Christian Community Bible (CCB), Catholic Pastoral Edition, Revised Edition

The Joyful Mysteries

I. The Annunciation:
1. Luke 1:26-27 – In the sixth month, the angel Gabriel was sent from God, to a town of Galilee called
Nazareth. He was sent to a virgin, who was betrothed to a man named Joseph, of the family of David;
and the virgin’s name was Mary.
2. Luke 1:28-29 - The angel came to her and said, “Rejoice, full of grace, the Lord is with you!” Mary was
troubled at these words, wondering what these greeting could mean.
3. Luke 1:30-31 – But the angel said, “Do not fear, Mary, for God has looked kindly on you. You shall
conceive and bear a son and you shall call him Jesus.
4. Luke 1:32 – He will be great, and shall rightly be called Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give
him the kingdom of David, his ancestor; he will rule over the people of Jacob forever;
5. Luke 1:33 - and his reign shall have no end.”
6. Luke 1:34 – Then Mary said to the angel, “How can this be, since I am a virgin?”
7. Luke 1:35 – And the angel said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you and the power of the Most
High will overshadow you; therefore, the holy child to be born of you shall be called Son of God.
8. Luke 1:36 – Even your relative, Elizabeth, is expecting a son in her old age, although she was unable to
have a child; and she is now in her sixth month.
9. Luke 1:37 – With God nothing is impossible.”
10. Luke 1:38 – Then Mary said, “I am the handmaid of the Lord, let it be done to me as you have said.”
And the angel left her.

II. The Visitation:

1. Luke 1:39-40 – Mary then set out for a town in the hill country of Judah. She entered the house of
Zechariah and greeted Elizabeth.
2. Luke 1:41-42 - When Elizabeth heard Mary’s greeting, the baby leapt in her womb. Elizabeth was filled
with the Holy Spirit, and, giving a loud cry, said, “You are most blessed among women; and blessed is
the fruit of your womb!
3. Luke 1:43-44 – How is it, that the mother of my Lord comes to me? The moment your greeting
sounded in my ears, the baby within me suddenly leapt for joy.
4. Luke 1:45 – Blessed are you, who believed that the Lord’s word would come true!”
5. Luke 1:46-47 – And Mary said, “My soul proclaims the greatness of the Lord, my spirit exults in God,
my savior!
6. Luke 1:48-49 – He has looked upon his servant, in her lowliness, and people, forever, will call me
blessed. The Mighty One has done great things for me, Holy is his Name!
7. Luke 1:50-51 – From age to age, his mercy extends to those who live in his presence. He has acted
with power and done wonders, and scattered the proud with their plans.
8. Luke 1:52-53 – He has put down the mighty from their thrones, and lifted up those who are
downtrodden. He has filled the hungry with good things, but has sent the rich away empty.
9. Luke 1:54-55 – He held out his hand to Israel, his servant, for he remembered his mercy, even as he
promised to our fathers, to Abraham and his descendants forever.”
10. Luke 1:56 – Mary remained with Elizabeth about three months, and then returned home.

III. The Nativity:

1. Luke 2:1-3 – At that time, the emperor issued a decree for a census of the whole empire to be taken.
This first census was taken when Quirinus was governor of Syria. Everyone had to be registered in his
own town. Everyone had to be registered in his own town. So everyone set out for his own city.
2. Luke 2:4-5 – Joseph, too, set out from Nazareth of Galilee. As he belonged to the family of David,
being a descendant of his, he went to Judea, to David’s town of Bethlehem, to be registered with Mary,
his wife, who was with child.
3. Luke 2:6-7 – They were in Bethlehem when the time came for her to have her child; and she gave
birth to a son, her firstborn. She wrapped him in torn rags, and laid him in a feeding trough, because
there was no place for them in the inn.
4. Luke 2:8-9 - There were shepherds camping in the countryside, taking turns to watch over their flocks
by night. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared to them, with the glory of the Lord shining around
them. As they were terrified,
5. Luke 2:10-11 – the angel said to them, “Don’t be afraid; I am here to give you good news, great joy for
all the people. Today, a Savior has been born to you in David’s town; he is the Messiah and the Lord.
6. Luke 2:12 – Let this be a sign to you: you will find a baby wrapped in torn rags and lying in a feeding
trough.”
7. Luke 2:13-14 – Suddenly, the angel was surrounded by many more heavenly spirits, praising God and
saying, Glory to God in the highest, and Peace, on earth, to those whom God loves.”
8. Luke 2:15-16 – When the angels had left them and gone back to heaven, the shepherds said to one
another, “Let us go as far as Bethlehem, and see what the Lord had made known to us.” So they came
hurriedly, and found Mary and Joseph, and the baby lying in the feeding trough.
9. Luke 2:17-18 – On seeing him, they related what they had been told about the child; and all were
astonished on hearing the shepherds.
10. Luke 2:19-20 – As for Mary, she treasured all these words, and pondered them in her heart. The
shepherds then returned, giving glory and praise to God for all they had heard and seen, just as the
angels had told them.

IV. The Presentation in the Temple:

1. Luke 2:22 – When the day came for the purification according to the law of Moses, they brought the
baby up to Jerusalem, to present him to the Lord,
2. Luke 2:23-24 – as it is written in the law of the Lord: Every firstborn male shall be consecrated to God.
And the offered a sacrifice, as ordered in the law of the Lord: a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.
3. Luke 2:25 – There lived in Jerusalem, at this time, a very upright and devout man named Simeon; the
Holy Spirit was in him. He looked forward to the time when the Lord would comfort Israel;
4. Luke 2:26 – and he had been assured, by the Holy Spirit, that he would not die before seeing the
Messiah of the Lord.
5. Luke 2:27-28 – So, he was led into the temple by the Holy Spirit, at the time the parents brought the
child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the law. Simeon took the child in his arms and
blessed God, saying,
6. Luke 2:29-32 – Now, O Lord, you can dismiss your servant in peace, for you have fulfilled your word
and my eyes have seen your salvation, which you display for all the people to see. Here is the light you
will reveal to the nations, and the glory of your people Israel.”
7. Luke 2:33-34 – His father and mother wondered at what was said about the child. Simeon blessed
them, and said to Mary, his mother, “Know this: your son is a sign; a sign established for the falling and
rising of many in Israel, a sign of contradiction;
8. Luke 2:35 – and a sword will pierce your own soul, so that, out of many hearts, thoughts may be
revealed.”
9. Luke 2:36-37 – There was also a prophetess named Anna, daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher.
After leaving her father’s home, she had been seven years with her husband; and since then, she had
been continually about the temple, serving God, as a widow, night and day, in fasting and prayer. She
was now eighty-four.
10. Luke 2:38 – Coming up at that time, she gave praise to God, and spoke of the child to all who looked
forward to the deliverance of Jerusalem.

V. The Finding in the Temple:

1. Luke 2:41-42 - Every year, the parents of Jesus went to Jerusalem for the Feast of the Passover, as was
customary. And when Jesus was twelve years old, he went up with them, according to the custom of this
feast.
2. Luke 2:43 – After the festival was over, they returned, but the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem; and
his parents did not know it.
3. Luke 2:44 – They assumed that he was in their group of travelers, and, after walking the whole day,
they looked for him among their relatives and friends.
4. Luke 2:45 – As they did not find him, they went back to Jerusalem, searching for him;
5. Luke 2:46 – and, on the third day, they found him in the temple, sitting among the teachers, listening
to them and asking questions.
6. Luke 2:47 – And all the people were amazed at his understanding and his answers.
7. Luke 2:48 – His parents were surprised when they saw him; and his mother said to him, “Son why
have you done this to us? Your father and I were very worried while searching for you.”
8. Luke 2:49-50 – Then he said to them, “Why were you looking for me? Did you not know that I must be
in my Father’s house?” But they did not understand this answer.
9. Luke 2:51 – Jesus went down with them, returning to Nazareth, and he continued to be obedient to
them. As for his mother, she kept all this things in her heart.
10. Luke 2:52 – And Jesus increased in wisdom and age, and in divine and human favor.

The Sorrowful Mysteries

I. The Agony in the Garden:

1. Matthew 26:36 – Jesus came with them to a place called Gethsemane, and he said to his disciples, “Sit
here while I go over there to pray.”
2. Mark 14:33-34 – But he took Peter, James and John along with him, and, becoming filled with fear and
distress, he said to them, “My soul is full of sorrow, even to death. Remain here and stay awake.”
3. Matthew 26:39 – He went a little farther and fell to the ground with his face touching the earth, and
prayed, “Father, if it is possible, take this cup away from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will.
4. Luke 22:43 – And from heaven there appeared to him an angel, who gave him strength.
5. Luke 22:44 – As he was in agony, he prayed even more earnestly, and great drops of blood formed
like sweat and fell to the ground.
6. Mark 14:37-38 – Then he came and found them asleep; and he said to Peter, “Simon, are you
sleeping? Couldn’t you stay awake for one hour? Stay awake and pray, all of you, so that you may not
slip into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the body is weak.
7. Matthew 26:42 – He went away again, and prayed, “Father, is this cup cannot be taken away from me
without my drinking it, your will must be done.”
8. Matthew 26:43 – When he came back to his disciples, he, again, found them asleep, for they could not
keep their eyes open.
9. Matthew 26:44 – So leaving them again, Jesus went to pray for the third time, saying the same words.
10. Matthew 26:45-46 – Then he came back to his disciples and said to them, “You can sleep on now and
take your rest! The hour has come, and the Son of Man will be handed over to sinners. Get up, let us go!
See, the betrayer is here!

II. The Scourging at the Pillar:

1. Luke 23:13-14 – Pilate then called together the chief priests and the elders and the people, and said
to them, “You have brought this man before me and accused him of subversion. In your presence I have
examined him and found no basis for your charges;
2. Luke 23:15-16 – and neither has Herod, for he sent him back to me. It is quite clear that this man has
done nothing that deserves a death sentence. I will therefore have him scourge and then release him.”
3. John 18:39 – Now, according to custom, I must release a prisoner to you at the Passover. With your
agreement I will release to you the King of the Jews.”
4. Mark 15:10 – for he realized that the chief priests had handed Jesus over to him out of envy.
5. Matthew 27:19 – While Pilate was sitting in court, his wife sent him this message, “Have nothing to do
with that holy man. Because of him, I had dream last night that disturbed me greatly.”
6. Luke 23:18-19 – Shouting as one man, the crowd protested, “No! Away with this man! Release
Barabbas instead!” This man had been thrown into prison for an uprising in the city and for murder.
7. Mark 15:12-14 – Pilate replied, “And what shall I do with the man you call King of the Jews?” The
crowd shouted back, “Crucify him!”
8. Luke 23:22-23 – A third time Pilate said to them, “Why, what evil has he done? Since no crime
deserving death has been proved, I shall have him scourged and let him go.” But they went on shouting
and demanding that Jesus be crucified, and their shouts grew louder.
9. Matthew 27:24-25 – Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, and that there could be a riot. He asked
for water, washed his hands before the people, and said, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. Do what
you want!” And all the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!”
10. John 19:1 – Then Pilate had Jesus taken away and scourged.

III. The Crowning with Thorns:

1. Mark 15:16-17 – The soldiers took him inside the courtyard, known as the praetorium, and called the
rest of their companions. They clothed him in a purple cloak, and twisting a crown of thorns, the forced
it onto his head.
2. Matthew 27:29-30 – Then weaving a crown of thorns, they forced it onto his head, and placed a reed
in his right hand. They knelt before Jesus and mocked him, saying, “Hail, king of the Jews!” They spat on
him, took the reed from his hand and stuck him on the head with it.
3. John 19:4-5 – Pilate went outside yet another time and said to the Jews, “Look, I am bringing him out,
and I want you to know that I find no crime in him.” Jesus came out wearing the crown of thorns and the
purple cloak, and Pilate pointed at him, saying, “Behold the man!”
4. John 19:6 – On seeing him the chief priests and the guards cried out, “Crucify him! Crucify him!” Pilate
said, “Take him yourselves and have him crucified, for I find no case against him.”
5. John 19:7 – The Jews then said, “We have a law, and according to the law this man must die because
he made himself Son of God.”
6. John 19:8-9 – When Pilate heard this he was more afraid. And coming back into the court he asked
Jesus, “Where are you from?” But Jesus gave him no answer.
7. John 19:10-11 – Then Pilate said to him, “You will not speak to me? Do you not know that I have
power to release you, just as I have power to crucify you?” Jesus replied, “You would have no power
over me unless it had been given to you from above; therefore the one who handed me over to you is
more guilty.”
8. John 19:12 – From that moment Pilate tried to release him, but the Jews cried out, “If you release this
man, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who makes himself a king is defying Caesar.”
9. John 19:13-14 – When Pilate heard this, he had Jesus brought outside to the place called the Stone
Floor -in Hebrew Gabbatha-and sat down in the Judgment seat. It was the day of preparation for the
Passover, about noon. Pilate said to the Jews, “Behold your king!”
10. John 19:15 – But they cried out, “Away! Take him away! Crucify him!” Pilate replied, “Shall I crucify
your king?” And the chief priests answered, “We have no king but Caesar!”

IV. The Carrying of the Cross:

1. John 19:16-17 – Then Pilate handed Jesus over to them to be crucified. They took Jesus and led him
away. Bearing the cross, Jesus went out of the city to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew
Golgotha.
2. Luke 23:26 – When they led Jesus away, they seized Simon of Cyrene, arriving from the countryside,
and laid the cross on him to carry it behind Jeus.

yourself; take up your cross and follow me.
4. Matthew 10:38 – And whoever does not take up his cross and follow me, is not worthy of me.
5. Matthew 11:29-30 – Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble of heart;
and you will find rest. For my yoke is easy; and my burden is light.”
6. Luke 23:27 – A large crowd of people followed him; among them were women, beating their breasts
and grieving for him,
7. Luke 23:28 – but Jesus turned to them and said, “Women of Jerusalem, do not weep for me! Weep
rather for yourselves and for your children,
8. Luke 23:29 – for the days are coming when people will say, ‘Happy are those who have not given birth
or nursed a child!’
9. Luke 23:30 – And they will say to the mountains, ‘Fall on us!’ and to the hills, ‘Cover us!’
10. Luke 23:31 – For if this is the lot of the green wood, what will happen to the dry?”

V. The Crucifixion:
1. Luke 23:33 – There, at the place called the Skull, he was crucified together with two criminals-one on
his right and another on his left.
2. John 19:19-20 – Pilate had notice written and fastened to the cross, which read: Jesus the Nazarene,
the King of the Jews. Many Jewish people saw this title, because the place where Jesus was crucified was
very close to the city; and the title was written in Hebrew, Latin and Greek.
3. Luke 23:34-35 – (Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”) And
the guards cast lots to divide his clothes among themselves. The people stood by, watching. As for the
rulers, they jeered at him, saying to one another, “Let the man who saved others now save himself, for
he is the Messiah, the chosen one of God!”
4. Luke 23:42-43 – And he said, “Jesus, remember me, when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus
replied, “In truth I tell you, today, you will be with me today in paradise.”
5. John 19:26-27 - When Jesus saw the mother, and the disciple whom he loved, he said to the mother,
“Woman, this is your son.” Then he said to the disciple, “This is your mother.” And from that moment
the disciple took her to his own home.
6. Mark 15:33-34 – When noon came, darkness fell over the whole land and lasted until three o’clock;
and at three o’clock Jesus cried out in a loud voice, Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabachthani?” which means, “My
god, my God, why have you deserted me?”
7. John 19:28-29 – Jesus knew all was now finished and, in order to fulfill what was written in Scripture,
he said, I am thirsty. A jar full of bitter wine stood there; so, putting a sponge soaked in the wine on a
twig of hyssop, they raised it to his lips.
8. John 19:30 – Jesus took the wine and said, “It is accomplished.” Then he bowed his head and gave up
the spirit.
9. Luke 23:45-36 – The sun was hidden, and darkness came over the whole land until mid-afternoon;
and, at that time, the curtain of the Sanctuary was torn in two. Then Jesus gave a loud cry, “Father, into
your hands I commend my spirit.” And saying that, he gave up his spirit.
10. John 19:33-34 – When they came to Jesus, they saw that he was already dead, so they did not break
his legs. One of the soldiers, however, pierced his side with a lance, and immediately there came out
blood and water.

The Glorious Mysteries

I. The Resurrection:
1. Mark 16:9-11 - After Jesus rose early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary of
Magdala, from whom he had driven out seven demons. She went and reported the news to his
followers, who were now mourning and weeping. But when they heard that he lived, and had been seen
by her, they would not believe it.
2. Mark 16:12-13 – After this he showed himself in another form to two of them, as they were walking
into the country. These men also went back and told the others, but they did not believe them.
3. John 20:19 – On the evening of that day, the first day after the Sabbath, the doors were locked where
the disciples were, because of their fear of the Jews. But Jesus came, and stood among them, and said to
them, “Peace be with you!”
4. Luke 24:38-39 – but he said to them, “Why are you upset, and does such an idea cross your minds?
Look at my hands and feet, and see that it is I myself! Touch me, and see for yourselves, for a ghost has
no flesh and bones as I have!”
5. Luke 24:41-43 – Their joy was so great that they still could not believe it, as they were astonished; so
he said to them, “Have you anything to eat? And they gave him a piece of broiled fish. He took it, and
ate it before them.
6. John 20:21 – Again Jesus said to them, “Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, so I send you.”
7. John 20:22-23 – After saying this, he breathed on them, and said to them, Receive the Holy Spirit!
Those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; those whose sins you retain, they are retained.”
8. Luke 24:46-47 – “So it was written: the Messiah had to suffer, and on the third day rise from the dead.
Then repentance and forgiveness in his name would be proclaimed to all nations, beginning from
Jerusalem.
9. Luke 24:48-49 – And you are witnesses of these things. And that is why I will send you what my Father
promised. So remain in the city until you are clothed with power from on high.”
10. Acts 1:5 - John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit within a few days.”

II. The Ascension:

1. Luke 24:50 - Jesus led them almost as far as Bethany; then he lifted up his hands and blessed them.
2. Acts 1:6-7 – When they had come together, they asked him, “Is it now that you will restore the
kingdom of Israel?” And he answered, “It is not for you to know the time and the steps that the Father
has fixed by his own authority.
3. Acts 1:8 – But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you; and you will be my
witnesses in Jerusalem, throughout Judea and Samaria, even to the ends of the earth.”
4. Matthew 28:18-20 – All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore, and
make disciples of all nations. Baptize them in the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy
Spirit, and teach them to observe all that I have commanded you. I am with you always, even to the end
of the world.
5. Mark 16:16 – The one who believes and is baptized will be saved; the one who refuses to believe will
be condemned.
6. Mark 16:17-18 – Signs like these will accompany those who have believed: in my name they will cast
out demons and speak new languages, they will pick up snakes, and if they drink anything poisonous,
the will be unharmed; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will be healed.”
7. Mark 16:19 – So then, after speaking to them, the Lord Jesus was taken up into heaven and took his
place at the right hand of God.
8. Acts 1:10 - While they were still looking up to heaven, where he went, suddenly, two men dressed in
white stood beside them
9. Acts 1:11 – and said, “Men of Galilee, why do you stand here looking up the sky? This Jesus, who has
been taken from you into heaven, will return in the same way as you have seen him go there.”
10. Luke 24:52-53 – They worshipped him, and then returned to Jerusalem full of joy; and they were
continually in the temple, praising God.

III. The Descent of the Holy Spirit:

1. Acts 2:1-2 –When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. And suddenly, out
of the sky, came a sound, like a strong rushing wind; and it filed the whole house where they were
sitting. There appeared
2. Acts 2:3-4 – tongues, as if of fire, which parted and came to rest upon each one of them. All were
filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak other languages, as the Spirit enabled them to speak.
3. Acts 2:5-6 – Staying in Jerusalem were religious Jews from every nation under heaven. When they
heard this sound, a crowd gathered, all exited, because each heard them speaking in his own language.
4. Acts 2:7-8 – Full of amazement and wonder, they asked, “Are not all these who are speaking
Galileans? How is it, that we hear them in our own native languages?
5. Acts 2:9-10 – Here are Parthians, Medes and Elamites; and residents of Mesopotamia, Judea and
Cappadocia; Pontus and Asia; Phrygia, Pamphylia, Egypt; and parts of Libya belonging to Cyrene; and
visitors from Rome;
6. Acts 2:11 - both Jews and foreigners who accept Jewish beliefs, Cretians and Arabians; and all of us
hear them proclaiming in our own language what God, the Savior, does.”
7. Acts 2:12-13 –They were amazed and greatly confused, and they kept asking one another, “What does
this mean?” But others laughed and said, “These people are drunk.”
8. Acts 2:14-15 – Then Peter stood up with the Eleven and, with a loud voice, addressed them, “Fellow
Jews and all foreigners now staying in Jerusalem, listen to what I have to say. These people are not
drunk as you suppose, for it is only nine o’clock in the morning.
9. Acts 2:16-17 – Indeed what the prophet Joel spoke about has happened: In the last days, God says, I
will pour out my Spirit on every mortal. Your sons and daughters will speak through the Holy Spirit; your
young men will see visions and your old men will have dreams.
10. Acts 2:40-41 – With many other words Peter gave the message; and appealed to them, saying, “Save
yourselves from this crooked generation.” So, those who accepted his word were baptized; some three
thousand persons were added to their number that day.

IV. The Assumption:

1. Revelation 11:19 – Then, the Sanctuary of God, in the heavens, was opened, and the Ark of the
Covenant of God could be seen inside the Sanctuary. There were flashes of lightning, peals of thunder,
an earthquake, and a violent hailstorm.
2. John 15:1-3 – I am the true vine and my Father is the vine grower. If any of my branches doesn’t bear
fruit, he breaks it off; and he prunes every branch that does bear fruit, that it may bear even more fruit.
You are already made clean by the word I have spoken to you.
3. John 15:4-5 – Live in me as I live in you. The branch cannot bear fruit by itself, but has to remain part
of the vine; so neither can you, if you don’t remain in me. I am the vine and you are the branches. As
long as you remain in me and I in you, you bear much fruit; but apart from me you can do nothing.
4. John 15:6 – Whoever does not remain in me is thrown away, as they do with branches, and they
wither. Then they are gathered and thrown into the fire and burned.
5. John 15:7-8 – If you remain in me and my words remain in you, you may ask whatever you want, and
it will be given to you. My Father is glorified when you bear much fruit: it is then that you become my
disciples.
6. John 15:9-10 – As the Father has loved me, so I have loved you. Remain in my love! You will remain in
my love if you keep my commandments, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and remain in
his love.
7. John 15:11 – I have told you all this, that my own joy may be in you, and your joy may be complete.
8. John 15:12-13 – This is my commandment: Love one another as I have loved you! There is no greater
love than this, to give one’s life for one’s friends;
9. John 15:14-15 – and you are my friends, if you do what I command you. I shall not call you servants
any more, because servants do not know what their master is about. Instead, I have called you friends,
since I have made known to you everything I learned from my Father.
10. John 15:16-17 – You did not choose me; it was I who chose you and sent you to go and bear fruit,
fruit that will last. And everything you ask the Father in my name, he will give you. This is my command,
that you love one another.
