Ideal Models of Engine Processes

The document outlines ideal process assumptions and combustion models for engine cycles. It describes the compression, combustion, expansion, and exhaust processes as adiabatic or reversible. Combustion can occur at constant volume, constant pressure, or a combination of the two. Thermal efficiency and mean pressure equations are provided for the constant volume, constant pressure, and limited pressure combustion cycles. The slow diesel engine cycle uses a limited pressure combustion model.

Combustion (2-3) Adiabatic
Combustion occurs at : -Constant volume
-Constant pressure
-Part at constant volume and part
constant pressure (called limited
pressure)
Combustion is complete  c = 1
Expansion (3-4) Adiabatic and revesible
Exahaust (4-5-6) Adiabatic
And - Valve events occur at top and
Intake (6-7-1) bottom center
- No charge in cylinder volume as
- Pressure differences across open
valves drop to zero
-Inlet and exhaust pressures
constant
-Velocity effects negligible

where :  = cp/cv - Specific heat ratio

Mean pressure of cycle pt
