Diabetes is a serious disease that affects millions of Americans, many of whom are undiagnosed or unaware they have it. Over 29 million Americans have diabetes, including over 1.4 million new cases diagnosed each year. More than 1 in 10 adults over age 20 have diabetes and must take medication daily, including many who inject insulin up to 9 times per day. Children born with diabetes also require regular insulin injections. The speaker aims to research oral insulin as an alternative to injections to help improve quality of life for those living with diabetes.

Introduction: “Im going to start off by asking you a question.

In your opinion, what is the

deadliest disease? Just give me a response, there is no wrong answer. Any volunteers?
Interesting, I agree with all of your ressponses. However, I find it interesting that no one
has mentioned diabetes. Now, none of you are wrong but I am simply implying that the
range of responses I received from all of you reflects the perception of the general
public. I have witnessed the detrimental effects of diabetes, for example some of my
friends and family have it, which is why I chose to research this disease. Over time, I
narrowed this down to the study of oral isulin.. To help represent the full scale of this
disease, I can tell you that 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, but
8.1 million may be undiagnosed and unaware of their condition. Also, about 1.4 million
new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in United States every year. More than one in
every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes. All these people have to take
some form of medication, or they will suffer extreme complications in the future. A major
portion of these people have to inject insulin 9 times a day.

Kids who are born with it even have to use these needles. How do you think they feel?

As you can see, this is a very serious issue that needs to be dealt with.
