gift, but one that has to be received. Elizabeth blesses Mary
for this, and she in turn responds with the song of the
Magnificat (cf. Lk 1:46-55), in which we find the words: “The
Mighty One has done great things for me” (v. 49).
Mary’s is a revolutionary prayer, the song of a faith-filled
young woman conscious of her limits, yet confident in God’s
mercy. She gives thanks to God for looking upon her
lowliness and for the work of salvation that he has brought
about for the people, the poor and the humble. Faith is at the
heart of Mary’s entire story. Her song helps us to understand
the mercy of the Lord as the driving force of history, the
history of each of us and of all humanity.
When God touches the heart of a young man or woman,
they become capable of doing tremendous things. The “great
things” that the Almighty accomplished in the life of Mary
speak also to our own journey in life, which is not a
meaningless meandering, but a pilgrimage that, for all its
uncertainties and sufferings, can find its fulfilment in God (cf.
Angelus, 15 August 2015). You may say to me: “But Father, I
have my limits, I am a sinner, what can I do?” When the Lord
calls us, he doesn’t stop at what we are or what we have done.
On the contrary, at the very moment that he calls us, he is
looking ahead to everything we can do, all the love we are
capable of giving. Like the young Mary, you can allow your life
to become a means for making the world a better place. Jesus is
calling you to leave your mark in life, your mark on history, both
your own and that of so many others (cf. Address at the Vigil,
Kraków, 30 July 2016).
Being young does not mean being disconnected from the
past
Mary was little more than an adolescent, like many of you. Yet in
the Magnificat, she echoes the praises of her people and their history.
This shows us that being young does not mean being disconnected
from the past. Our personal history is part of a long trail, a communal
journey that has preceded us over the ages. Like Mary, we belong to
a people. History teaches us that, even when the Church has to
sail on stormy seas, the hand of God guides her and helps her
to overcome moments of difficulty. The genuine
experience of the Church is not like a flash mob, where
4
people agree to meet, do their thing and then go their separate
ways. The Church is heir to a long tradition which, passed
down from generation to generation, is further enriched by
the experience of each individual. Your personal history has a
place within the greater history of the Church.
Being mindful of the past also helps us to be open to the
unexpected ways that God acts in us and through us. It also
helps us to be open to being chosen as a means by which God
brings about his saving plan. As young people, you too can do
great things and take on fuller responsibilities, if only you
recognize God’s mercy and power at work in your lives.
I would like to ask you some questions. How do you “save” in
your memory the events and experiences of your life? What do
you do with the facts and the images present in your memory?
Some of you, particularly those hurt by certain situations in life,
might want to “reset” your own past, to claim the right to forget
it all. But I would like to remind you that there is no saint without
a past, or a sinner without a future. The pearl is born of a wound
in the oyster! Jesus, by his love, can heal our hearts and turn our lives
into genuine pearls. As Saint Paul said, the Lord can show his power
through our weakness (cf. 2 Cor 12:9).
Yet our memories should not remain crammed together, as in the
memory of a hard drive. Nor can we archive everything in some
sort of virtual “cloud”. We need to learn how to make past events a
dynamic reality on which to reflect and to draw lessons and meaning
for the present and the future. This is no easy task, but one necessary for
discovering the thread of God’s love running through the whole of our
life.
Many people say that young people are distracted and superficial. They
are wrong! Still, we should acknowledge our need to reflect on our lives
and direct them towards the future. To have a past is not the same as to
have a history. In our life we can have plenty of memories, but how many
of them are really a part of our memory? How many are significant for
our hearts and help to give meaning to our lives? In the social media, we
see faces of young people appearing in any number of pictures recounting
more or less real events, but we don’t know how much of all this is really
“history”, an experience that can be communicated and endowed with
purpose and meaning. Television is full of “reality shows”
which are not real stories, but only moments passed before
a television camera by characters living from day to day,
without a greater plan. Don’t let yourselves be led astray by
this false image of reality! Be the protagonists of your history;
decide your own future.
5
How to remain connected, following
the example of Mary
It is said of Mary that she treasured all these things and
pondered them in her heart (cf. Lk 2:19, 51). This unassuming
young woman of Nazareth teaches us by her example to
preserve the memory of the events of our lives but also to
put them together and reconstruct the unity of all the fragments
that, put together, can make up a mosaic. How can we learn
to do this in practice? Let me offer you some suggestions.
At the end of each day, we can stop for a few minutes to
remember the good times and the challenges, the things that
went well and those that went wrong. In this way, before
God and before ourselves, we can express our gratitude,
our regrets and our trust. If you wish, you can also write
them down in a notebook as a kind of spiritual journal. This
means praying in life, with life and about life, and it will surely
help you to recognize the great things that the Lord is doing
for each of you. As Saint Augustine said, we can find God in
the vast fields of our memory (cf. Confessions, X, 8, 12).
Reading the Magnificat, we realize how well Mary knew the
word of God. Every verse of her song has a parallel in the
Old Testament. The young mother of Jesus knew the prayers
of her people by heart. Surely her parents and her grandparents
had taught them to her. How important it is for the faith to be
passed down from one generation to another! There is a hidden
treasure in the prayers that past generations have taught us, in the
lived spirituality of ordinary people that we call popular piety.
Mary inherits the faith of her people and shapes it in a song that
is entirely her own, yet at the same time the song of the entire
Church, which sings it with her. If you, as young people, want to
sing a Magnificat all your own, and make your lives a gift for
humanity as a whole, it is essential to connect with the historical
tradition and the prayer of those who have gone before you. To do
so, it is important to be familiar with the Bible, God’s word, reading
it daily and letting it speak to your lives, and interpreting everyday
events in the light of what the Lord says to you in the sacred
Scriptures. In prayer and in the prayerful reading of the Bible
(lectio divina), Jesus will warm your hearts and illumine
your steps, even in the dark moments of life (cf. Lk
24:13-35).
6
Mary also teaches us to live “eucharistically”, that is to learn
how to give thanks and praise, and not to fixate on our
problems and difficulties alone. In the process of living, today’s
prayers become tomorrow’s reasons for thanksgiving. In this
way, your participation in Holy Mass and the occasions when
you celebrate the Sacrament of Reconciliation will be both a
high point and new beginning. Your lives will be renewed each
day in forgiveness and they will become an act of perennial
praise to the Almighty. “Trust the memory of God … his
memory is a heart filled with tender compassion, one that rejoices
in erasing in us every trace of evil” (cf. Homily at Mass, World
Youth Day, Kraków, 31 July 2016).
We have seen that the Magnificat wells up in Mary’s heart at the
moment when she meets her elderly cousin Elizabeth. With her
faith, her keen gaze and her words, Elizabeth helps the Virgin to
understand more fully the greatness of what God is accomplishing
in her and the mission that he has entrusted to her. But what about
you? Do you realize how extraordinarily enriching the encounter
between the young and the elderly can be? How much attention do
you pay to the elderly, to your grandparents? With good reason you
want to “soar”, your heart is full of great dreams, but you need the
wisdom and the vision of the elderly. Spread your wings and fly, but
also realize that you need to rediscover your roots and to take up the
torch from those who have gone before. To build a meaningful future,
you need to know and appreciate the past (cf. Amoris Laetitia, 190,
193). Young people have strength, while the elderly have memory and
wisdom. As Mary did with Elizabeth, look to the elderly, to your
grandparents. They will speak to you of things that can thrill your minds
and fill your hearts.
Creative fidelity for building the future
It is true that you are still young and so it can be hard for you to appreciate
the importance of tradition. But know that this is not the same as being
traditionalists. No! When Mary in the Gospel says: “The Mighty One has
done great things for me”, she means to say that those “great things” are
not over, but are still happening in the present. It is not about the distant
past. Being mindful of the past does not mean being nostalgic or remaining
attached to a certain period of history, but rather being able to acknowledge
where we have come from, so that we can keep going back
to essentials and throwing ourselves with creative fidelity into
building the future. It would be problematic and ultimately
useless to cultivate a paralyzing memory that makes us keep
doing the same things in the same way. It is a gift of God to
see how many of you, with your questions, dreams and
uncertainties, refuse to listen to those who say that things cannot
change.
7
A society that values only the present tends to dismiss everything
inherited from the past, as for example the institutions of
marriage, consecrated life and priestly mission. These end up
being seen as meaningless and outdated forms. People think
it is better to live in “open” situations, going through life as if
it were a reality show, without aim or purpose. Don’t let
yourselves be deceived! God came to enlarge the horizons
of our life in every direction. He helps us to give due value to
the past so as better to build a future of happiness. Yet this is
possible only if we have authentic experiences of love, which
help us concretely to discern the Lord’s call and to respond
to it. For only that can bring us true happiness.
Dear young people I entrust our journey towards Panama,
together with the process of preparation for the next Synod
of Bishops, to the maternal intercession of the Blessed Virgin
Mary. I ask you to keep in mind two important anniversaries
in 2017: the three-hundredth anniversary of the finding of
the image of Our Lady of Aparecida in Brazil and the
centenary of the apparitions in Fatima, Portugal, where, God
willing, I plan to make a pilgrimage this coming May. Saint
Martin of Porres, one of the patron saints of Latin America
and of the 2019 World Youth Day, in going about his humble
daily duties, used to offer the best flowers to Mary, as a sign of
his filial love. May you too cultivate a relationship of familiarity
and friendship with Our Lady, entrusting to her your joys, your
worries and your concerns. I assure you that you will not regret
it!
May the maiden of Nazareth, who in the whole world has
assumed a thousand names and faces in order to be close to her
children, intercede for all of us and help us to sing of the great
works that the Lord is accomplishing in us and through us.

ARCDIOCESAN YOUTH MINISTRY
Jovellanos St., Dagupan City
Greetings of peace form the risen Lord!
The long wait is over. Archdiocesan Youth Day
2018 is finally here. It is with immense joy and
grateful heart that I welcome you all to Joyful
and Grateful AYD2018.
I share this joy of having you here with
the rest of the Archdiocesan Youth Council
and Ministry together with the young people from the St.
John the Baptist Parish, who tirelessly and invaluably poured
in all their efforts to help us make this AYD a joyful and
grateful one. I never doubted the capacity of our young
people. I was confident because of the strong faith and trust
that each of our “ALDY” has.
Through the intercession of our Blessed Mother, Our Lady
of Manaoag, I firmly believe that God will do great things
for you, our dear young people no matter how arduous the
road will be. His endless love never fails to embrace us.
In his letter for world youth day 2017, Pope Francis encourages
us to be mindful in the past. How our personal history became
part of a long trail, a communal journey that has preceded us
over the ages. Becoming mindful in the past will also help us to
be open to the unexpected ways that God acts in us and through
us. It will lead us to see our life’s purpose and to open up
ourselves as being chosen in living and sharing God’s saving
plan. As young people we can be instruments in doing the great
things for others.
As we are marching towards the Year of the Youth on 2019, let
us look forward that at the end of AYD 2018 journey, you may
also be able to proclaim your hearts’ magnificat as the Blessed
Mother did. Our mission doesn’t end in bringing and attending
AYD in Bautista. It actually begins there. The end-goal of our
mission is for every young person to share and live Jesus Christ
even after the AYD.
God has a mission for you. May your AYD story be God’s channel
to reveal Himself to you, and where thankful He is leading you to.
Begin with gratitude, by being thankful that you’re finally here – for
indeed, “The Mighty One has done great things for me, and
Holy is His name!”
Joyfully and gratefully yours,

St. John the Baptist Parish
PARISH YOUTH MINISTRY
Bautista, Pangasinan
The journey to the Archdiocesan Youth Day has been tough yet
rewarding. As the months and days drew near, we could hardly
contain the excitement we had in our hearts. Though mixed with
a bit fretfulness, our youthful fervor to bring you the best, and
only the best, overcomes all the worries.
AYD 2018 has been a story of JOY! For a time, many of us had
apprehensions as to whether we can actually host such a big
gathering. What kept us going is the joy that is coming from within!
For 22 years, we’ve waited the youth pilgrim cross to dwell in our
parish a year. We cannot forget how last day of AYD 2017 brought
joy to us. And now we are here, welcoming you with joy in our
hearts. We want to share with you the joy that Jesus shed in us all
throughout the year.
AYD 2018, more importantly, has also been a story of FAITH! Like any
other journey, the AYD 2018 also has its own ups and downs, joys and
sorrows. With many challenges that came our way, we could hold our head
up-high and proudly say, “we have gone this far, and we’re still holding
on!”, but what made us hold on? It is you, our fellow young people and
co-youth ministers. It is your “YES!” to come to Bautista that made us
believe we must strengthen our faith and persevere!
As you begin to write your chapter in our AYD 2018 journey, may you
also find your own story of JOY, GRATITUDE and FAITH. When Mary
gave her most humble “yes” to God, miracles began to happen i n
her life. It is our hope that your own “yes” to God will lead
you to see and experience His miracles in your life – so that
you may also sing your hearts’ thanksgiving and exultation,
“The Mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is His
Name!”

THE OBJECTIVES Archdiocesan YOUTH DAY
2018
19
AYD2018 LOGO DESCRIPTION
The theme for the Archdiocesan Youth Day 2018 invites us to look at
Mary, our Mahal na Ina, as the exemplar of Christian discipleship.
The AYD 2018 logo is by and large of a mother and child image,
emblematic of the Marian devotion of the Pangasinans, particularly to
Our Lady of Manaoag. Mary and her Son, Jesus the Lord, figure
prominently in the logo. Her song of praise, the magnificat from which
the AYD 2018 theme is derived echoes even in the logo.
The Jordan River – the half side of the Heart depicts the
Jordan River. The place where Jesus was baptized by John
the Baptist, the patron Saint of Bautista. John is also a model
of following God’s call, he followed God’s purpose
for him through preparing Jesus’ way and pointing him (Jesus)
out to those who do not know him. Jesus was able to
start his public ministry through John the Baptist. The
20
Jordan River serves as a pressing call for us young people to
renew our baptismal promises and to start our public ministry.
This AYD should push us to become pointers towards Jesus.
Baby Jesus – this image emphasizes the great role of Mary, theotokos,
which means. God bearer. As we witness the goodness of the
Lord, God calls us to become vessels of the most high. Through
us, Jesus should be alive! Jesus should be seen by the world!
Virgin Mary – She is the central theme for this year’s AYD
celebration. She is the total image of the theme. As
she signifies the true essence of joyfulness and
gratefulness in following and embracing God’s
perfect plan and will. Mary is the perfect model on
how to respond to our vocation.

RULES AND REGULATIONS
25
Maximizing the Archdiocesan Youth Day 2018
1. DISPOSE YOUR SPIRIT. The National Youth Day is a
youth formation gathering. It is neither an excursion nor
your opportunity to see places and meet new friends.
This is an inner spiritual journey to know our identity,
calling and challenges. Dispose your heart and spirit and
be formed.
2. ALWAYS WEAR THE NYD LENS. The success of the
gathering lies on our willingness to learn, reflect and
decide. Let’s learn to read the signs of times, decide and
act together.
3. LISTEN WITH YOUR HEART. Listen attentively to the
inputs, reflections and sharings of the day, challenge your
moral values and beliefs, and transform your heart.
4. BE OPEN. Humbly consider new ideas, experiences,
and opinions of others.
Humility is the beginning of learning and maturity.
Respect the opinions and views of others, and learn in
the process.
5. PRAY TOGETHER. Be more prayerful and participative
in the Eucharist, morning and evening prayers. Worshiping
God through the Holy Mass and community prayers is our
expression of faith, thanksgiving and devotion.
6. BE FRIENDLY. Make friends to everybody. Be attentive
and sensitive to the needs of others. Actively participate in
all activities and sharing.
7. FOLLOW INSTRUCTIONS. Always listen to the organizer’s
daily announcements and instructions. Obey general rules
and regulations. Be conscious of the time. Be at the next
activity site, five minutes before the session.
8. BE THANKFUL. Be grateful to anything that may come along
the way. Let’s help the organizers in maintaining the order
and flow of the event. Refrain from criticizing the activities
and the organizers. Be proactive. Do something when issues
and concerns come. The NYD is our event; let’s help in making
the event a big success.
9. GO FOR CLAYGO. Be mindful of cleanliness of all NYD venues.
Apply CLAYGO: CLean As You GO. A clean venue is conductive
for reflection, sharing and learning.
10. LOVE YOUR HOST FAMILY. Be extra kind and grateful to
your host family. Be thankful for anything your family
would offer to you. Never compare your host family
to others.

May 16, 2018
INTRODUCTION
Leader: As we commence the day and come before the
presence of the Lord, let us dispose ourselves and
acknowledge our sinfulness. Reflecting on our
imperfections, let us humbly declare before the Lord that
“we are flawed”.

In the Name of the God who gathers and keeps us in His loving
embrace: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.
All: Amen.
28
Leader: Today, we fix our eyes on Mary, our exemplar of
perfect discipleship. The woman who gave her most
courageous yes to the will of God the Father, who devoted
her whole life to Jesus Christ, her Son, who accompanied
the beginnings of our Church with the Holy Spirit. Let us
therefore entrust to her motherly intercession our being
called to pursue Christ’s mission despite our limitations.
OPENING PRAYER
All: God our Father, inspire us by the power which has created

(Moment of silence.)
GOSPEL READING
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Luke
As Jesus was walking along the sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers,
Simon who is called Peter, and his brother Andrew, fishing with nets
in the sea. And Jesus said to them, Come follow me, and I will make
you fishers of men. And they followed Jesus.
Jesus went a little further he saw two more brothers fishing, James
the son of Zebedee and his brother John. They were both in the
fishing boat with their father Zebedee, mending their nets. And Jesus
called to them. He saw at the water’s edge two boats, left
there by the fishermen, who were washing their nets.
He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon,
and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat
down and taught the people from the boat. When he
had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into
deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.” Simon
answered,
29
“Master, we’ve worked hard all night and haven’t caught
anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6When they had done so, they caught such a large
number of fish that their nets began to break. So they
signaled their partners in the other boat to come and help
them, and they came and filled both boats so full that
they began to sink. When Simon Simon saw this, he fell
at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I am a
sinful man!” For he and all his companions were
astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, and so
were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s
partners. Then Jesus said to Simon, “Don’t be afraid;
from now on you will fish for people.” So they pulled
their boats up on shore, left everything and followed him.
[Lk 5:1-11]
All: Loving God, help us to open our eyes, our ears, our minds,
and our hearts to your WORD. May we always welcome your
word of life, as you come to us with your wisdom, your
truth, and your love. As we gather for our Archdiocesan
Youth Day 2018, we ask You to make Your words be
ours, your thoughts be ours, your wisdom be ours
and
30
Your love be ours. We ask this with the intercession of Our
Lady of Manaoag our patroness through Jesus Christ our
Lord and Savior, Amen.
CONCLUDING PRAYER
Leader: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit.
All: Amen.

ARCHDIOCESAN YOUTH DAY 2018
Vocation Campaign
Objectives:
• To understand that we each receive a personal
call from God called a vocation.
• To understand that within our vocational call there
are many different ways to serve the Church.
• To understand the difference between a vocation
and a career.
Vocation to the Religious Life: Certain men and women in
the Church are called to live as religious brothers or sisters.
They choose to follow God in holiness in a special way by living
in community with others, taking vows of poverty, celibate-
chastity and obedience. Ask the children if they know of any
religious sisters or brothers by name. If yes, ask them how that
person gives service to God and to God’s people. (Also let them
know that some are called to serve in hospitals, schools, working
with the poor, at nursing homes, in the parish, etc.) Think of
modern day religious who exemplify some of these examples
of service. A religious may hold a paid position in the secular
world, but the money earned belongs to the community, they
hold nothing of value in their own name. A religious spends time
every day in prayer either alone or with the religious community.
The Eucharist is the center of his or her prayer life. By devoting
more time in prayer, the sisters and brothers grow in their love for
God and to share God’s love with those whom they have been called
to serve.
Vocation to the Single Life: Not everyone is called to follow God as a
married person. Some live out their lives fully in the service of God and
the Church as a single person. They have the freedom to give a great
deal of their time to assisting others in the community, family and
parish.
Vocation to the Ordained Ministry: Still others have been called to
serve God and the Church by becoming priests and deacons. They are
what we call ordained ministers. They are men, called by God, entering
years of study and formation to prepare them for their special service
to God and the Church. Both priests and deacons are
ordained by a bishop who lays his hands upon and prays
for God’s special blessings to be upon them in the
Sacrament of Holy Orders. Priests and/or bishops bring
us the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist, Reconciliation,
Anointing of the Sick, Matrimony and Confirmation. A
priest is given the responsibility of being the pastor of a
parish and providing spiritual and pastoral guidance to
members of the parish. A deacon may baptize and perform
37
the marriage ceremony. A priest is called to be another
“Christ” and is allowed to consecrate the bread and wine
to become the holy Body and Blood of Jesus in the
Eucharist. A deacon may or may not be married. He usually
has another job. He assists at the liturgy and may give a
homily. A deacon may also serve in the Church in other
ways, such as helping with the RCIA programs, marriage
preparation or being involved in some of the other
ministries.
Vocation to the Marriage: A man and a woman called by
God to the vocation of marriage serve the Church in a
special way. They profess a vow to one another to love,
honor and to be faithful to one another throughout their
lives. Married couples can be very involved in the Church.
They are the first educators of the faith with their children
at home and have the duty and responsibility to provide
for their children’s needs to grow physically,
intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually in holiness and
grow closer to God in love. A married couple witness to
their children what it means to follow God in holiness and
to sacrifice in love and service. Ask the student to list some
of the ways they see their parents serving God and others.
Help the children see that they already possess some of
the gifts and talents that can be used in the service of the
Church and others. Help them realize that they need to
continue to develop and use these gifts and talents for
God’s glory and for the good of the Church and one another.
(Optional exercise: have them write a paragraph and how
they can serve God and one another right now)
Closing Prayer:
Jesus, You call each one of us to listen to Your voice and answer
Your call to follow You in holiness. Help us to place our gifts
and talents at the service of God and the Church all of our lives.
Help us to be bold and brave to answer Your call to a particular
vocation, especially if You are calling us to be priests, deacons or
religious sisters and brothers. If you are calling us to the vocation
of marriage or to be single, help us to always be considerate of
others and to be generous and giving. Show us the ways to
serve Your Church in whatever way is pleasing and helpful.
May our words and actions always be a reflection of
Your love in our lives that we give to others. Amen.

FIRST READING:
A reading from the Book of the Prophet Isaiah
Thus says the Lord:
Their descendants shall be renowned among the
nations,
and their offspring among the peoples;
All who see them shall acknowledge them
as a race the Lord has blessed.
I rejoice heartily in the Lord,
in my God is the joy of my soul;
For he has clothed me with a robe of salvation,
and wrapped me in a mantle of justice,
Like a bridegroom adorned with diadem,
like a bride bedecked with her jewels.
As the earth brings forth its plants,
and a garden makes its growth springs up,
So will the Lord God make justice and praise
Spring up before all the nations.
The Word of the Lord.
“Hanap-hanap ka ng Puso”
EUCHARISTIC ADORATION
The reconciliation rite may begin with a song about God’s
love and mercy (e.g. “Awit Paghilom”, “God of Silence”,
“Holy Darkness”, etc.) which the participants will sing
together.
INTRODUCTION
Having received the Sacrament of Reconciliation in our
respective parishes, our hearts have been touched by the
loving hands of God. As Pope Francis said in his message for
the WYD2017, “When God touches the heart of a young man
or woman, they become capable of doing tremendous things.”
Like Mary, our Mother, our Lord is enabling us to do great things
in His name. Despite our sinfulness, He is calling us, for our Lord
knows that we can do good and we are capable of giving the love
that we have received from Him.
46
Him to affirm us, through the words of Pope Francis in his
message for the WYD2017:
“Like the young Mary, you can allow your life to become a
means for making the world a better place. Jesus is calling
you to leave your mark in life, your mark on history, both
your own and that of so many others.”

MORNING PRAYER (Day 2 - Grateful Day)
May 17, 2018
INTRODUCTION
Leader: We begin our 2nd day though this incomparable
summit of faith, with an atmosphere of solidarity among
young people of God. Let us prepare ourselves to accept
worthily the grace of God as we joyfully acclaim “we are good
and gifted”.
GROUNDING
(Instrumental Music)
CALL TO WORSHIP
MORNING OFFERING
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer
You all my prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day in
53
union with the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the
world. I offer them for all the intentions of Your Sacred
Heart: the salvation of souls, the reparation for sin, and
the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions
of our bishops and of all apostles of prayer, and in particular
for those recommended by our Holy Father this month.
Our Father...
Hail Mary...
Glory...
GOSPEL READING
“As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now
remain in my love. 10 If you keep my commands, you will
remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s
commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so
that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be
complete. 12 My command is this: Love each other as I
have loved you. 13 Greater love has no one than this: to lay
down one’s life for one’s friends. 14 You are my friends if
you do what I command. 15 I no longer call you servants,
because a servant does not know his master’s business.
Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned
from my Father I have made known to you. 16 You did not
choose me, but I chose you and appointed you so that you
might go and bear fruit—fruit that will last—and so that
whatever you ask in my name the Father will give you. 17 This is
my command: Love each other.
CONCLUDING PRAYER
For Your goodness and generosity in giving us all we need,
help us to praise You, O God. In every circumstance of life, in
good times and bad, help us to trust You, O God. In love and
faithfulness, with all that we have and all that we are, help us
to serve You, O God. As we speak or write or listen to those
nearby or far away, help us to share Your love, O God. In every
thought and word and deed, by the power of Your Holy Spirit,
Help us to use all our gifts to glorify You, O God. All these we
pray through Christ our Lord, with the prayers of our Blessed
Mother Mary, our model and inspiration. Amen.
Leader: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit.
All: Amen.
Closing Song: “Pagkakaibigan” (Bukas Palad)

ARCHDIOCESAN YOUTH DAY 2018
GRATEFUL DAY
Focus Group Discussion 2:
I AM WONDEFULLY MADE
#Galing
God made each person special, thus each one is unique.
One way that differentiates us from each other is our
talents. When used according to their purpose, it could
truly be a way of bringing out God’s plan in our lives. On
the other hand, it can break us if we don’t seek to
understand their purpose.
56
God deliberately shaped and formed you to serve him in a
way that makes your ministry unique.
Not only did God shape you before your birth, he planned
every day of your life to support his shaping process. David
continues, “Every day of my life was recorded in your book.
Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.” 3
This means that nothing that happens in your life is insignificant.
God uses all of it to mold you for your ministry to others and
shape you for your service to him.

STATION IV: Walang Ikaw,

STATION V: Wanna Change?
In our modern society, so many
values turn around: what used
to be despised is now admired,
and what was once praised is
now ridiculed. There are so
many ideas and beliefs being
marketed. With these things,
people tend to follow the flow
and get drowned. We observe
how, frequently, so many
people tend to choose the
easiest way by simply following
trends circulating around the world. Is there something
here to be learned by a disciple of Christ? The light will
never be overcome by the darkness [cf. John 1:5]. It is
only with the light that we can see every shape, every
color, every dimension of this world. Our main role as
light is to make the world more beautiful to our vision,
not to make it worse.
Usually, we become rejecting and hostile towards the
world when we are not aware of what is happening. Thus,
the wise attitude is to be familiar with the world around
you. Then, share what you observe. Don’t be in a hurry to
judge what is not familiar, what you find unusual. We have
to be true to our mission and potential in life, and to be
open to the presence of other people. Without truthfulness
and openness, we shall foster distrust, fake-ness, and
falsehood—all assaults against the goodness of each person.
This world, with its challenges, can lead to apathy, conflict
and corruption, but with the light, we can lead it to
compassion, fellowship and goodness.
So, young people, let’s use our own light, let’s be light to share
goodness with others! Let’s share in order to love, out of love!
Find your own ways to share the good news! Ask yourself, “As
a Catholic youth who is a ‘light’, how bright am I?”
It’s time for Catholic youth to claim our freedom as Christ’s
disciples! Let’s use all of our youth energy!

STATION VI: Magtanim ay ‘di Biro
Love and service can be among
the embodiments of joy in young
people. Therefore, young people
who rejoice are also young people
who love. It is easy to say the
word “love”, but we need to know
that the joy of youth does not stop
merely at the word, but goes on to
the act of proving it, of living it, of
sharing it. And to prove, live and
share love, we need not be limited
to only our parents, brothers,
sisters, family, or boyfriend/ girlfriend, etc. but also to our
earth. By loving the earth, we keep ourselves and others alive
and show our devotion to God, for “the earth and everything
in it belongs to God” [1 Corinthians 10:26].
It is not only St. Francis who reminds us to love the earth like
our sister, but also Pope Francis, inviting us to be concerned
and take part in maintaining the earth. When we look around
our environment, we observe how pollution has gone from bad
to worse. Surely this environmental pollution does not happen
by itself; forms of pollution occurring everyday contribute to it,
such as air pollution from transportation, industrial fumes,
substances that contribute to the acidification of soil and water,
fertilizers, insecticides, fungicides, herbicides and agro toxins in
general. This results not only in damage to the environment and
the ecosystem, but also to health.
Pollution is also caused by waste, including hazardous wastes. “Each
year hundreds of millions of tons of waste are generated, much of it
non-biodegradable, highly toxic and radioactive, from homes and
businesses, from construction and demolition sites, from clinical,
electronic and industrial sources. The earth, our home, is beginning to
look more and more like an immense pile of filth” (Laudato Si, 21).
There are many causes of this destruction. One, often mentioned by
Pope Francis, is the “throwaway” culture, manifested in littering, in the
irresponsible use of disposables, in wasting water, electrical energy
and food, among others.
Every year, about one-third of the world’s food is lost or wasted,
according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United States.
They also explain that the food which is wasted, worth almost US$ 1
trillion, can actually feed about 2 billion people (the number
of which is quite surprising)—which we can link with
another report that there are about 800 million
undernourished people in the world.

FIRST READING: A Reading from the Acts of the Apostles
Wishing to determine the truth
about why Paul was being accused by the Jews,
the commander freed him
and ordered the chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin to
convene.
Then he brought Paul down and made him stand before
them.
Paul was aware that some were Sadducees and some
Pharisees, so he called out before the Sanhedrin,
“My brothers, I am a Pharisee, the son of Pharisees;
I am on trial for hope in the resurrection of the
dead.”
72
When he said this, a dispute broke out between the
Pharisees and Sadducees, and the group became
divided.
For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection
or angels or spirits, while the Pharisees acknowledge all
three.
A great uproar occurred,
and some scribes belonging to the Pharisee party
stood up and sharply argued,
“We find nothing wrong with this man.
Suppose a spirit or an angel has spoken to him?”
The dispute was so serious that the commander,
afraid that Paul would be torn to pieces by them,
ordered his troops to go down and rescue Paul from their
midst and take him into the compound.
The following night the Lord stood by him and said, “Take
courage.
For just as you have borne witness to my cause in
Jerusalem, so you must also bear witness in Rome.”
The Word of the Lord.
RESPONSORIAL PSALM: R. Keep me safe,
O God; you are my hope.
Keep me, O God, for in you I take refuge;
I say to the LORD, “My Lord are you.”
O LORD, my allotted portion and my cup,
you it is who hold fast my lot.
I bless the LORD who counsels me;
even in the night my heart exhorts me.
I set the LORD ever before me;
with him at my right hand I shall not be disturbed.
Therefore my heart is glad and my soul rejoices,
my body, too, abides in confidence;
Because you will not abandon my soul to the nether world,
nor will you suffer your faithful one to undergo corruption.
You will show me the path to life,
fullness of joys in your presence,
the delights at your right hand forever.
GOSPEL:
A reading from the holy Gospel according to John
Lifting up his eyes to heaven, Jesus prayed saying:
“I pray not only for these,
but also for those who will believe in me through their
word, so that they may all be one,
73
as you, Father, are in me and I in you,
that they also may be in us,
that the world may believe that you sent me.
And I have given them the glory you gave me,
so that they may be one, as we are one,
I in them and you in me,
that they may be brought to perfection as one,
that the world may know that you sent me,
and that you loved them even as you loved me.
Father, they are your gift to me.
I wish that where I am they also may be with me,
that they may see my glory that you gave me,
because you loved me before the foundation of the
world.
Righteous Father, the world also does not know you,
but I know you, and they know that you sent me.
I made known to them your name and I will make it
known,
that the love with which you loved me
may be in them and I in them.”

PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL
Presider: Let us pray to God our Father that the Good News
of His Son may be preached to all nations and gather all
before God as His holy people as we pray:
R. GOD, LET ALL THE NATIONS PRAISE YOU.
1. That all ministers of the people of God—priests, religious,
and consecrated men and women—may generously serve
the Lord and His people, and bear witness by their very lives
to the Good News they proclaim. Let us pray to the Lord.
2. That God’s pilgrim people may lovingly understand and accept
all peoples and cultures, speak all tongues, and thus bring
together the scattered children of God.
Let us pray to the Lord.
3. That missionaries may discover whatever good there is
in the hearts and minds of people and in their culture, to
heal, ennoble and perfect them in Christ. Let us pray
to the Lord.
74
4. That the missionary Church may bring the fullness of
Christ’s liberation to the whole person in his or her
concrete existence. Let us pray to the Lord.
5. That each of the young Churches may be deeply rooted
in its own people as a community of faith and love that
enriches the whole Church. Let us pray to the Lord.
6. That all young people may continue to contribute, each
according to one’s gifts and talents, toward the growth and
formation of strong local Christian communities in which
Christ is alive. Let us pray to the Lord.
7. That all of us who are gathered here may encounter Christ
as the meaning and inspiration of our lives; that we may be
willing to become to others His heart that loves, His hands
that heal, His feet that accompany people on the road to God
and to one another. Let us pray to the Lord.
Presider: Father of all nations, enlighten and strengthen Your
Church in our task of evangelization. Make us share in the
aspirations and hopes of our own people and of each one, suffer
with them, seek peace and find joy with them, and bring to all
the true peace and freedom of Jesus Christ our Lord.

One Bread, One Body
One bread, one body, one Lord of all
One cup of blessing, which we bless
And we though many, throughout the earth
We are one body in this one Lord.
1. Gentile or Jew, servant or free
Woman or man, no more.

2. Many the gifts, many the works
One in the Lord of all
3. Grain for the fields, scattered and grown
Gathered to one, for all.
Blest Are They! (David Haas)
Blest are they, the poor in spirit,
theirs is the Kingdom of God.
Blest are they, full of sorrow,
they shall be consoled.
Chorus: Rejoice nab be glad! Blessed are you,
holy are you!
Rejoice nab be glad! Yours is the Kingdom of God!
Blest are they, the lowly ones, they shall inherit the earth.
Blest are they, who hunger and thirst,
they shall have their fill.
Blest are they who show mercy, mercy shall be theirs.
Blest are they, the pure of heart, they shall see God.
Blest are they who seek peace; they are the children of God.
Blest are they who suffer in faith, the glory God is theirs.
Blest are you who suffer hate, all because of Me.
Rejoice and be glad, yours is the Kingdom: shine for all to see.

1.
He called us to the waters of life
He pours His love into our hearts
Jesus comes to us in our hearts
Glory to God forever.
2.
Be our way, our truth and our life
Form us anew in how You died
We embrace the cross that You bore
And will arise in glory.
3.
Holy Fire, come dwell in each heart
Grant us the gifts Your love imparts
Free our tongues to boldly proclaim
“Jesus is Lord forever”
Presider: May God who has begun the good work in you bring it
to fulfillment.
Presider: Lord, look with favor these young servants of Yours and
send forth upon them the Holy Spirit, that they may be strengthened
by the gift of your sevenfold grace to carry out faithfully the work of
the ministry. May they excel in every virtue: in love that is sincere, in
concern for the lost and confused, in assuming authority, in self-
discipline and in holiness of life. May their conduct exemplify Your
commandments and lead Your young people to imitate His purity of
life. May remain strong and steadfast and Christ-giving to the world,
the witness of a pure conscious. May they imitate Your Son, who
came not to be served but to serve, and one day reign with Him in
heaven.
We ask this through our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Son, who lives, and
reigns with and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever.

May 18, 2018
INTRODUCTION
Leader: Young people of God, we shall begin by praising
God, rich in mercy, as He bestows on us every spiritual
blessing. Let us encounter Christ with profound spiritual
sustenance as a treasure that He wants to offer for all of us.
We deeply listen to the call of God to each one of us “to
make a difference”.

CALL TO WORSHIP
Enflame Our Hearts (by Monica Brown)
Enflame our hearts, O God of love,
May we be Your light of love
Enflame our hearts, O God of love,
Let Your love burn deep in us.
Leader: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit.
All: Amen.
MORNING OFFERING
O Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of Mary, I offer You all my
prayers, works, joys and sufferings of this day in union with the Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass throughout the world. I offer them for all the
intentions of Your Sacred Heart: the salvation of souls, the reparation
for sin, and the reunion of all Christians. I offer them for the intentions
of our Priests and of all apostles of prayer, and in particular for those
recommended by our Holy Father this month.
Our Father...
Hail Mary...
Glory...
GOSPEL READING
Alleluia (to be sung)
Priest: A reading from the Holy Gospel according to John.
81
Sea of Tiberias), 2 and a great crowd of people followed
him because they saw the signs he had performed by
healing the sick. 3 Then Jesus went up on a mountainside
and sat down with his disciples. 4 The Jewish Passover
Festival was near. 5 When Jesus looked up and saw a
great crowd coming toward him, he said to Philip,
“Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?” 6
He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind
what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, “It would
take more than half a year’s wages to buy enough bread
for each one to have a bite!”
8 Another of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter’s
brother, spoke up,9 “Here is a boy with five small barley
loaves and two small fish, but how far will they go among
so many?” 10 Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.”
There was plenty of grass in that place, and they sat down
(about five thousand men were there).
11 Jesus then took the loaves, gave thanks, and distributed
to those who were seated as much as they wanted. He
did the same with the fish.
12 When they had all had enough to eat, he said to his
disciples, “Gather the pieces that are left over. Let nothing
be wasted.” 13 So they gathered them and filled twelve
baskets with the pieces of the five barley loaves left over
by those who had eaten. 14 After the people saw the sign
Jesus performed, they began to say, “Surely this is the
Prophet who is to come into the world.” [6:1-14]
Priest: The Gospel of the Lord.
All: Praise to You, Lord Jesus Christ.
Leader: In silence let us reflect on the word of God, let us
listen to Him speaking to our hearts.
(Short silence)
Leader: As people of faith throughout the world, we are called
to prayer. Our theological union with the Jewish people calls all
of us to a new relationship in faithful solidarity. Israel heard God’s
Word and responded in unwavering faith. We too respond in
faith to God’s Word in the New Covenant, which gives us salvation
as a result of Jesus’ Messianic fulfilment of the Old Covenant.
Members of the Jewish faith will join together at sunset to
remember the unleavened bread, hastily prepared in a
divinely guided journey from Egypt.
We Catholics share the symbolism of the unleavened
bread in our Eucharistic meal, through which Jesus
82
delivers us from sin and slavery. Passover—regardless of
the manner in which God speaks to us—and Easter are
inextricably joined in salvation history. Both events exhibit
God’s power and glory. That is what it is ultimately about,
praising God and taking the journey to eternal life with Him.
As we partake this unleavened bread, let us call to mind
that we are called to be taken, to be blessed, to be broken,
and to be shared. We are called to make a difference. May I
invite you then, that as you eat the bread, remember those
people who need our presence: our parents, and those people
we need to embrace—the homeless, the street children who
have nothing to eat, our friends and classmates who are
depressed, and those who need our gaze of love.
CONCLUDING PRAYER
Female: God of gifts, thank You for the blessings You have
given us. Thank You for the fellowship shared in the partaking
of the unleavened bread. May we also be willing to be broken
and shared by using our gifts and talents in a way that
demonstrates kindness, humility, and compassion. Keep our
hearts and minds open to the direction of the Spirit, who calls
us to celebrate our gifts by sharing them with others.
Male: God, give us always the strength to reach out to others in
need. May we always be willing to make sacrifices for the benefit
of our fellow human beings and do this in loving service to one
another as Jesus taught us.
All: Give us, O Lord, the perception we need to look within ourselves
and discover the beauty and gifts we possess. Give us the grace and
the courage to make a stand in all circumstances in life, selflessly serving
others in the community and building up Your kingdom here on earth.
We ask this through Jesus, our Lord. Amen.

JOHN THE BAPTIST AND THE MAGNIFICAT
86
The story of St. John the Baptist begins: “In the days of
Herod, king of Judea.” So that sets the scene. The time
was before the birth of Jesus, but the king was the same.
Up in the hill country, in a town of Judea, there lived an old
man and his wife, Zachariah and Elizabeth, holy and good
but with neither chick nor child, and this was their great
sorrow. Zachariah was a priest, and twice a year for a week
at a time he went down to Jerusalem to serve in the temple.
At the time the story begins, Zachariah had been chosen by
lot to offer incense on the altar of incense during the
morning and evening sacrifices. One day when he went to
the holy place alone, he saw an angel standing by the altar
and was troubled and much afraid. But the angel told him not
to be afraid. He had come to tell Zachariah of a son God would
send him, in whom he would have “joy and gladness . . . for
he shall be great before the Lord . . . and shall be filled with
the Holy Spirit even from his mother’s womb.” (It was here
foretold that the son would be born without original sin.)
But Zachariah was old and his wife was old and it was
uncommon for folks as old as they to start having babies; so he
asked: “How shall I know this? For I am an old man and my wife
is advanced in years.”
THE VISITATION
And she “rose up and went with haste” to visit her cousin
in the hill country. She probably rode a donkey there in
the company of a caravan. I wish St. Luke had not been so
sparing with words, especially when he tells of her arrival.
All he says is that she entered the house of Zachariah and
saluted Elizabeth. If we only knew what she said. It was
probably some Hebrew custom, some form of asking a
blessing on the house and its occupants; but try as I might,
the only thing I can ever imagine is that she called out:
“Elizabeth dear, are you home?”
No one is sure, they say, if she stayed for the birth of St. John.
I am amazed. So is every mother I know. Let the scholars
haggle over it if they will; of course she stayed. Elizabeth was
old, she had never carried a child before. What else but Mary’s
concern would move her to rush to her side like that? Elizabeth
would be urged to rest while Mary cooked the meals, fed the
chickens (if there were chickens), tended to the little labors of
that quiet household. And in the evenings after prayer two such
women would sit and ponder the promise God had made to save
the world. And there is this to remember (then you know she
stayed): this child who was expected was to go before the path of
her own Son, and prepare His ways. With all her heart Mary would
have wanted to see and assist at his birth.
Elizabeth brought forth her son, St. Luke says, to the delight of her
family and neighbors, and announced on the day of his circumcision
that he would be called John. What? protested her friends and
relatives, John! No one in the family was named John. Far better to
name him for his father, Zachariah. Quite sure Zachariah would want
precisely that, they made signs to him to make his wishes known.
Zachariah asked for a writing tablet. On it he wrote the words: “John
is his name” — and immediately was able to speak. Such a fear came
on the neighbors that they whispered about all the hill country: “What
then will this child be?”
