Contractions With Not Lesson

This lesson plan teaches students about contractions with "not" through creating a folding chart. Students will explore example contractions, construct their own folding charts with contractions written on two sides, and present their work on a post-it note. The folding chart allows students to see contractions combined with an apostrophe when folded. Different modalities and levels of Bloom's Taxonomy are addressed. Formative assessments include the folding chart and a closing activity having students write contractions.

Objective(s)
Students will be able to construct a folding chart.
(1c: Setting Instructional Outcomes)
Students will be able to write words that use the contractions with not using an apostrophe.
- SMARTBoard with blank sheet to write on
Technology Materials/ Resources
- Paper for each student
(1d: Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources)
- Two different colored writing utensils for each student
- Directions on board
Teacher will start by writing a few words in a word splash that contain an apostrophe.
Anticipatory Set
Teacher will then ask students to name words that have an apostrophe in it.

1. Fold your paper in half and then unfold it.
Provide detailed steps.
2. Fold both sides of your paper to meet the center line and leave it folded.
3. Put model word on one side and “not” on the other side at the top.
4. Open two sides and put the two words together with the apostrophe under the
words.
Independent Practice:

6. Cut in between each word until you get to the folded line.
7. Product is finished, and now when you fold back the two words, you can see
them combined with the apostrophe!

Closure Teacher will ask students to write on their post-it note a contraction word with not. They
(1e: Designing Coherent Instruction) will be instructed to cross out the letter that’s dropped and circle the apostrophe. They will
then post them on the board.

- Visual, auditory, and tactile learners will be reached throughout the lesson
Differentiation
- Application level of Bloom’s Taxonomy will be reached when they make their
folding charts
- Evaluation level of Bloom’s Taxonomy reached when they decide which letter to
remove and where to add the apostrophe
- Students already know what an apostrophe is, so this lesson will give them a tool to
remember how and where to use it
- Variety of writing utensils
Accommodations
