Asia Pacific (Indonesia)
1. Dust level test
a. Scope

To describe for assessment of dust remaining on cleaned steel surface prepared for
painting.

b. Equipment and tools

1. Clear / transparent adhesive tape.
2. White paper.
c. Reference and standard.
1. ISO 8502-3 Assessment of dust on steel surfaces prepared for painting
(pressure-sensitive tape method)
d. Procedure.
1. At the beginning of each series of test, remove and discard the first three turns
of tape from the roll and remove a piece about 200 mm length.
2. Touching the adhesive side of tape only at the end, press about 150mm of the
freshly exposed tape firmly on the surface under the test.
3. Place the thumb across one end of the tape and move the thumb while mining a
firm pressure at a constant speed along the tape three times in each direction.
So each stroke takes between 5 and 6 second.
4. Remove the tape from the test surface, place it on an appropriate display board
by rubbing with the thumb.
5. Assess the quantity of dust on the tape by comparing visually an area of the tape
with equivalent sized areas of the pictorial references shown in the figures.
6. Acceptance of the maximum dust level is level-1.

Asia Pacific (Indonesia)
2. Salt contamination test
a. Scope

To describe of extracting for analysis, soluble salt contaminations from a surface by

use of flexible cells in the form of adhesive patches which can be attached to any
surface.

b. Equipment and tools

1. ELCOMETER 138 HORIBA conductivity
2. Elcometer 135B Bressle Patch.
3. Syringe with needle, 3 ml.
4. Distilled water.

c. Reference and standard.

1. ISO 8502-6 : Extraction of soluble contaminants for analysis- The bressle
method.
2. ISO 8502-9 : Field method for the conductometric determination of water soluble
salts.
d. Procedure.
1. Take the adhesive patch of suitable size (12.5 cm). Remove the protective paper
and punch-out material.
2. Press the adhesive side of the patch against the steel surface in such way that
the minimum amount of the air is trapped in the compartment of the patch.
3. Fill the syringe with deionised water (3ml).
4. Insert the syringe needle at an angle of about 30 degree to the test surface near
the outer edge of the patch. Passing it through the adhesive foam body of the
patch into the compartment formed between the elastomer film and the test
surface.
5. Inject the distilled water (3ml) ensuring that it wets the whole test surface.
6. After suitable period of time, suck the distilled water back into the syringe.
7. Re inject the distilled water back into the compartment.
8. At the end of circle retrieve as much as possible of the distilled water.
9. Place the distilled water with enough volume to the tool, the conductivity
(µS/cm).
10. To determine of soluble salt surface density, use the equation below.

Cn x 1.2 (mg/m²)
Cn = (C2 – C1) (µS/cm)
C1 = Pre-test Reading (Blank water reading).
C2 = Test reading
11. Acceptance criteria for salt contamination test is max. 60 mg/m2.

Asia Pacific (Indonesia)
3. Microclimate Check.
a. Scope
- To obtain and check the microclimate data and to ensure that microclimate
reading is meet to continued painting activity.
b. Equipment and tools.
- Use of Sling psychrometers to obtain dry bulb/wet bulb
- Steel temperature.
- Dew point calculator.
c. Reference and standard.
- ISO 8504-4
d. Procedure.
1. Verify wick cleanliness.
2. Saturate wick and/or fill reservoir with water
3. Whirl or spin carefully the hygrometer slightly faster at 180 spins /revolutions
per minute (3 revolution per second) for 0.5 minute.
4. Read both thermometers, wet bulb temperature first.
5. Make/ perform at least two (2) spins/ whirlings.
6. Record dry & wet bulb temperatures of both thermometers.
7. Determine/ calculate the Relative Humidity (%RH) and the Dew
8. Point Temperature using the Mollier’s Diagram or Dew Point Calculator
9. Report the following: Date & Time of Monitoring, Air & Steel Temperature, Dew
Point Temperature, % Relative Humidity (RH).
10. RH shall be below 85% and Steel temperature not less than 3 degree above
dew point temperature.

4. WFT
a. Scope

To determine of wet film thickness of organic coatings such as paint, varnish, and
lacquer.

b. Equipment and tools.

- WFT Gage – Comb Type
c. Reference and standard.
1.ASTM D1212 - 91(2013) Standard Test Methods for Measurement of Wet Film
Thickness of Organic Coatings.
d. Procedure.
1. Prepared the WFT gauge – comb type.
2. Once after test plate already painted, touch the surface of appropriate side WFT
gauge to test plate surface.
3. Let’s touch the side for about 2 second. And lift it from the surface.
4. Touch the side with wet painted to the paper to get the WFT reading.
5. WFT reading depends on spec DFT and Volume solid of paint system.

9. Connect the head to the dolly to be tested by pulling back snap on ring, pushing
the head and release the snap on ring. Increase the pressure slowly by turning
the handle clockwise until either the maximum stress or failure is reached.
