CAUTION
Exercise extreme care when working on aircraft batteries. Do not use metal
brushes or metal brush supports for cleaning. Remove all metallic articles
from hands. These may cause short circuit when comes in contact with cell
terminals which may result in severe skin burns and damage to the battery.
Use safety goggles, gloves & apron while working.

BATTERY ACCEPTANCE CHECK

A.
- While receiving the battery, check that it is complete in all respect including
documents.
- Visually inspect the battery container, cover and external connector for any
mechanical damage.
- Remove the cover of the battery. Visually inspect cell links, terminal post for
condition, overheating and looseness.

- Unscrew the vent valves with the help of valve key but should not
be removed.
B. INITIAL/ROUTINE CHARGE
NOTE: Unless otherwise indicated HBL Ni-Cad batteries are always supplied
with electrolyte in discharged condition. Before placing it into service, it is
necessary to charge as described below.
Connect the battery to the tester with appropriate connecting lead and
charge the battery fully by using any following methods.

Method No.1 :
Charge at 0.1C1 Amperes until the battery voltage reaches an average 1.5V
per cell (30V for 20 cells battery) or 10 hours whichever is later.
Continue the charging at the same current rate for additional 4 hours.
Total duration should be 14 to 16 hours(normally not recommended).
OR
Method No.2 :
Charge at 0.5C1 Amperes for at least 2 hours till the battery voltage reaches
an average 1.55V per cell (31V for 20 cells battery). Total duration should
not exceed 2 hours and 30 minutes.
Continue the charging at 0.1C1 Amperes current for additional 4 hours.
OR
Method No.3 :
Charge at C1 Amperes for at least 1 hours till the battery voltage reaches an
average 1.57V per cell (31.4V for 20 cells battery). Total duration should not
exceed 1 hour and 15 minutes.
Continue the charging at 0.1C1 Amperes current for additional 4 hours.

At the end of the charge, measure and record the individual cell voltage
and terminal voltage.

C. ELECTROLYTE LEVEL ADJUDTMENT
- Near the end of the recommended constant current charge cycle,
check the electrolyte level and adjust if necessary with distilled water
using syringe.
- Remove the vent screw and insert the syringe nozzle to the cell till it
rests on the seat of the vent screw. Withdraw the plunger and see any
liquid is drawn into the syringe. If not, inject measured quantity of
distilled water to the cell to obtain the correct level.
- Follow the same procedure for the remaining cells.

D. FINAL JOB
- Allow the battery to rest for few hours.
- Close the vent plugs of the cells. Clean the battery.
- Install the cover of the battery.
- Complete the documentation.
