“A” Level Annotations: The text is extensively annotated with copious margin notations. Active and
close reading is obvious. The annotations demonstrate a comprehensive and thoughtful reading that
suggests a layered analysis of the text. The margin notes show that the reader has made insightful
connections and drawn valid and insightful conclusions including extensive analysis of writing strategies
(literary elements, literary/rhetorical devices, and structure).

The annotations demonstrate that the reader understands the text beyond the literal level and has been
able to make connections and draw conclusions including consideration of writing strategies (literary
elements, literary/rhetorical devices, and structure).
“C” Level Annotations: The text shows few marginal notes and/or marginal notes are basic and consist
mainly of questions and/or summary. Annotations indicate a basic understanding of the text. The reader
has been able to make some connections and some conclusions. The reader may have attempted to
consider the use of writing strategies (literary elements, literary/rhetorical devices, and structure).
