigil, Kraków, 30 July 2016). If her elderly cousin needs
a hand, she does not hesitate, but immediately sets off.
It was a long way to the house of Elizabeth, about 150 kilometres. But
the young woman from Nazareth, led by the Holy Spirit, knows no
obstacles. Surely, those days of journeying helped her to meditate on the
marvellous event of which she was a part. So it is with us, whenever we set
out on pilgrimage. Along the way, the events of our own lives come to
mind, we learn to appreciate their meaning and we discern our vocation,
which then becomes clear in the encounter with God and in service to
others.

The Mighty One has done great things for me

The meeting of the two women, one young and the other elderly, is filled
with the presence of the Holy Spirit and charged with joy and
wonder (cf. Lk 1:40-45). The two mothers, like the children
they bear, practically dance for joy. Elizabeth, impressed by
Mary’s faith, cries out: “Blessed is she who believed that
there would be a fulfilment of what was spoken to her by
the Lord” (v. 45). One of the great gifts that the Virgin
received was certainly that of faith. Belief in God is a priceless

3
gift, but one that has to be received. Elizabeth blesses Mary
for this, and she in turn responds with the song of the
Magnificat (cf. Lk 1:46-55), in which we find the words: “The
Mighty One has done great things for me” (v. 49).
Mary’s is a revolutionary prayer, the song of a faith-filled
young woman conscious of her limits, yet confident in God’s
mercy. She gives thanks to God for looking upon her
lowliness and for the work of salvation that he has brought
about for the people, the poor and the humble. Faith is at the
heart of Mary’s entire story. Her song helps us to understand
the mercy of the Lord as the driving force of history, the
history of each of us and of all humanity.
When God touches the heart of a young man or woman,
they become capable of doing tremendous things. The “great
things” that the Almighty accomplished in the life of Mary
speak also to our own journey in life, which is not a
meaningless meandering, but a pilgrimage that, for all its
uncertainties and sufferings, can find its fulfilment in God (cf.
Angelus, 15 August 2015). You may say to me: “But Father, I
have my limits, I am a sinner, what can I do?” When the Lord
calls us, he doesn’t stop at what we are or what we have done.
On the contrary, at the very moment that he calls us, he is
looking ahead to everything we can do, all the love we are
capable of giving. Like the young Mary, you can allow your life
to become a means for making the world a better place. Jesus is
calling you to leave your mark in life, your mark on history, both
your own and that of so many others (cf. Address at the Vigil,
Kraków, 30 July 2016).
Being young does not mean being disconnected from the
past
Mary was little more than an adolescent, like many of you. Yet in
the Magnificat, she echoes the praises of her people and their history.
This shows us that being young does not mean being disconnected
from the past. Our personal history is part of a long trail, a communal
journey that has preceded us over the ages. Like Mary, we belong to
a people. History teaches us that, even when the Church has to
sail on stormy seas, the hand of God guides her and helps her
to overcome moments of difficulty. The genuine
experience of the Church is not like a flash mob, where

4
people agree to meet, do their thing and then go their separate
ways. The Church is heir to a long tradition which, passed
down from generation to generation, is further enriched by
the experience of each individual. Your personal history has a
place within the greater history of the Church.
Being mindful of the past also helps us to be open to the
unexpected ways that God acts in us and through us. It also
helps us to be open to being chosen as a means by which God
brings about his saving plan. As young people, you too can do
great things and take on fuller responsibilities, if only you
recognize God’s mercy and power at work in your lives.
I would like to ask you some questions. How do you “save” in
your memory the events and experiences of your life? What do
you do with the facts and the images present in your memory?
Some of you, particularly those hurt by certain situations in life,
might want to “reset” your own past, to claim the right to forget
it all. But I would like to remind you that there is no saint without
a past, or a sinner without a future. The pearl is born of a wound
in the oyster! Jesus, by his love, can heal our hearts and turn our lives
into genuine pearls. As Saint Paul said, the Lord can show his power
through our weakness (cf. 2 Cor 12:9).
Yet our memories should not remain crammed together, as in the
memory of a hard drive. Nor can we archive everything in some
sort of virtual “cloud”. We need to learn how to make past events a
dynamic reality on which to reflect and to draw lessons and meaning
for the present and the future. This is no easy task, but one necessary for
discovering the thread of God’s love running through the whole of our
life.
Many people say that young people are distracted and superficial. They
are wrong! Still, we should acknowledge our need to reflect on our lives
and direct them towards the future. To have a past is not the same as to
have a history. In our life we can have plenty of memories, but how many
of them are really a part of our memory? How many are significant for
our hearts and help to give meaning to our lives? In the social media, we
see faces of young people appearing in any number of pictures recounting
more or less real events, but we don’t know how much of all this is really
“history”, an experience that can be communicated and endowed with
purpose and meaning. Television is full of “reality shows”
which are not real stories, but only moments passed before
a television camera by characters living from day to day,
without a greater plan. Don’t let yourselves be led astray by
this false image of reality! Be the protagonists of your history;
decide your own future.

5
How to remain connected, following
the example of Mary
It is said of Mary that she treasured all these things and
pondered them in her heart (cf. Lk 2:19, 51). This unassuming
young woman of Nazareth teaches us by her example to
preserve the memory of the events of our lives but also to
put them together and reconstruct the unity of all the fragments
that, put together, can make up a mosaic. How can we learn
to do this in practice? Let me offer you some suggestions.
At the end of each day, we can stop for a few minutes to
remember the good times and the challenges, the things that
went well and those that went wrong. In this way, before
God and before ourselves, we can express our gratitude,
our regrets and our trust. If you wish, you can also write
them down in a notebook as a kind of spiritual journal. This
means praying in life, with life and about life, and it will surely
help you to recognize the great things that the Lord is doing
for each of you. As Saint Augustine said, we can find God in
the vast fields of our memory (cf. Confessions, X, 8, 12).
Reading the Magnificat, we realize how well Mary knew the
word of God. Every verse of her song has a parallel in the
Old Testament. The young mother of Jesus knew the prayers
of her people by heart. Surely her parents and her grandparents
had taught them to her. How important it is for the faith to be
passed down from one generation to another! There is a hidden
treasure in the prayers that past generations have taught us, in the
lived spirituality of ordinary people that we call popular piety.
Mary inherits the faith of her people and shapes it in a song that
is entirely her own, yet at the same time the song of the entire
Church, which sings it with her. If you, as young people, want to
sing a Magnificat all your own, and make your lives a gift for
humanity as a whole, it is essential to connect with the historical
tradition and the prayer of those who have gone before you. To do
so, it is important to be familiar with the Bible, God’s word, reading
it daily and letting it speak to your lives, and interpreting everyday
events in the light of what the Lord says to you in the sacred
Scriptures. In prayer and in the prayerful reading of the Bible
(lectio divina), Jesus will warm your hearts and illumine
your steps, even in the dark moments of life (cf. Lk
24:13-35).
6
Mary also teaches us to live “eucharistically”, that is to learn
how to give thanks and praise, and not to fixate on our
problems and difficulties alone. In the process of living, today’s
prayers become tomorrow’s reasons for thanksgiving. In this
way, your participation in Holy Mass and the occasions when
you celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be both a
high point and new beginning. Your lives will be renewed each
day in forgiveness and they will become an act of perennial
praise to the Almighty. “Trust the memory of God … his
memory is a heart filled with tender compassion, one that rejoices
in erasing in us every trace of evil” (cf. Homily at Mass, World
Youth Day, Kraków, 31 July 2016).
We have seen that the Magnificat wells up in Mary’s heart at the
moment when she meets her elderly cousin Elizabeth. With her
faith, her keen gaze and her words, Elizabeth helps the Virgin to
understand more fully the greatness of what God is accomplishing
in her and the mission that he has entrusted to her. But what about
you? Do you realize how extraordinarily enriching the encounter
between the young and the elderly can be? How much attention do
you pay to the elderly, to your grandparents? With good reason you
want to “soar”, your heart is full of great dreams, but you need the
wisdom and the vision of the elderly. Spread your wings and fly, but
also realize that you need to rediscover your roots and to take up the
torch from those who have gone before. To build a meaningful future,
you need to know and appreciate the past (cf. Amoris Laetitia, 190,
193). Young people have strength, while the elderly have memory and
wisdom. As Mary did with Elizabeth, look to the elderly, to your
grandparents. They will speak to you of things that can thrill your minds
and fill your hearts.
Creative fidelity for building the future
It is true that you are still young and so it can be hard for you to appreciate
the importance of tradition. But know that this is not the same as being
traditionalists. No! When Mary in the Gospel says: “The Mighty One has
done great things for me”, she means to say that those “great things” are
not over, but are still happening in the present. It is not about the distant
past. Being mindful of the past does not mean being nostalgic or remaining
attached to a certain period of history, but rather being able to acknowledge
where we have come from, so that we can keep going back
to essentials and throwing ourselves with creative fidelity into
building the future. It would be problematic and ultimately
useless to cultivate a paralyzing memory that makes us keep
doing the same things in the same way. It is a gift of God to
see how many of you, with your questions, dreams and
uncertainties, refuse to listen to those who say that things cannot
change.
7
A society that values only the present tends to dismiss everything
inherited from the past, as for example the institutions of
marriage, consecrated life and priestly mission. These end up
being seen as meaningless and outdated forms. People think
it is better to live in “open” situations, going through life as if
it were a reality show, without aim or purpose. Don’t let
yourselves be deceived! God came to enlarge the horizons
of our life in every direction. He helps us to give due value to
the past so as better to build a future of happiness. Yet this is
possible only if we have authentic experiences of love, which
help us concretely to discern the Lord’s call and to respond
to it. For only that can bring us true happiness.
Dear young people I entrust our journey towards Panama,
together with the process of preparation for the next Synod
of Bishops, to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin
Mary. I ask you to keep in mind two important anniversaries
in 2017: the three-hundredth anniversary of the finding of
the image of Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil and the
centenary of the apparitions in Fatima, Portugal, where, God
willing, I plan to make a pilgrimage this coming May. Saint
Martin of Porres, one of the patron saints of Latin America
and of the 2019 World Youth Day, in going about his humble
daily duties, used to offer the best flowers to Mary, as a sign of
his filial love. May you too cultivate a relationship of familiarity
and friendship with Our Lady, entrusting to her your joys, your
worries and your concerns. I assure you that you will not regret
it!
May the maiden of Nazareth, who in the whole world has
assumed a thousand names and faces in order to be close to her
children, intercede for all of us and help us to sing of the great
works that the Lord is accomplishing in us and through us.

ARCHDIOCESE OF
LINGAYEN-DAGUPAN

Greetings and blessing to the

Archdiocesan Youth Ministry of Lingayen –
Dagupan on the occasion of its
ARCHDIOCESAN YOUTH DAY on
May 16-18, 2018 with the theme, “The Mighty
One has done great things for me, holy is His
Name!” (Lk.1:49)

True devotion to Mary must indeed lead us to Jesus. Mary’s

path leads to Jesus and the road of Jesus is our way to the kingdom.

How shall we imitate Mother Mary? Three words in Latin

describe her pilgrimage of faith.

The first is FIAT. It is her obedience, loving and faithful

obedience that opened new paths of hope for humankind. The root
of all discipleship is obedience. Love is obedience.

The second word is MAGNIFICAT. In proclaiming the

greatness of the Lord, Mary shows us that an obedient heart is ever
grateful and always happy. Imitate Mary in her joyful and humble
thanksgiving every day.

The last word is STABAT. Mary standing beneath the cross is

woman of courage. The test of love is sacrifice. The proof of faith is
martyrdom. Follow Jesus all the way to the cross and beyond the cross to
the empty tomb.

Look at Mary. With Mary, look at Jesus. Fix your

gaze on Jesus. Mabuhay!

Greetings of peace form the risen Lord!
The long wait is over. Archdiocesan Youth Day
2018 is finally here. It is with immense joy and
grateful heart that I welcome you all to Joyful
and Grateful AYD2018.
I share this joy of having you here with
the rest of the Archdiocesan Youth Council
and Ministry together with the young people from the St.
John the Baptist Parish, who tirelessly and invaluably poured
in all their efforts to help us make this AYD a joyful and
grateful one. I never doubted the capacity of our young
people. I was confident because of the strong faith and trust
that each of our “ALDY” has.
Through the intercession of our Blessed Mother, Our Lady
of Manaoag, I firmly believe that God will do great things
for you, our dear young people no matter how arduous the
road will be. His endless love never fails to embrace us.
In his letter for world youth day 2017, Pope Francis encourages
us to be mindful in the past. How our personal history became
part of a long trail, a communal journey that has preceded us
over the ages. Becoming mindful in the past will also help us to
be open to the unexpected ways that God acts in us and through
us. It will lead us to see our life’s purpose and to open up
ourselves as being chosen in living and sharing God’s saving
plan. As young people we can be instruments in doing the great
things for others.
As we are marching towards the Year of the Youth on 2019, let
us look forward that at the end of AYD 2018 journey, you may
also be able to proclaim your hearts’ magnificat as the Blessed
Mother did. Our mission doesn’t end in bringing and attending
AYD in Bautista. It actually begins there. The end-goal of our
mission is for every young person to share and live Jesus Christ
even after the AYD.
God has a mission for you. May your AYD story be God’s channel
to reveal Himself to you, and where thankful He is leading you to.
Begin with gratitude, by being thankful that you’re finally here – for
indeed, “The Mighty One has done great things for me, and
Holy is His name!”
Joyfully and gratefully yours,

Hello mga Ka-JAGY

The journey to the Archdiocesan Youth Day has been tough yet
rewarding. As the months and days drew near, we could hardly
contain the excitement we had in our hearts. Though mixed with
a bit fretfulness, our youthful fervor to bring you the best, and
only the best, overcomes all the worries.
AYD 2018 has been a story of JOY! For a time, many of us had
apprehensions as to whether we can actually host such a big
gathering. What kept us going is the joy that is coming from within!
For 22 years, we’ve waited the youth pilgrim cross to dwell in our
parish a year. We cannot forget how last day of AYD 2017 brought
joy to us. And now we are here, welcoming you with joy in our
hearts. We want to share with you the joy that Jesus shed in us all
throughout the year.

AYD 2018 has also been a story of GRATITUDE! We started

with nothing, but as we progressed in our preparations, the support
from the people came like rain that fell on dry land, thus, unexpected
harvests: the elders in our community worked with our young people,
institutions generously shared what they could, former youth ministers
offered help, and many other stories. Our gratefulness has become the
source of our joy, and it is what that sustained us as we tread the road
to AYD!

AYD 2018, more importantly, has also been a story of FAITH! Like any
other journey, the AYD 2018 also has its own ups and downs, joys and
sorrows. With many challenges that came our way, we could hold our head
up-high and proudly say, “we have gone this far, and we’re still holding
on!”, but what made us hold on? It is you, our fellow young people and
co-youth ministers. It is your “YES!” to come to Bautista that made us
believe we must strengthen our faith and persevere!
As you begin to write your chapter in our AYD 2018 journey, may you
also find your own story of JOY, GRATITUDE and FAITH. When Mary
gave her most humble “yes” to God, miracles began to happen i n
her life. It is our hope that your own “yes” to God will lead
you to see and experience His miracles in your life – so that
you may also sing your hearts’ thanksgiving and exultation,
“The Mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is His
Name!”

“THE MAGNIFICAT”
Archdiocesan Youth Day 2018 Theme
The theme for this year’s Archdiocesan Youth Day
was taken from the “The Magnificat” from Luke’s
Gospel (1:46-55). It is the Blessed Virgin Mary’s
hymn of praise to the Lord. It is also known as
the Canticle of Mary in the Liturgy of the Hours,
a special collection of scripture readings, psalms,
and hymns that constitute what is known as the
prayer of the church. (Priests and other religious
are required to pray sections from the Liturgy of
the Hours each day.) Although the Magnificat has
had numerous musical settings from such composers
a s Palestrina, Bach and Mozart, it can be recited as well as
sung. Its name comes from the first line of its text in Latin (“Magnificat
anima mea Dominum”) translated in the first line below. Mary proclaims
the Lord’s greatness with characteristic humility and grace here.
The Magnificat provides great material for meditation on the Visitation,
the second Joyful Mystery of the Rosary, pictured above. When the angel
Gabriel informs Mary that she is to be the Mother of God, he also tells her
of her relative Elizabeth’s pregnancy with John the Baptist.
After Mary gives her famous consent to becoming the Mother of God, —
“Behold the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to thy
word” (Luke 1:38) — she goes “with haste” (1:39) to help Elizabeth, who
is delighted to see her. Our Lady then expresses her joy in the Magnificat.
Clearly Mary, in hastening to help her cousin, is focused on service to others.
In this way she glorifies the Lord in reflecting (and “magnifying”) His
goodness and love. And, of course by becoming the Mother of God she will
help Him redeem us for our salvation in His Passion!
Speaking of magnifying, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen once referred to our
Blessed Mother as being like “a magnifying glass that intensifies our love of
her Son.”
Note that Mary’s joyful claim that “all generations shall call me blessed” in no way
takes away from her humility. If she seems to boast here, it is much as St. Paul
does later on in scripture when he says “whoever boasts, should boast in the
Lord” (2 Cor 10:17), that is to say, in God’s work being done through us.
In this regard, the Magnificat is more than a prayer of praise. It also reminds us
about the essential link between humility and holiness. Just as God has “regarded
the lowliness of his handmaid” and “has done great things” for Mary in making her
the Mother of his Son, so too “he has put down the mighty from their thrones
(with his own might!) and has exalted the lowly.” (Note also our Blessed Mother’s
humility in referring to herself in this prayer, as she does in giving her consent to
Gabriel mentioned earlier, as the Lord’s handmaid, his servant!)
As her Divine Son later stressed “Whoever exalts himself shall be humbled, and
whoever humbles himself shall be exalted” (Matt 23:12, also in slightly different
words in Luke 18:14 and Luke 14:11).
Jesus wasn’t saying anything new here, either! We read similar thoughts in throughout
the Old Testament such as in the Psalms and in this example from thebook of
Sirach “Humble yourself the more, the greater you are, and you will find
favor with God.” (Sirach 3:19)
The line about God filling “the hungry with good things” resonates
later in the Gospels as well, when our Lord says “Blessed are they
who hunger and thirst after righteousness for they will be filled”
(Matt 5:7). This serves as a good reminder for us to “stay hungry”
for God’s graces in praying and in reading His word in scripture.
And as for the rich being sent away empty? This line refers to
those who live for wealth and power and feel they have everything
figured out. These people in, effect wish to be Gods rather than
God’s.

WHAT IS AYD?

Archdiocesan Youth Day is the coming

together of young people from the different parishes of
the Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan for reception,
recollection and renewal, recreation, and re-
commissioning. Premised in the Word of God, this
encounter enables the young people to gather in
formation programs and path their future spiritual lives.
At the same time the gathering provides them the
opportunity to interact, create friendship, share their
own culture and heritage, discuss issues that concern
them and the rest of the society, and identify solutions
that could affect changes. AYD is a four-day experience
of being Church-praying, celebrating, caring, serving and
witnessing. It serves as a culminating activity of AYM’s
annual calendar. Therefore, a celebration of the fruit of
Youth Ministry.

How did AYD begin?

In 1995, scores of young hopefuls from the
Archdiocese of Lingayen-Dagupan trooped to Manila and
partook in the international gathering and journey of faith of
young pilgrims, the 10th World Youth Day. After experiencing
the joy and the meaning of the event, the Archdiocesan youths
present in that occasion saw the need to extend home the
ardor of the celebration, along with the desire to foster the
gathering’s message “As the Father has sent me, so am I sending
you.” (John 20:21).

This noble desire was encouraged by

Archbishop Oscar V. Cruz which then gave cause for
14
the founding of the annual celebration of meaningful
spiritual gathering for the youths of the Archdiocese, the
Archdiocesan Youth Day!

In 1996, the Archdiocesan Youth Apostolate

Committee (AYAC), composed of priests and youth leaders
who are in the 1995 WYD, organized the celebration of the
first AYD in the province’s capital town, Lingayen. It gathered
young people from the parishes of the Archdiocese, making
them experience the vitality of Christ’s Church to be awakened
and renewed to their commitment to evangelization and to
communicate in youthful unity a message of hope, faith and
love as envisioned during the World Youth Day’95 in Manila.

Twenty three years after its conception, the journey of

the Archdiocesan Youth Day continues as it finds new home
again in one of the parishes of Vicariate of Saint Vincent Ferrer–
the Saint John the Baptist Parish, Bautista Pangasinan, guided by
the message of the Holy Father to the Youth of the World on the
occasion of the 32nd World Youth Day, “The Mighty One has done
great things for me, holy is His Name!” Lk1:49

THE OBJECTIVES Archdiocesan YOUTH DAY
2018

Through this gathering of young disciples of Jesus, it is our

hope that the pilgrims will deepen the joyfulness and
gratefulness to all the great things the Mighty One has done
in their life—through faith-experience, fellowship with co-
pilgrims, and compel them to:

1. SEE: BE MORE AWARE of the social issues and

challenges as part of the universal church, to “think
universal”, “Young people are flawed but also good
and gifted and can make a difference!” as Pope Francis
would suggest.

2. JUDGE: REDISCOVER their giftedness of being “called,

chosen and sent” to read the signs of times, pray and
reflect, discern well according to gospel values, and make
decisive life-changing actions for our society and in the
Church.

3. ACT: Like our Blessed Mother, BE MORE PROACTIVE AND

DISCERNING by answering “YES” (Yielding, Entrusting and
Serving) to God’s challenge and to speak out significant and
well-discerned data on “issues and challenges of the world”
as requested by Pope Francis, in preparation for the coming
Synod of Bishops in 2018.

AYD2018 LOGO DESCRIPTION
The theme for the Archdiocesan Youth Day 2018 invites us to look at
Mary, our Mahal na Ina, as the exemplar of Christian discipleship.
The AYD 2018 logo is by and large of a mother and child image,
emblematic of the Marian devotion of the Pangasinans, particularly to
Our Lady of Manaoag. Mary and her Son, Jesus the Lord, figure
prominently in the logo. Her song of praise, the magnificat from which
the AYD 2018 theme is derived echoes even in the logo.

The Heart – the total image of the Logo is Heart.

In this AYD we will be empowered to the have
strong and brave hearts to answer the call of God
for us. As what we celebrated during the AYD 2015, only
those who have pure heart can heed and listen to God call.
Its small opening signifies our readiness and openness to
receive God’s purpose for our lives, our Vocation. Its color
blue signifies our humility as chosen God’s disciples, for only
those who are humble hearted can see God’s goodness and
proclaim “The Mighty One has done great things for me! Holy
is His Name”.

The Crown – the crown signifies the great reward

for those who are joyfully and gratefully following
God’s will. Like Mary, crowned by God’s glory at
the end of her stay in this world. The yellow color
of the crown symbolizes hope of coming glory. The five heads
are the young people who will be coming together to crown Mary
as a perfect example faith, friendship and fellowship.

The Jordan River – the half side of the Heart depicts the
Jordan River. The place where Jesus was baptized by John
the Baptist, the patron Saint of Bautista. John is also a model
of following God’s call, he followed God’s purpose
for him through preparing Jesus’ way and pointing him (Jesus)
out to those who do not know him. Jesus was able to
start his public ministry through John the Baptist. The

20
Jordan River serves as a pressing call for us young people to
renew our baptismal promises and to start our public ministry.
This AYD should push us to become pointers towards Jesus.

The Map of Bautista- the map of Bautista symbolizes the

excitement of the Host parish to show its culture
and welcome the youth from the five different
vicariates. Its green color depicts the youthfulness and
vibrancy of its youth. Also it brings us back to the
history for Bautista was a former place of wilderness. Wilderness
is a place where John the Baptist lived according to the Gospel.

The Eucharist – “The word became flesh and dwelt among

us” Through transubstantiation the process of Jesus
becoming real flesh is happening. The Eucharist is the
summit of our Christian faith. It is the greatest gift that
God gave into this world. In this AYD we will immerse
ourselves with this truth that Eucharist must be lived by every Catholic
faith. Its red color signifies God’s ultimate and unconditional love
for humanity. It is divided into four which emphasizes the four
communities who will welcome the AYD delegates named after the
four Gospels, St. Matthew, St. Mark, St. Luke, and St. John.

The Cross – In every AYD logo, there is no way to remove

this image. For almost 2 decades that the Youth Pilgrim Cross
empowers the faith of ALD Youth. The cross always reminds
us about our great mission of proclaiming the good news of
Salvation. Through the cross, we can whole-heartedly sing and rejoice that
the Lord has done great things for us!

Baby Jesus – this image emphasizes the great role of Mary, theotokos,
which means. God bearer. As we witness the goodness of the
Lord, God calls us to become vessels of the most high. Through
us, Jesus should be alive! Jesus should be seen by the world!

Virgin Mary – She is the central theme for this year’s AYD
celebration. She is the total image of the theme. As
she signifies the true essence of joyfulness and
gratefulness in following and embracing God’s
perfect plan and will. Mary is the perfect model on
how to respond to our vocation.

21
Inspired by Mary’s favourable
“FIAT” to Angel Gabriel’s CHORUS:
YES! Joyful Youth!
annunciation and her joyful Let us proclaim the greatness of
and grateful response to our Lord.

Maximizing the Archdiocesan Youth Day 2018
1. DISPOSE YOUR SPIRIT. The National Youth Day is a
youth formation gathering. It is neither an excursion nor
your opportunity to see places and meet new friends.
This is an inner spiritual journey to know our identity,
calling and challenges. Dispose your heart and spirit and
be formed.
2. ALWAYS WEAR THE NYD LENS. The success of the
gathering lies on our willingness to learn, reflect and
decide. Let’s learn to read the signs of times, decide and
act together.
3. LISTEN WITH YOUR HEART. Listen attentively to the
inputs, reflections and sharings of the day, challenge your
moral values and beliefs, and transform your heart.
4. BE OPEN. Humbly consider new ideas, experiences,
and opinions of others.
Humility is the beginning of learning and maturity.
Respect the opinions and views of others, and learn in
the process.
5. PRAY TOGETHER. Be more prayerful and participative
in the Eucharist, morning and evening prayers. Worshiping
God through the Holy Mass and community prayers is our
expression of faith, thanksgiving and devotion.
6. BE FRIENDLY. Make friends to everybody. Be attentive
and sensitive to the needs of others. Actively participate in
all activities and sharing.
7. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. Always listen to the organizer’s
daily announcements and instructions. Obey general rules
and regulations. Be conscious of the time. Be at the next
activity site, five minutes before the session.
8. BE THANKFUL. Be grateful to anything that may come along
the way. Let’s help the organizers in maintaining the order
and flow of the event. Refrain from criticizing the activities
and the organizers. Be proactive. Do something when issues
and concerns come. The NYD is our event; let’s help in making
the event a big success.
9. GO FOR CLAYGO. Be mindful of cleanliness of all NYD venues.
Apply CLAYGO: CLean As You GO. A clean venue is conductive
for reflection, sharing and learning.
10. LOVE YOUR HOST FAMILY. Be extra kind and grateful to
your host family. Be thankful for anything your family
would offer to you. Never compare your host family
to others.

ARCHDIOCESAN YOUTH DAY 2018
MORNING PRAYER (Joyful Day)
May 16, 2018

INTRODUCTION
Leader: As we commence the day and come before the
presence of the Lord, let us dispose ourselves and
acknowledge our sinfulness. Reflecting on our
imperfections, let us humbly declare before the Lord that
“we are flawed”.

Let us all stand.

INVOCATION
Opening Song: Come, Holy Spirit (Taizé)

CALL TO WORSHIP
(Silence. Instrumental music is played.)

Leader: In the Name of God the Father who created us and

called us to share in the work of creation. (Gong is banged.)

In the Name of Jesus Christ, the Son, who redeemed and

called us to share in His mission. (Gong is banged)

In the Name of the Holy Spirit, the Paraclete, who

strengthens and constantly guides us in our lives and in our
ministry. (Gong is banged.)

In the Name of the God who gathers and keeps us in His loving
embrace: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

All: Amen.

Leader: As we continue our journey this Archdiocesan Youth Day

2018, let us praise God and lift our voices to Him that everything
we hear, think, say and do be guided by His Divine
Inspiration. Let us open ourselves, all our endeavors and all
our activities with complete trust and confidence to
God’s abiding presence. (Silence.)

28
Leader: Today, we fix our eyes on Mary, our exemplar of
perfect discipleship. The woman who gave her most
courageous yes to the will of God the Father, who devoted
her whole life to Jesus Christ, her Son, who accompanied
the beginnings of our Church with the Holy Spirit. Let us
therefore entrust to her motherly intercession our being
called to pursue Christ’s mission despite our limitations.

The procession of the image of the Blessed Virgin Mary

follows.

OPENING PRAYER
All: God our Father, inspire us by the power which has created
us, and by the love which always sustains us.

Jesus Christ, the Son, inspire us by the love which died for us,
and by the risen presence which is with us now and always.

Holy Spirit, our Helper, You assure us today that You will teach
us what we ought to do and how we ought to do it, if we ask
Your help in faith and accept it in obedience. And to You God –
Father, Son and Holy Spirit, we give all the honor and glory, now
and forever. Amen.

(Moment of silence.)

GOSPEL READING
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke

As Jesus was walking along the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, fishing with nets
in the sea. And Jesus said to them, Come follow me, and I will make
you fishers of men. And they followed Jesus.

Jesus went a little further he saw two more brothers fishing, James
the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were both in the
fishing boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. And Jesus
called to them. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left
there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.
He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon,
and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat
down and taught the people from the boat. When he
had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into
deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon
answered,
29
“Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught
anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6When they had done so, they caught such a large
number of fish that their nets began to break. So they
signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help
them, and they came and filled both boats so full that
they began to sink. When Simon Simon saw this, he fell
at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a
sinful man!” For he and all his companions were
astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so
were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s
partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;
from now on you will fish for people.” So they pulled
their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
[Lk 5:1-11]

Priest: The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Leader: In silence, let us reflect on the Good News, let us

listen to Him speaking to our hearts. (Short silence)

COMMITMENT TO THE WORD OF GOD

Leader: We believe that the Creator of the world spoke the
word to the people of ancient Israel for the salvation of all
the nations. We believe that the Word of God was made
flesh and continues to live among us as the Good News for
all.

We believe that God sent the Holy Spirit among us to lead us to

truth and to guide our understanding of God’s word as we all
pray:

All: Loving God, help us to open our eyes, our ears, our minds,
and our hearts to your WORD. May we always welcome your
word of life, as you come to us with your wisdom, your
truth, and your love. As we gather for our Archdiocesan
Youth Day 2018, we ask You to make Your words be
ours, your thoughts be ours, your wisdom be ours
and
30
Your love be ours. We ask this with the intercession of Our
Lady of Manaoag our patroness through Jesus Christ our
Lord and Savior, Amen.

Leader: May I now invite everyone to find another person

whom they can approach and hug them, while mentioning
their name and say the words, “YOU ARE UNWORTHY
YET YOU ARE CALLED”.

CONCLUDING PRAYER

All: Lord God, we rejoice in Your greatness and power, Your

gentleness and love, Your mercy and justice. Despite our
unfaithfulness, You constantly journey with us, love us and
embrace us with Your immeasurable kindness. Inspired by the
perfect example of
Mother Mary of true discipleship, bestow upon us the grace we
ask for our body and soul. Sustain us with Your love in times of
adversaries. Enable us by Your Spirit to honor You in our thoughts,
our words and our actions, and to serve You in every aspect
of our lives. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord with the
prayers of our Blessed
Mother Mary, our model and inspiration. Amen.

ARCHDIOCESAN YOUTH DAY 2018
JOYFUL DAY
Focus Group Discussion 1: I AM FLAWED

#sugatan
Small Group Sharing:
-Who are you as a person? How do you see yourself?
-What are/were your fears (kinatatakutan), failures
(kabiguan) or frailties (kahinaan) in life?
-What has been your greatest dream for yourself?

EYES WIDE SHUT

The world measures our value as a person by the way we

look, the way we speak, what we have or what we can do
and not by whom we are. Because of this, many young
people are confused and unhappy—even those who are
already in PYM. It is important for us to realize and accept
who we really are if we want to live the life God wants for us.

The world says many different and confusing things about

us, as seen in media, reported in the news

When people think we are second class or less of a person

because of the color of our skin or the way we look or our
educational attainment. When people expect us to act or live by
a certain standard because of the reputation of our parents.
When people say that we are soft or gay, like a woman in a man’s
body

Many people get into drugs, party all night, every

night. Some become obsessed with being perfect
or pleasing others. People try so hard to hide their
imperfections, pretend and put up an image to be
accepted. Everyone seems to be trying to make
themselves worthy of love and attention.
35
ACTIVITY: You Are Beautiful

SONG: “Beautiful, beautiful, Jesus is Beautiful, Jesus

makes beautiful things of my life”

How about the difficult part?
• What did you feel when you were the one writing positive
things about others?
• How do you feel about the things they wrote down?
• Does this activity help you to know yourself more? To accept
your flaws and go on?
• How does understanding yourself help you to live out our
purpose? What God called us to do?

#iSayYES
ARCHDIOCESAN YOUTH DAY 2018
Vocation Campaign
Objectives:
• To understand that we each receive a personal
call from God called a vocation.
• To understand that within our vocational call there
are many different ways to serve the Church.
• To understand the difference between a vocation
and a career.
Vocation to the Religious Life: Certain men and women in
the Church are called to live as religious brothers or sisters.
They choose to follow God in holiness in a special way by living
in community with others, taking vows of poverty, celibate-
chastity and obedience. Ask the children if they know of any
religious sisters or brothers by name. If yes, ask them how that
person gives service to God and to God’s people. (Also let them
know that some are called to serve in hospitals, schools, working
with the poor, at nursing homes, in the parish, etc.) Think of
modern day religious who exemplify some of these examples
of service. A religious may hold a paid position in the secular
world, but the money earned belongs to the community, they
hold nothing of value in their own name. A religious spends time
every day in prayer either alone or with the religious community.
The Eucharist is the center of his or her prayer life. By devoting
more time in prayer, the sisters and brothers grow in their love for
God and to share God’s love with those whom they have been called
to serve.
Vocation to the Single Life: Not everyone is called to follow God as a
married person. Some live out their lives fully in the service of God and
the Church as a single person. They have the freedom to give a great
deal of their time to assisting others in the community, family and
parish.
Vocation to the Ordained Ministry: Still others have been called to
serve God and the Church by becoming priests and deacons. They are
what we call ordained ministers. They are men, called by God, entering
years of study and formation to prepare them for their special service
to God and the Church. Both priests and deacons are
ordained by a bishop who lays his hands upon and prays
for God’s special blessings to be upon them in the
Sacrament of Holy Orders. Priests and/or bishops bring
us the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation,
Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony and Confirmation. A
priest is given the responsibility of being the pastor of a
parish and providing spiritual and pastoral guidance to
members of the parish. A deacon may baptize and perform
37
the marriage ceremony. A priest is called to be another
“Christ” and is allowed to consecrate the bread and wine
to become the holy Body and Blood of Jesus in the
Eucharist. A deacon may or may not be married. He usually
has another job. He assists at the liturgy and may give a
homily. A deacon may also serve in the Church in other
ways, such as helping with the RCIA programs, marriage
preparation or being involved in some of the other
ministries.
Vocation to the Marriage: A man and a woman called by
God to the vocation of marriage serve the Church in a
special way. They profess a vow to one another to love,
honor and to be faithful to one another throughout their
lives. Married couples can be very involved in the Church.
They are the first educators of the faith with their children
at home and have the duty and responsibility to provide
for their children’s needs to grow physically,
intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually in holiness and
grow closer to God in love. A married couple witness to
their children what it means to follow God in holiness and
to sacrifice in love and service. Ask the student to list some
of the ways they see their parents serving God and others.
Help the children see that they already possess some of
the gifts and talents that can be used in the service of the
Church and others. Help them realize that they need to
continue to develop and use these gifts and talents for
God’s glory and for the good of the Church and one another.
(Optional exercise: have them write a paragraph and how
they can serve God and one another right now)
Closing Prayer:
Jesus, You call each one of us to listen to Your voice and answer
Your call to follow You in holiness. Help us to place our gifts
and talents at the service of God and the Church all of our lives.
Help us to be bold and brave to answer Your call to a particular
vocation, especially if You are calling us to be priests, deacons or
religious sisters and brothers. If you are calling us to the vocation
of marriage or to be single, help us to always be considerate of
others and to be generous and giving. Show us the ways to
serve Your Church in whatever way is pleasing and helpful.
May our words and actions always be a reflection of
Your love in our lives that we give to others. Amen.

FIRST READING:
A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah
Thus says the Lord:
Their descendants shall be renowned among the
nations,
and their offspring among the peoples;
All who see them shall acknowledge them
as a race the Lord has blessed.
I rejoice heartily in the Lord,
in my God is the joy of my soul;
For he has clothed me with a robe of salvation,
and wrapped me in a mantle of justice,
Like a bridegroom adorned with diadem,
like a bride bedecked with her jewels.
As the earth brings forth its plants,
and a garden makes its growth springs up,
So will the Lord God make justice and praise
Spring up before all the nations.
The Word of the Lord.

RESPONSORIAL PSALM: The Almighty has done great

things for me, And holy is His Name.
1. My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord,
My sprit rejoices in God my savior
2. For He has looked with favor on His lowly servant.
From this day all generations will call me blessed
The Almighty has done great things for me and holy is His
name
3. He has mercy on those who fear Him in every generation.
He has shown the strength of His arm,
He has scattered the proud in their conceit.
4. He has cast down the Mighty from their thrones,
And has lifted up the lowly.
40
He has filled the hungry with good things,
And the rich He has sent away empty.
5. He has come to the help of His servant Israel
For he has remembered His promise of mercy
The promise He made to our Fathers,
To Abraham and his children forever
SECOND READING: A reading from the Letter of Saint
Paul to the Galatians
Brothers and sisters:
When the fullness of time had come, God sent his son,
born of a woman, born under the law,
to ransom those under the law,
so that we might receive adoption as sons.
As proof that you are sons,
God sent the spirit of his Son into our hearts,
crying out “Abba, Father!”
So you are longer slaves but a son,
And if a son then also an heir, through God.
The Word of the Lord
GOSPEL ACCLAMATION
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Blessed are you, O Virgin Mary, who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be fulfilled.
GOSPEL READING: A reading from the holy
Gospel according to Luke
Mary set out
and travelled to the hill country in haste
to a town of Judah,
where she entered the house of Zechariah
and greeted Elizabeth, filled with the Holy Spirit,
cried out in a loud voice and said,
“Most blessed are you among women,
and blessed is the fruit of your womb.
And how does this happen to me,
that the mother of my Lord should come to me?
For the moment the sound of your greeting reached
my ears,
the infant in my womb leaped for joy.
Blessed are you who believed
that what was spoken to you by the Lord would be
fulfilled.”
And Mary said:
41
“My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord;
My spirit rejoices in God my savior.”

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL
Presider: Lord, You called us all like Mary in her haste to do
Your will; we offer our intentions through her intercession
seeking the divine grace to be audacious in following You.
In every petition we say:
R. LORD, THROUGH MOTHER MARY, HEAR OUR PRAYER.
1. In gratitude that Mary answered Your call and said yes,
loving Father, Giver of Your
Son through Mary, we pray for church leaders: our Pope
Francis, cardinals, bishops,
priests and deacons. May they have the perseverance to
proclaim You and lead the
faithful to deepen their faith, we pray to the Lord.
2. Thank You for providing Mary as a model of how we
should live our lives. Loving
Father, Giver of Your Son through Mary, we pray for
government officials, that they may imitate Mary as a
humble servant of the Lord. We pray to the Lord.
3. May those trapped in the downward spiral of sin have
hope through Mary, and may
You bring them new life. Loving Father, Giver of Your Son
through Mary, we pray for victims of crimes and injustice.
Renew their hope that reward and justice will comfrom You.
We pray to the Lord.
4. For all those who are sick and for those who have died.
Loving Father, Giver of Your
Son through Mary, may they seek comfort from the loving
maternal care of the
Blessed Mother and be totally healed from all infirmities of body
and soul. We pray
to the Lord.
5. For all young women, that they will find in the Blessed
Virgin Mary a model of holiness, and that the humility
and sincerity of Mary be a driving force for them
along the way of sanctity. We pray to the Lord.
42
6. That expectant parents will be free of anxiety, full of
health and well-being, and blessed with joy and
contentment in life. We pray to the Lord.
7. For all of us celebrating this Eucharistic feast, may we be
guided to become vessels of hope for all whose lives have
fallen into despair. We pray to the Lord.
Presider: Father, as we have offered all the desires of our
heart, may Mary be our guiding star as we all receive Your
redeeming grace to make us worthy to be Your followers
until Your Kingdom is accepted by all, together with Your
Son Jesus Christ and by the Holy Spirit, forever and ever.

One bread, one body, one Lord of all
One cup of blessing, which we bless
And we though many, throughout the earth
We are one body in this one Lord.

Woman or man, no more.
2. Many the gifts, many the works

Gathered to one, for all.
Blest Are They! (David Haas)
Blest are they, the poor in spirit, theirs is the Kingdom of God.
Blest are they, full of sorrow, they shall be consoled.
Chorus: Rejoice nab be glad!
Blessed are you, holy are you!
Rejoice nab be glad!
Yours is the Kingdom of God!
44
Blest are they, the lowly ones,
they shall inherit the earth.
Blest are they, who hunger and thirst,
they shall have their fill.
Blest are they who show mercy, mercy shall be theirs.
Blest are they, the pure of heart, they shall see God.
Blest are they who seek peace;
they are the children of God.
Blest are they who suffer in faith,
the glory God is theirs.
Blest are you who suffer hate, all because of Me.
Rejoice and be glad, yours is the Kingdom:
shine for all to see.
Awit Paghahangad (Bukas palad)
O Diyos Ikaw ang laging hanap,
Loob ko’y Ikaw ang tanging hangad.
Nauuhaw akong parang tigang na lupa
Sa tubig ng ‘Yong pag-aaruga.
Ika’y pagmamasdan sa dakong banal,
Nang makita ko ang ‘Yong pagkarangal.
Dadalangin akong nakataas aking kamay,
Magagalak na aawit ng papuring iaalay.
Gunita ko’y Ikaw
Habang nahihimlay
Pagkat ang tulong Mo sa tuwina’y taglay.
Sa lilim ng Iyong mga pakpak
Umaawit akong buong galak.
Aking kaluluwa’y kumakapit sa ‘Yo,
Kaligtasa’y t’yak kong hawak Mo ako.
Magdiriwang ang hari ang Diyos S’yang dahilan.
Ang sa Iyo ay nangakong galak yaong makakamtan.

ARCHDIOCESAN YOUTH DAY 2018
Taizé Prayer and Benediction
Joyful Day - May 16, 2018

“Hanap-hanap ka ng Puso”

EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The reconciliation rite may begin with a song about God’s
love and mercy (e.g. “Awit Paghilom”, “God of Silence”,
“Holy Darkness”, etc.) which the participants will sing
together.

After the song, reflective music is played in the plenary

hall to help maintain the prayerful atmosphere and
motivate the participants to prepare for contemplation.
Group facilitators continue accompanying their assigned
group, motivating them to help maintain the prayerful
mood, as well as assist their members, as necessary.

A few minutes before the start of the Eucharistic Adoration,

the emcees begin to call the attention of the participants
to gather at the venue and settle down in preparation for
this meaningful encounter with the Lord in the Blessed
Sacrament.

INTRODUCTION
Having received the Sacrament of Reconciliation in our
respective parishes, our hearts have been touched by the
loving hands of God. As Pope Francis said in his message for
the WYD2017, “When God touches the heart of a young man
or woman, they become capable of doing tremendous things.”
Like Mary, our Mother, our Lord is enabling us to do great things
in His name. Despite our sinfulness, He is calling us, for our Lord
knows that we can do good and we are capable of giving the love
that we have received from Him.

As we spend this moment with our Lord Jesus in

Eucharistic Adoration, let us allow

46
Him to affirm us, through the words of Pope Francis in his
message for the WYD2017:
“Like the young Mary, you can allow your life to become a
means for making the world a better place. Jesus is calling
you to leave your mark in life, your mark on history, both
your own and that of so many others.”

Let the grace of forgiveness we have received from Him

move us to praise and bless His name.

(After the introduction, a priest wearing cope and humeral

veil brings the Blessed Sacrament to the altar in a
monstrance. He may be accompanied by altar servers with
candles. Chants from Taizé may be used as songs for the
Eucharistic Adoration.)

In Your compassion, blot out my offense.
Wash me, O God, from the stain of my guilt
and cleanse me from my sin.

My offenses, truly I know them.

My sin is always before me.
Against You alone have I sinned.
What is evil in Your sight, I have done. (REFRAIN)

Create in me a pure heart.

Put a steadfast spirit within me.
Do not cast me away from Your presence
47
nor deprive me of Your spirit. (REFRAIN)

Defend me, O God, my Savior.

O Lord, open my lips,
and my mouth shall proclaim Your praise. (REFRAIN)

Presider: Let us pray.

O merciful God, in the heart of Your Son, that has been
wounded by our sins, You give us Your most loving
heart. May you accept our devotion to Him and look on
our repentance in our daily life. Through Christ our Lord

All: Amen.

GOSPEL READING

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew.

At that time the disciples came to Jesus and asked, “Who,

then, is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?” He called a
little child to him, and placed the child among them. And he
said: “Truly I tell you, unless you change and become like little
children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven.
Therefore, whoever takes the lowly position of this child is the
greatest in the kingdom of heaven. And whoever welcomes one
such child in my name welcomes me… See that you do not
despise one of these little ones. For I tell you that their
angels in heaven always see the face of my Father in
heaven.” [18:1-5, 10]

48
The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

MORNING OFFERING
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer
You all my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day in
53
union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the
world. I offer them for all the intentions of Your Sacred
Heart: the salvation of souls, the reparation for sin, and
the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions
of our bishops and of all apostles of prayer, and in particular
for those recommended by our Holy Father this month.

Our Father...
Hail Mary...
Glory...

GOSPEL READING

Alleluia (to be sung)

A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew

“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now
remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will
remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s
commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so
that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be
complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I
have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay
down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if
you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants,
because a servant does not know his master’s business.
Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned
from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not
choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you
might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that
whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is
my command: Love each other.

The Gospel of the Lord.

All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.

Leader: In silence, let us reflect on the word of God,

let us listen to Him speaking to our hearts. (short
silence)
54
SYMBOLIC ACTIVITY: WHAT TO GIVE
(Instrumental music is played)
1. Every pilgrim is encouraged to think of a gift he/she
wishes to give to a co-pilgrim today.
2. Choose one (1) from your groupmates, and tell him/her
the gift you want to give to him/her with these words: “I
am sharing with you this gift as sign of... (my appreciation,
our friendship, etc.). I hope that... (e.g. you will treasure
this as you continue your journey in serving the Church).”

CONCLUDING PRAYER
For Your goodness and generosity in giving us all we need,
help us to praise You, O God. In every circumstance of life, in
good times and bad, help us to trust You, O God. In love and
faithfulness, with all that we have and all that we are, help us
to serve You, O God. As we speak or write or listen to those
nearby or far away, help us to share Your love, O God. In every
thought and word and deed, by the power of Your Holy Spirit,
Help us to use all our gifts to glorify You, O God. All these we
pray through Christ our Lord, with the prayers of our Blessed
Mother Mary, our model and inspiration. Amen.

creature on this planet with a special area of expertise.
Some animals run, some hop, some swim, some burrow,
and some fly. Each has a particular role to play, based on
the way they were shaped by God. The same is true with
humans.

Each of us was uniquely designed, or “shaped,” to do

certain things. Before architects design any new building
they first ask, “What will be its purpose? How will it be used?”
The intended function always determines the form of the
building. Before God created you, he decided what role he
wanted you to play on earth. He planned exactly how he
wanted you to serve him, and then he shaped you for those
tasks. You are the way you are because you were made for a
specific ministry.
The Bible says, “We are God’s workmanship, created in Christ
Jesus to do good works.” 1 Our English word poem comes from
the Greek word translated “workmanship.” You are God’s
handcrafted work of art. You are not an assembly-line
product, mass produced without thought. You are a
custom-designed, one-of-a-kind, original
masterpiece.

56
God deliberately shaped and formed you to serve him in a
way that makes your ministry unique.

He carefully mixed the DNA cocktail that created you. David

praised God for this incredible personal attention to detail:
“You made all the delicate, inner parts of my body and knit
me together in my mother’s womb. Thank you for making
me so wonderfully complex! Your workmanship is
marvelous.” 2 As Ethel Waters said, “God doesn’t make junk.

Not only did God shape you before your birth, he planned
every day of your life to support his shaping process. David
continues, “Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” 3
This means that nothing that happens in your life is insignificant.
God uses all of it to mold you for your ministry to others and
shape you for your service to him.

God never wastes anything. He would not give you abilities,

interests, talents, gifts, personality, and life experiences unless
he intended to use them for his glory. By identifying and
understanding these factors you can discover God’s will for your
life. The Bible says you are “wonderfully complex.” You are a
combination of many different factors. To help you remember five
of these factors, I have created a simple acrostic: SHAPE.

STATION I : Lagi Nalang Ako

The world measures our value

as a person by the way we look,
the way we speak, what we
have or what we can do and not
by whom we are, by how many
“likes” and “followers” do we
have in Facebook, Twitter and
other social media. Because of
this, many young people are
confused and unhappy—even those who are already in
Church. It is important for us to realize and accept who
we really are if we want to live the life God wants for us.

Just like we learned in our Youth Camp, “Yes, I know the

plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare
and not for woe, plans to give you a future full of hope.”
(Jer. 29:11) The world says many different and confusing
things about us, as seen in media, reported in the news

When people think we are second class or less of a person

because of the color of our skin or the way we look or our
educational attainment. When people expect us to act or live by
a certain standard because of the reputation of our parents.
When people say that we are soft or gay, like a woman in a man’s
body

Many people get into drugs, party all night, every

night. Some become obsessed with being perfect
or pleasing others. People try so hard to hide their
imperfections, pretend and put up an image to be
accepted. Everyone seems to be trying to make
themselves worthy of love and attention.
63
64
STATION II:
CH RCH without U is nothing!

Currently, the Church faces a

challenge that is not easy to
conquer. First, an internal
challenge that is faced today:
how can we attract people to
go back to the Church again?
How can we fill the empty seats
that now are occupied only by a few old people? What
makes the Church grow, with the number of believers
always multiplying each year? In fact, the Pope once
said that the youth are future and treasures of the Church!
Also, many of our churches get filled with Mass goers
only for Easter and Christmas. What makes the Catholic
faithful miss attending the Eucharist in ordinary days?
Second, the external challenge, such as how the Church can
respond to critical questions that come from the rapid and
seemingly unstoppable technology advancement, social
inequities and issues, e.g. Who is God in this infinite universe
or in the cells that we can multiply? What will be our
response as young future in these realities?

STATION III: Tanging Yaman
In the beginning when God
created human beings, He
made them to be like
Himself. He created them
male and female, blessed
them and said, “Have many
children, so that your
descendants will live all over
the earth.”

This was the beginning of home, our family. A building

without a family is not a home, rather just a “House”.
The family was so important to God that when He sent
His only son to redeem us, Jesus Christ was born of
Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit and was raised
as the son of Joseph.
In essence, God takes care of us through our parents.
Our parents nurture us, love us, feed us, teach us, and
take care of our needs according to their capabilities.
Parents who know God introduce us to God’s teachings
and ways.
Our parents support us through our growing up years and
play a major role in forming our character. As we grow to
be more mature and responsible, we are able to take care
of ourselves. As we finish our education and become more
independent, we are prepared to start and support our own
family. And the cycle continues.

God commands us to respect our father and mother. This

is the ideal relationship of parents and children according
to the plan of God.

STATION IV: Walang Ikaw,
Walang Ako kasi Merong Tayo!

“No man is an island.” Humans

cannot live alone. This statement
has become our subject back in
primary school, in our social
science subject. It is not without
basis. Humans cannot live alone;
thus, the Lord gave Eve to Adam
and Adam to Eve to complement
each other. Nowadays, humankind
is more than just two people;
everyone in humankind has a role that will benefit each other.
Each of us, then, need to ask: Is my life really for the benefit
of other human beings?

The Gospel challenges us to become humble persons, striving

to help one another. Everything in this world is imperfect—
only God Almighty is—so our presence is meant to enhance
each other mutually, to fill in the gaps and shortcomings of one
another.
For us, there are days when we are able to enjoy the internet,
sleep tight in bed, eat hygienic food, have friends, or earn an
income, and so on. However, there are still many people who live
without certainty in life. They cannot even get hygienic and healthy
food and drinks. Moreover, they cannot go to school because they
don’t have money for the books and uniforms; worse, because the
school is seven mountains and three rivers away!
Therefore, should we, who seem “luckier” than them, remain silent?
Surely no! The story from Matthew, chapter 20, verses 20-28 reminds
us that we must serve people around us.

69
STATION V: Wanna Change?
In our modern society, so many
values turn around: what used
to be despised is now admired,
and what was once praised is
now ridiculed. There are so
many ideas and beliefs being
marketed. With these things,
people tend to follow the flow
and get drowned. We observe
how, frequently, so many
people tend to choose the
easiest way by simply following
trends circulating around the world. Is there something
here to be learned by a disciple of Christ? The light will
never be overcome by the darkness [cf. John 1:5]. It is
only with the light that we can see every shape, every
color, every dimension of this world. Our main role as
light is to make the world more beautiful to our vision,
not to make it worse.
Usually, we become rejecting and hostile towards the
world when we are not aware of what is happening. Thus,
the wise attitude is to be familiar with the world around
you. Then, share what you observe. Don’t be in a hurry to
judge what is not familiar, what you find unusual. We have
to be true to our mission and potential in life, and to be
open to the presence of other people. Without truthfulness
and openness, we shall foster distrust, fake-ness, and
falsehood—all assaults against the goodness of each person.
This world, with its challenges, can lead to apathy, conflict
and corruption, but with the light, we can lead it to
compassion, fellowship and goodness.
So, young people, let’s use our own light, let’s be light to share
goodness with others! Let’s share in order to love, out of love!
Find your own ways to share the good news! Ask yourself, “As
a Catholic youth who is a ‘light’, how bright am I?”
It’s time for Catholic youth to claim our freedom as Christ’s
disciples! Let’s use all of our youth energy!

STATION VI: Magtanim ay ‘di Biro
Love and service can be among
the embodiments of joy in young
people. Therefore, young people
who rejoice are also young people
who love. It is easy to say the
word “love”, but we need to know
that the joy of youth does not stop
merely at the word, but goes on to
the act of proving it, of living it, of
sharing it. And to prove, live and
share love, we need not be limited
to only our parents, brothers,
sisters, family, or boyfriend/ girlfriend, etc. but also to our
earth. By loving the earth, we keep ourselves and others alive
and show our devotion to God, for “the earth and everything
in it belongs to God” [1 Corinthians 10:26].
It is not only St. Francis who reminds us to love the earth like
our sister, but also Pope Francis, inviting us to be concerned
and take part in maintaining the earth. When we look around
our environment, we observe how pollution has gone from bad
to worse. Surely this environmental pollution does not happen
by itself; forms of pollution occurring everyday contribute to it,
such as air pollution from transportation, industrial fumes,
substances that contribute to the acidification of soil and water,
fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and agro toxins in
general. This results not only in damage to the environment and
the ecosystem, but also to health.
Pollution is also caused by waste, including hazardous wastes. “Each
year hundreds of millions of tons of waste are generated, much of it
non-biodegradable, highly toxic and radioactive, from homes and
businesses, from construction and demolition sites, from clinical,
electronic and industrial sources. The earth, our home, is beginning to
look more and more like an immense pile of filth” (Laudato Si, 21).
There are many causes of this destruction. One, often mentioned by
Pope Francis, is the “throwaway” culture, manifested in littering, in the
irresponsible use of disposables, in wasting water, electrical energy
and food, among others.
Every year, about one-third of the world’s food is lost or wasted,
according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States.
They also explain that the food which is wasted, worth almost US$ 1
trillion, can actually feed about 2 billion people (the number
of which is quite surprising)—which we can link with
another report that there are about 800 million
undernourished people in the world.

KYRIE: Katawan Mangasi Ka (M.A. Ramos)
Katawan, mangasi Ka
Katawan, mangasi Ka.
Cristo, mangasi Ka.
Cristo, mangasi Ka.
Katawan, mangasi Ka
Katawan, mangasi Ka.
FIRST READING: A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles
Wishing to determine the truth
about why Paul was being accused by the Jews,
the commander freed him
and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin to
convene.
Then he brought Paul down and made him stand before
them.
Paul was aware that some were Sadducees and some
Pharisees, so he called out before the Sanhedrin,
“My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees;
I am on trial for hope in the resurrection of the
dead.”

72
When he said this, a dispute broke out between the
Pharisees and Sadducees, and the group became
divided.
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection
or angels or spirits, while the Pharisees acknowledge all
three.
A great uproar occurred,
and some scribes belonging to the Pharisee party
stood up and sharply argued,
“We find nothing wrong with this man.
Suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”
The dispute was so serious that the commander,
afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them,
ordered his troops to go down and rescue Paul from their
midst and take him into the compound.
The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take
courage.
For just as you have borne witness to my cause in
Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness in Rome.”
The Word of the Lord.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM: R. Keep me safe,
O God; you are my hope.
Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;
I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.”
O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot.
I bless the LORD who counsels me;
even in the night my heart exhorts me.
I set the LORD ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,
my body, too, abides in confidence;
Because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world,
nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.
You will show me the path to life,
fullness of joys in your presence,
the delights at your right hand forever.
GOSPEL:
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John
Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying:
“I pray not only for these,
but also for those who will believe in me through their
word, so that they may all be one,
73
as you, Father, are in me and I in you,
that they also may be in us,
that the world may believe that you sent me.
And I have given them the glory you gave me,
so that they may be one, as we are one,
I in them and you in me,
that they may be brought to perfection as one,
that the world may know that you sent me,
and that you loved them even as you loved me.
Father, they are your gift to me.
I wish that where I am they also may be with me,
that they may see my glory that you gave me,
because you loved me before the foundation of the
world.
Righteous Father, the world also does not know you,
but I know you, and they know that you sent me.
I made known to them your name and I will make it
known,
that the love with which you loved me
may be in them and I in them.”

of His Son may be preached to all nations and gather all
before God as His holy people as we pray:
R. GOD, LET ALL THE NATIONS PRAISE YOU.
1. That all ministers of the people of God—priests, religious,
and consecrated men and women—may generously serve
the Lord and His people, and bear witness by their very lives
to the Good News they proclaim. Let us pray to the Lord.
2. That God’s pilgrim people may lovingly understand and accept
all peoples and cultures, speak all tongues, and thus bring
together the scattered children of God.
Let us pray to the Lord.
3. That missionaries may discover whatever good there is
in the hearts and minds of people and in their culture, to
heal, ennoble and perfect them in Christ. Let us pray
to the Lord.

74
4. That the missionary Church may bring the fullness of
Christ’s liberation to the whole person in his or her
concrete existence. Let us pray to the Lord.
5. That each of the young Churches may be deeply rooted
in its own people as a community of faith and love that
enriches the whole Church. Let us pray to the Lord.
6. That all young people may continue to contribute, each
according to one’s gifts and talents, toward the growth and
formation of strong local Christian communities in which
Christ is alive. Let us pray to the Lord.
7. That all of us who are gathered here may encounter Christ
as the meaning and inspiration of our lives; that we may be
willing to become to others His heart that loves, His hands
that heal, His feet that accompany people on the road to God
and to one another. Let us pray to the Lord.
Presider: Father of all nations, enlighten and strengthen Your
Church in our task of evangelization. Make us share in the
aspirations and hopes of our own people and of each one, suffer
with them, seek peace and find joy with them, and bring to all
the true peace and freedom of Jesus Christ our Lord.

Blest Are They! (David Haas)
Blest are they, the poor in spirit,
theirs is the Kingdom of God.
Blest are they, full of sorrow,
they shall be consoled.
Chorus: Rejoice nab be glad! Blessed are you,
holy are you!
Rejoice nab be glad! Yours is the Kingdom of God!
Blest are they, the lowly ones, they shall inherit the earth.
Blest are they, who hunger and thirst,
they shall have their fill.
Blest are they who show mercy, mercy shall be theirs.
Blest are they, the pure of heart, they shall see God.
Blest are they who seek peace; they are the children of God.
Blest are they who suffer in faith, the glory God is theirs.
Blest are you who suffer hate, all because of Me.
Rejoice and be glad, yours is the Kingdom: shine for all to see.
Awit Paghahangad (Bukas palad)

O Diyos Ikaw ang laging hanap,

Loob ko’y Ikaw ang tanging hangad.
Nauuhaw akong parang tigang na lupa
Sa tubig ng ‘Yong pag-aaruga.

Ika’y pagmamasdan sa dakong banal,

Nang makita ko ang ‘Yong pagkarangal.
Dadalangin akong nakataas aking kamay,
Magagalak na aawit ng papuring iaalay.

Gunita ko’y Ikaw

Habang nahihimlay
Pagkat ang tulong Mo sa tuwina’y taglay.
Sa lilim ng Iyong mga pakpak
Umaawit akong buong galak.

Aking kaluluwa’y kumakapit sa ‘Yo,

Kaligtasa’y t’yak kong hawak Mo ako.

COMMISSIONING RITES OF ARCHDIOCESAN

YOUTH MINISTERS

Commentator: The youth who have demonstrated the

ability, gift, commitment and responsibility to make their task
into a real ministry of Christ’s sake will now be commissioned
by the Archbishop.

Presider: Today, we act as a body of Christ to recognize and

support those who do service among us in specialized
ministry as these youth ministers are doing right now.
As Youth Ministers, you answer God’s call and take
upon you a special responsibility within the Christian
78
community. You will lead the young people and help others
to do the same. With you, young men and women will
come closer to Jesus Christ, and the Christian Community
will be built up so that God’s kingdom will come. In this
ministry, you must be example of Christian living in faith
and conduct; you must always strive to be an inspiration
for the young people and to your community.

Presider: Will you commit to serve the church especially

the people in the humble manner of Jesus, and be
responsible to the Body of Christ for the manner in which
you serve?

Youth Ministers: Yes, we do

Presider: Do you promise growth in your service with all

honesty and without any preconditions waiting?

Youth Ministers: Yes, we do

Presider: Will you strive to live by Jesus’ Gospel so as to be

worthy of trust put on you by your community?

Youth Ministers: Yes, we are

Presider: May God who has begun the good work in you bring it
to fulfillment.

Youth Ministers: Amen

Presider: Lord, look with favor these young servants of Yours and
send forth upon them the Holy Spirit, that they may be strengthened
by the gift of your sevenfold grace to carry out faithfully the work of
the ministry. May they excel in every virtue: in love that is sincere, in
concern for the lost and confused, in assuming authority, in self-
discipline and in holiness of life. May their conduct exemplify Your
commandments and lead Your young people to imitate His purity of
life. May remain strong and steadfast and Christ-giving to the world,
the witness of a pure conscious. May they imitate Your Son, who
came not to be served but to serve, and one day reign with Him in
heaven.

We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives, and
reigns with and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

Youth Ministers: Amen

INTRODUCTION
Leader: Young people of God, we shall begin by praising
God, rich in mercy, as He bestows on us every spiritual
blessing. Let us encounter Christ with profound spiritual
sustenance as a treasure that He wants to offer for all of us.
We deeply listen to the call of God to each one of us “to

CALL TO WORSHIP
Enflame Our Hearts (by Monica Brown)
Enflame our hearts, O God of love,
May we be Your light of love
Enflame our hearts, O God of love,
Let Your love burn deep in us.
Leader: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit.
All: Amen.

MORNING OFFERING
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You all my
prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day in union with the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the
intentions of Your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, the reparation
for sin, and the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions
of our Priests and of all apostles of prayer, and in particular for those
recommended by our Holy Father this month.

Our Father...
Hail Mary...
Glory...
GOSPEL READING
Alleluia (to be sung)
Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.

Sometime after this, Jesus crossed to the far shore of

the Sea of Galilee (that is, the

81
Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed
him because they saw the signs he had performed by
healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside
and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover
Festival was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a
great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,
“Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6
He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind
what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “It would
take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread
for each one to have a bite!”
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s
brother, spoke up,9 “Here is a boy with five small barley
loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among
so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.”
There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down
(about five thousand men were there).
11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed
to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He
did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his
disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing
be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve
baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over
by those who had eaten. 14 After the people saw the sign
Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the
Prophet who is to come into the world.” [6:1-14]
Priest: The Gospel of the Lord.
All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
Leader: In silence let us reflect on the word of God, let us
listen to Him speaking to our hearts.
(Short silence)
Leader: As people of faith throughout the world, we are called
to prayer. Our theological union with the Jewish people calls all
of us to a new relationship in faithful solidarity. Israel heard God’s
Word and responded in unwavering faith. We too respond in
faith to God’s Word in the New Covenant, which gives us salvation
as a result of Jesus’ Messianic fulfilment of the Old Covenant.
Members of the Jewish faith will join together at sunset to
remember the unleavened bread, hastily prepared in a
divinely guided journey from Egypt.
We Catholics share the symbolism of the unleavened
bread in our Eucharistic meal, through which Jesus
82
delivers us from sin and slavery. Passover—regardless of
the manner in which God speaks to us—and Easter are
inextricably joined in salvation history. Both events exhibit
God’s power and glory. That is what it is ultimately about,
praising God and taking the journey to eternal life with Him.
As we partake this unleavened bread, let us call to mind
that we are called to be taken, to be blessed, to be broken,
and to be shared. We are called to make a difference. May I
invite you then, that as you eat the bread, remember those
people who need our presence: our parents, and those people
we need to embrace—the homeless, the street children who
have nothing to eat, our friends and classmates who are
depressed, and those who need our gaze of love.
CONCLUDING PRAYER
Female: God of gifts, thank You for the blessings You have
given us. Thank You for the fellowship shared in the partaking
of the unleavened bread. May we also be willing to be broken
and shared by using our gifts and talents in a way that
demonstrates kindness, humility, and compassion. Keep our
hearts and minds open to the direction of the Spirit, who calls
us to celebrate our gifts by sharing them with others.
Male: God, give us always the strength to reach out to others in
need. May we always be willing to make sacrifices for the benefit
of our fellow human beings and do this in loving service to one
another as Jesus taught us.

All: Give us, O Lord, the perception we need to look within ourselves
and discover the beauty and gifts we possess. Give us the grace and
the courage to make a stand in all circumstances in life, selflessly serving
others in the community and building up Your kingdom here on earth.
We ask this through Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

Almighty God, Blessed with Your grace,

Amidst all ours fears and brokenness, Send us to the mission. Amen.

Prayer for the Turn Over of Youth Pilgrim Cross

(to be led by the Parish Youth Coordinator):
“Lord, we have been blessed by Your august presence in
our Parish for the past year. At the start of our journey
with you, We searched for you. During our encounter with
our fellow youth, we’ve come to know and worship you. Now,
many of us have already understood what it means to be a
Christian, to be your follower as You said: “If You want to be
my Disciples, take up your cross and follow Me.” Now, we
understand what it means to suffer, what it means to be
persecuted, what it means to die to ourselves and what it means
to rise up from our failures and shortcomings. Thru the
examples of Mary, who made all encounters with you
possible, we now know how to live and to love life to its
fullest.

84
Much as we want Your Dear Cross to stay longer with us
– it is time for others to experience what we have
experienced; to learn what we have learned, and to
understand what we have understood and to seek, know
and be transformed by the Jesus we found, encountered
and follow now. Anyway, we have already reserved the
best place in our heart for the love of You. Thank you dear
Lord.”
Dear fellow youth, we now entrust to you our dear Youth
Pilgrim Cross. Would that, you take good care of it and
make the best of the times during which this cross is
with you.

JOHN THE BAPTIST AND THE MAGNIFICAT

St. John the Baptist has a

birthday on June 24: one of the
oldest feasts in the liturgy and,
aside from the birthdays of Our
Lord and His Mother — and
Pentecost, if you will, the only
saint’s birthday to be
celebrated. All the others were
born with original sin on their
souls; so the day of their death,
or their particular heroism, or
the founding of their Order, is
celebrated. How St. John came
to be born without original sin on his soul is a story almost
everyone knows, but fewer realize that there is mention
of him seven centuries before in the prophecy of Isaiah.
Isaiah, the children must be reminded, is the prophet
whose words are so prominent in the Advent liturgy,
foretelling the coming of Christ. For example, he says
something that they recognize immediately: “Behold a
virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and his name shall be
called Emmanuel” (7:14). His words are also used in all four
Gospels to describe St. John the Baptist; in fact, St. John
says them about himself: “The voice of one crying in the
wilderness, make ready the way of the Lord” .

Learning all these things one at a time in our family, we finally

came to Isaiah, and in addition to discovering how and what
he prophesied, we looked for some autobiographical facts
about him. He came to a violent end, we discovered, sawed in
half by his son-in-law, Manasses. “Sawed in half,” said one.
“Heavens! which way?”

This is a minor detail alongside his prophecies, I agree, but

the children consider it one of the more interesting facts
they have picked up about saints and martyrs.

86
The story of St. John the Baptist begins: “In the days of
Herod, king of Judea.” So that sets the scene. The time
was before the birth of Jesus, but the king was the same.
Up in the hill country, in a town of Judea, there lived an old
man and his wife, Zachariah and Elizabeth, holy and good
but with neither chick nor child, and this was their great
sorrow. Zachariah was a priest, and twice a year for a week
at a time he went down to Jerusalem to serve in the temple.
At the time the story begins, Zachariah had been chosen by
lot to offer incense on the altar of incense during the
morning and evening sacrifices. One day when he went to
the holy place alone, he saw an angel standing by the altar
and was troubled and much afraid. But the angel told him not
to be afraid. He had come to tell Zachariah of a son God would
send him, in whom he would have “joy and gladness . . . for
he shall be great before the Lord . . . and shall be filled with
the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.” (It was here
foretold that the son would be born without original sin.)

But Zachariah was old and his wife was old and it was
uncommon for folks as old as they to start having babies; so he
asked: “How shall I know this? For I am an old man and my wife
is advanced in years.”

Then the angel said, “I am Gabriel, who stand in the presence of

God . . . and behold, thou shalt be dumb and unable to speak until
the day when these things come to pass, because thou hast not
believed my words which will be fulfilled in their proper time.” And
when Zachariah came out of the temple and faced the wondering
crowd outside, he made signs to them as best he could and they saw
that he was dumb. (This is a marvelous episode for a charade. The
first time we did it was one night in the middle of the kitchen when
even the oldest was very small. I had been telling the story as we
washed and wiped the dishes together. A charade suggested itself.
By now they have acted it out so often that they automatically respond
to any mention of Zachariah by putting a finger to their lips.)

So Zachariah went home and Elizabeth discovered soon that she

was to have a child. She retired from public view, the
Gospel says: to be quiet and prepared, and ponder her
precious secret.

Six months went by, and the same angel appeared to

Mary in a town of Galilee called Nazareth, and greeted
her with words that will never be forgotten: “Hail, full of
87
grace, the Lord is with thee. Blessed art thou among
women.” Then, as he said to Zachariah, he said to Mary:
“Do not be afraid.” He told her that she would bring forth
a son and call His name Jesus, and that “He shall be great
and be called the Son of the Most High.” Then, after he
had told her the child would be conceived of the Holy
Spirit, he told her Elizabeth’s secret and explained as he
did to Zachariah that although Elizabeth was very old, it
would come to pass — “for nothing shall be impossible
with God.”

Then Mary, in words so simple it is hard to grasp that

they were to change the history of the world — not
merely change it, but stop it still, and startle time and
space and fill eternity, said: “Be it done unto me according
to Thy word.”

THE VISITATION
And she “rose up and went with haste” to visit her cousin
in the hill country. She probably rode a donkey there in
the company of a caravan. I wish St. Luke had not been so
sparing with words, especially when he tells of her arrival.
All he says is that she entered the house of Zachariah and
saluted Elizabeth. If we only knew what she said. It was
probably some Hebrew custom, some form of asking a
blessing on the house and its occupants; but try as I might,
the only thing I can ever imagine is that she called out:
“Elizabeth dear, are you home?”

“And it came to pass, when Elizabeth heard the greeting of

Mary, that the babe in her womb leapt. And Elizabeth was
filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out with a loud voice, saying:
‘Blessed art thou among women and blessed is the fruit of thy
womb! And how have I deserved that the mother of my Lord
should come to me? For behold, the moment the sound of thy
greeting came to my ears, the babe in my womb leapt for
joy. . . .’”

Father Bruckberger tells in his Mary Magdalene of a

little church in southern France where there is a
88
painting of the Visitation, and in it the painter has fashioned
a little window in the garments of Elizabeth through which
we may see the tiny unborn John, “sitting as though in an
armchair, full of enthusiasm and playing a violin.” John’s
first greeting to Jesus. . . . Our smaller children will explain,
when it is their turn to do the Second Joyful Mystery, “St.
John jumped for joy inside his mother.” It was the moment
of his sanctification, being cleansed of original sin by the
Holy Spirit; and right after it came Mary’s Magnificat. No
wonder he leaped for joy. The world should have leaped for
joy.

“And Mary remained with her about three months and

returned to her own house.”

No one is sure, they say, if she stayed for the birth of St. John.
I am amazed. So is every mother I know. Let the scholars
haggle over it if they will; of course she stayed. Elizabeth was
old, she had never carried a child before. What else but Mary’s
concern would move her to rush to her side like that? Elizabeth
would be urged to rest while Mary cooked the meals, fed the
chickens (if there were chickens), tended to the little labors of
that quiet household. And in the evenings after prayer two such
women would sit and ponder the promise God had made to save
the world. And there is this to remember (then you know she
stayed): this child who was expected was to go before the path of
her own Son, and prepare His ways. With all her heart Mary would
have wanted to see and assist at his birth.

Elizabeth brought forth her son, St. Luke says, to the delight of her
family and neighbors, and announced on the day of his circumcision
that he would be called John. What? protested her friends and
relatives, John! No one in the family was named John. Far better to
name him for his father, Zachariah. Quite sure Zachariah would want
precisely that, they made signs to him to make his wishes known.
Zachariah asked for a writing tablet. On it he wrote the words: “John
is his name” — and immediately was able to speak. Such a fear came
on the neighbors that they whispered about all the hill country: “What
then will this child be?”

Well they might ask. Those who stayed to hear

Zachariah’s canticle should have guessed, for in it he
said: “And thou, child, shall be called the prophet of the
Most High, for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord
to prepare His ways, to give His people knowledge of
salvation through forgiveness of their sins. . . .”

Songs for Morning Prayers Ang kaibiga’y mag-aalay ng sarili
niyang buhay;
You Are Mine by David Haas Walang hihigit sa yaring pag-aalay.
I will come to you in the silence Kung paanong mahal Ako ng Aking
I will lift you from all your fear Ama,
You will hear My voice Sa inyo’y Aking ipinadarama.
I claim you as My choice Sa pag-ibig Ko, kayo sana ay
Be still, and know I am near manahan,
At bilin Ko sa inyo ay magmahalan.
I am hope for all who are
hopeless Pinili ka’t hinirang upang mahalin
I am eyes for all who long to see Nang mamunga’t bunga mo’y
In the shadows of the night, panatilihin.
I will be your light Humayo ka’t mamunga nang
Come and rest in Me masagana,
Kagalakang walang hanggang
Do not be afraid, I am with you ipamamana
I have called you each by name
Come and follow Me
I will bring you home Here I am Lord
I love you and you are mine
I, the Lord of sea and sky,
I am strength for all the I have heard My people cry.
despairing All who dwell in dark and sin,
Healing for the ones who dwell My hand will save.
in shame I who made the stars of night,
All the blind will see, the lame I will make their darkness bright.
will all run free Who will bear My light to them?
And all will know My name Whom shall I send?

Here I am Lord, Is it I Lord?

I am the Word that leads all to I have heard You calling in the night.
freedom I will go Lord, if You lead me.
I am the peace the world cannot I will hold Your people in my heart.
give
I will call your name, embracing I, the Lord of snow and rain,
all your pain I have born my peoples pain.
Stand up, now, walk, and live I have wept for love of them,
They turn away.
Pagkakaibigan by Hangad I will break their hearts of stone,
Give them hearts for love alone.
Ang sino mang sa Aki’y I will speak My word to them,
mananahan Whom shall I send?
Mananahan din Ako sa kanya.
At kung siya’y mamunga nang I, the Lord of wind and flame,
masagana, I will tend the poor and lame.
Siya sa Ama’y nagbigay ng I will set a feast for them,
karangalan. My hand will save
Finest bread I will provide,
Mula ngayon kayo’y Aking Till their hearts be satisfied.
kaibigan I will give My life to them,
Hinango sa dilim at kababaan. Whom shall I send?
