CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION TO INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

1.1 Introduction

Training is one of the prerequisites that must be taken by every student of University
Malaysia Pahang, UMP as it is a part of major requirement of their course. During this
period, students can gain the knowledge and the experience and skills of the various
forms of work performed. The students can also apply the theories they have learned in
a practical form. In addition, it aims to provide opportunities for students to relate the
theories learned while in the lecture class by real work. It also can improve
communication skills as well as inculcate the spirit with productive work and good
relationships with other employees.

Therefore, the university will be able to strengthen its curriculum and produces quality
graduates. From this programme, the students will also develop skills in work ethics,
communication and management. This Industrial training Programme is also a shared
social obligation for both University Malaysia Pahang and the practical company
involved.

In order to fulfill the requirement of the university and complete my course structure of
Bachelor (Hons) in Civil Engineering, I had undergone my 9 weeks Industrial Training
in a company Selia Selenggara Engineering Sdn Bhd (SSESB). I have completed 9
weeks of my industrial from 03rd July 2017 until 01st September 2017.

1
1.2 Objective of Industrial Training

Industrial Training Objectives are Include:

i) Effectiveness Of Communication

Effective communication is fostered during industrial training. Two-way

communication that occurs not only between students and workers, but from various
parties, i.e. students with employers, customers, suppliers, and other parties. Students
should be prepared to face various situations and communicate well, so that accurate
information can be sent and received clearly.

ii) Applying the rules of ethics and good working

Every organization has its ethics and rules. Students must perform a given task properly
and in accordance with a predetermined time based on work rules that have been set.
Students must be prepared to receive instructions from time to time.

iii) To provide exposure to the working world

Through industrial training, students can indirectly feel and understand the real situation
of the working environment. The experience can be gained for the benefit of future
employment.

iv) Build Individual Personality Industrial Training Can Build Self Confidence Of
Students

Various kinds of people and situations to be faced and the scope are broader than when
learning sessions in the classroom. Some students thought patterns can be drafted and
shyness to communicate with the public could be solved, can indirectly build a
successful individual personality.

v) Generate reports for the industrial training

Provision of an industrial training report can train students to write technical reports and
orderly

2
1.3 EXPERIENCE GAINED OF INDUSTRIAL TRAINING

The training is aimed at providing an opportunity for students to better understand the
real working environment. Students are given the opportunity to practice the knowledge
acquired during the theoretical to the practical learning. Theory and practice are two
things that are equally important for adaptation. The students are able to think outside
the box thinking that the theory is not necessarily the same as practicable, in other
words, what we learn is not necessarily equal to the actual situation. Among the
interests of industry training are:

i) Students can practice the real working environment.

ii) Students can practice the safety rules in the industry.

iii) Can identify the problems that arise and how to progress.

iv) Can add more experience in their respective fields.

v) To broaden our interaction with employees in the organization

DATA COLLECTION
There will be two type of data output needed for ELMOD 6 which is;
o Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD)
o Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP)

Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD)

Introduction
The Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) that is used to
evaluate the structural condition of pavements. The FWD will produce a dynamic impulse
load that stimulates a moving wheel load and will measure the maximum surface deflection.

Dynamic Cone Penetrometer (DCP)

Introduction
The procedure of obtaining and measuring drilled cores from pavement for determining the
thickness of bituminous layer beside its crack depth from the coring on the pavement and the
thickness and bearing capacity of the sub-base and sub-grade.

Elmod 6
Elmod is stand for Evaluation of Layer Moduli and Overlay Design. Under team Elmod 6, the
raw data from data collection will be converted into F25 using Dynatest software or F20 using
Grontmij software. Then, all the data will be imported into database. Thickness of layer will
be inserted from the summary of DCP into structure. Next, click moduli to view the plot and
the result. Lastly, import all the result to Microsoft Excel.

Generate FWD report

Using Elmod 6 result that had been imported into Microsoft Excel, generate FWD report by
copy paste data from Elmod 6 result into FWD template.

Preteam Template
Data from FWD report been copy and paste into Preteam template.

Pre-HDM4
Pre-HDM4 function is final check the data from preteam template. It is to make sure all the
data in in the right table before run into HDM-4 software.

32
HDM-4 Software
HDM-4 is short form from Highway Development Model. HDM-4 software used to analysis
road management and investment alternatives. Output from HDM-4 will give recommended
maintenance and rehabilitation treatment type on each pavement section, budget to maintain
the network at various level of serviceability and also prediction of how fast the pavement will
deteriorate.

3.9 Axle Load survey
Axle Load
Introduction
Axle load surveys provide invaluable and essential information that are required for cost
effective pavement design and preservation of the existing road. However, such surveys can
be expensive and must be carefully planned and organized to ensure the accuracy and
minimize resources wastage.
Axle load survey carried out to determine the damaging factor/equivalent factor (E.F) of
commercial vehicle in a relation to single standard axle. The E.F is calculated using the
relationship:
E.F = (N/8.16)*4.5
E.F = Equivalent factor or damaging effect
N= axle load in tones

Traffic count
Traffic count is conducted to determine the number, movement and classification of roadway
vehicles at given location. These data can help to identify critical flow time periods, determine
the influence of large vehicles or pedestrians on vehicular traffic flow or document traffic
volume trends.
Traffic count survey will be conducted simultaneously with the axle load survey.

CHAPTER V

CONCLUSION

5.1 Firstly

Based Industrial Training conducted during the first semester, I have learned many things
besides rewarding experience. In conclusion, this industry training has given me a lot of
exposure to the real working environment.

Besides, I can find out more about the environment that exists in the workplace. Apart
been given the opportunity to learn and recognize the administrative organization of
management of a company and see how management is implemented. Also, I can train
myself to have a high level of discipline, but can understand the ins and outs of the job in a
company.

CHAPTER VI

COMMENTS AND SUGGESTION

6.1 Comment

After undergoing industrial training in Selia Selenggara Engineering SDN BHD for 9 weeks,
there are many things I have learned along the engineering department. As usual any
applicable case there is good and bad, as well as industrial training.

This firm is very good training for the student because it is more beneficial. With existence of
this training, I was expose to the nature of real job. Other than that I can learn more technical
skill that can be develop through this company and this can give an advantage to me in the
future. I was also given a chance to experience work in office and work at site which I can
identify myself which I will prefer the most.

6.2 Suggestion

There a lot of work that relate with what I’m study in class that was doing here and 9 week is
not enough for me to study and focus to all scope of work in here. So I suggest that Civil
Engineering faculty need to extend more time for student to undergo and learn all work on
their industry place.
