APPENDIX F

English Communications Program

1.1. English Communications Program


Students will receive comprehensive training in english language, communication and
professionalism from semester 1-6 that focuses on building a high level of global
competency. The program will focus on comprehension, fluency, grammar and
spoken english while building competence in technical and business english. Students
will also learn employability specific skills like writing resumes, cover letters, job
applications, email etiquette etc.
The intent of the English Communications Program is to create engineers of an
international standard being derived from prevalent best practices, recommendations
by AICTE and Graduate Attributes for communication.

Reference for Languages (CEFR) level of B1/C2 where they will be able to communicate in English
effectively while being sensitive to contextual considerations and deal with unfamiliar topics.

10. Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the
engineering community and with society at large, such as being able to comprehend and write
effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations and give and receive
clear instructions.

1. General English {Recommended Compulsory}


The study of this course will provide a fundamental grounding to students in English writing
and grammar. The focus of this course would be to teach the language through multi-sensory
measures like films, plays, debates, poetry writing, role play; all in conjunction with each
other.
● Reading: scanning, developmental reading.
● Grammar: synonyms and antonyms, numerical adjectives, conjunction and
propositional clauses, noun and adjective clauses, abbreviations, acronyms and
homonyms, phrasal verbs and idioms, relative clauses, imperative and infinitive
structures, question pattern, auxiliary verbs, contrasted time structures, adverbial
clauses, intensifiers, sentences.
● Writing: sentence construction, prose development.
● Research Papers: research methodologies, research tools, note taking and academic
writing.

2. Spoken English {Recommended Compulsory}


This course will enable students to speak fluently without hesitations, interjections, revisions
or repetition of phrases. They will be able to present an idea verbally without much difficulty.
The focus of this course will be on experiential learning by exposing students to real world
scenarios in actuality and through case studies, role play etc.
● Listening: dictation, note taking, develop skills to listen and retain/ reproduce
information.
● Understanding: comprehend spoken English- accented and unaccented, tone and
mood of speech.
● Speaking: use of words in context, use of formal expressions, pronunciation, sentence
construction, pace and pauses; and logically respond to queries, directions or
objections.

3. Technical English
This course will focus on English and technical concepts enabling students to develop a
writing and speaking style relevant to the engineering workplace. They will learn to
communicate with reduced ambiguity, improve clarity of technical writing and better
comprehend their peers. Students can learn this through techniques of stimulations, mentoring
from industry experts, peer interactions and other forms of learning.
● Language Focus: technical vocabulary, technical concepts.
● Reading: intensive reading, predicting content, interpretation, inferential information,
implication, user manuals.
● Writing: different kinds of technical documents, technical writing process, forms of
discourse, writing drafts and revising, collaborative writing, creating indexes,
technical writing style and language, editing strategies.

4. Business English
This course will focus on business scenario and terminology encountered by technical
professionals, enhancing their verbal proficiency and ability to present written and visual
information.Students can learn this through techniques of improvisation, simulated scenarios,
field trips, mind mapping and other forms of hands-on learning.
● Speaking: interruption, addressing officials, group discussion, team presentation.
● Writing: reports, project proposals, brochures, newsletters, manuals, official notes,
types of business letters, memos, progress reports, documentation techniques-minutes
of meetings and event report.

5. Employment Specific Skills


The purpose of this course is to equip students for the recruitment process and to enter the
workplace as confident and aware employees. This will enable them to develop skills for self
sufficiency in an ever changing professional environment. Students can learn this through
techniques of role play, mock interviews, dummy sites and others forms of experiential
learning.
● Digital Presence for Networking: website, blog, portfolio building and management,
linkedin, twitter (networking/ social media platforms).
● Employment Essentials: resume, cover letter, job application, email etiquette.

6. Communication Skills
The study of this course will focus on the practice of English within the workplace and social
settings. This will make engineers more confident and give them the necessary skills to strive
for better employment opportunities. Students can learn this through techniques of theatre,
debates, extempore, poetry recitation and other participatory forms of learning.
● Public Speaking: oral presentation, powerpoint presentation, team group discussion,
interviews, pitching, storytelling.
● Body Language: active listening, voice modulation, spatial sensitivity, posture
register.
● Visual Representation: infographics, colour coding, visual hierarchy for information
● Context Specific: adapting to your audience, communicating across cultures,language
etiquettes in social and office settings.

GOALS
Students are expected to develop their ability to exchange thoughts, ideas, and opinions through both
oral and written discourses in English. The knowledge of this language will become literal rather than
at inferential level.
● Be able to use English effectively in day-to-day conversation in the workplace.
● Improve existing language skills to communicate confidently with colleagues and
seniors in engineering setting.
● Develop necessary language skills required for social interaction.
● Be able to write communication material in a prescribed format and in a coherent
manner.
● Ability to read and comprehend different types of written material and make notes in
English.
● Use correct grammar while speaking and writing, and be able to communicate on the
same footing with global clients.
● Understand and be able to communicate in active business and technical discussion.
● Be able to comprehend technical writing material and satisfactory writing skill in
engineering report writing.
● Be able to define communication objectives.
● Writing,evaluating and revising prose material.
● Successfully communicate electronically as an individual and team member.
● Students will engage in self development activities increasing their uniqueness.
