Pe Tutorial 4 PDF

This document discusses three-phase controlled rectifiers and their analysis. It contains 7 questions: 1. Analyzes a three-phase half-wave controlled rectifier supplying a resistive-inductive load. Derives the average output voltage expression and determines voltages/currents for different firing angles. 2. Asks to sketch waveforms for a three-phase single-way rectifier supplying an R-L load, with and without a bypass diode, and derive expressions. 3. Derives an expression for the RMS voltage of a p-pulse converter with resistive load and continuous current. 4. Derives an expression for the RMS voltage of a p-pulse converter with

Three-phase controlled rectifier

1. The load in Fig.1 consists of a resistance and a very large inductance. The
inductance is so large that the output current io can be assumed to be continuous and
ripple-free. The load is supplied from an ideal three-phase half-wave controlled
rectifier.
(a) Sketch a set of waveforms, for thyristor firing angle α = 45°, showing:
supply voltages (vAN , v BN , v CN ) ,Load voltage vo, and load current io .
(b) Derive an expression for the average value Vave of the load voltage.
(c) Determine the average value of the output voltage and current if the phase
voltage is Vmax = 450 V and R= 100 ohms when α = 0°, α = 60°, and α = 120° .
(d) How is the average load voltage affected if thyristor S2 failed to open circuit?

2-Sketch the waveform across an R-L load (L—>∞) for a 3-phase single way (half-
wave) converter with delay angle α = 60° (a) without, (b) with bypass diode.
Derive, in each case, expressions for the mean d.c. voltage and deduce waveforms
of transformer secondary current.

3-Show that for a p-pulse converter with purely resistive load, where the delay angle
α is restricted so that the load current is continuous, the r.m.s value of d.c. voltage is
given by :

Where Vs is the r.m.s value of the transformer secondary voltage secondary

voltage/phase.

4-Show that for a p-pulse converter with a purely resistive load, where the delay

angle α is such that the load current is discontinuous, the r.m.s. value of d.c.

voltage is given by:

Where Vs is the r.m.s value of the transformer secondary voltage/phase.

5. 6. A three-phase, star-connected, sinusoidal voltage supply has a peak voltage Em
per phase. This supplies power to a load resistor through a three-phase, full-wave,
diode bridge rectifier. Sketch the circuit arrangement and give the waveform of a
phase current in correct time-phase to the corresponding supply phase voltage. Sketch
the waveform of the load current for a supply cycle and derive an expression for its
average value in terms of Em and R. Explain what you would expect to be the lowest
order of harmonic ripple frequency in the load current. What effect would be caused
to the phase current waveform by (i) large load inductance, (ii) large supply
inductance and large load inductance?
