Williams Blogs

This document outlines a 4th grade science lesson plan that uses blogs and websites to teach students about sound production and communication using light and sound. Students will use everyday objects from home to experiment with how sound changes with vibrations. They will then record their observations on individual blogs. Later, students will design devices to communicate across distances and present their results to the class. The teacher aims to promote exploration, differentiation, and higher-order thinking through these technology-integrated activities.

Lesson Idea Name: Good Vibrations
Content Area: Science
Grade Level(s): 4th Grade

Content Standard Addressed: S4P2. Obtain, evaluate, and communicate information about
how sound is produced and changed and how sound and/or light can be used to communicate.

1. Plan and carry out an investigation utilizing everyday objects to produce sound and predict the
effects of changing the strength or speed of vibrations.
2. Design and construct a device to communicate across a distance using light and/or sound.

1. Technology Standard Addressed: Design and develop digital age
learning experiences and assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and assessments incorporating
contemporary tools and resources to maximize content learning in context and
to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identied in the Standards•S.
a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote
student learning and creativity
b. Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all students to pursue their individual
curiosities and become active participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own
learning, and assessing their own progress
c. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working
strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources
d. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative assessments aligned with content and
technology standards, and use resulting data to inform learning and teaching

Levels of Technology Integration (LoTi Level):

☐ Level 1: Awareness ☒ Level 2: Exploration ☐ Level 3: Infusion ☐ Level 4: Integration

☐ Level 5: Expansion ☐ Level 6: Refinement

Universal Design for Learning (UDL):
I would use this to allow students to broaden their understanding by exploration. I will give the instructions
out on the blog by an Audio file. Then after they are done with the activity they will record their answers on
their own blog page.
Lesson idea implementation:

Classroom Blog and Website Creation Tools
The students will be using tools from their own home to predict and see what kind of sounds those objects
make when you change the strength or speed of vibrations. I will introduce the project by demonstrating it in
class with an object, but I will not give a detailed explanation of the information yet because I want them to
explore and find out on their own. It depends on the student on how long it will take, but it should not take
any longer than an hour. The students will be assessed by completing the work and seeming like they put
thought and time into it. The final product will hopefully introduce the ideas of the lesson to the student. This
will also help differentiate learning because each student will be able to use something from their own home,
so they can hopefully connect and remember the items better than me just giving them the tools.

I will extend this to a higher learning level by having the students explore more with different sounds and
vibrations maybe with simulations on the computer or with different experiments in class. I will conclude the
lesson by having the students create a device to communicate across a distance using light or sound. I will
provide feedback to the students about their work by allowing them to demonstrate and present their work
to the class and I will have them test it out. If it works, then that is good. However, if it does not work then I
will scaffold them into realizing the errors they made and then I will have them go back and fix it.
Importance of technology:
This project could be done without technology. However, it is super important to use it because it helps make
the content more fun and engaging to the students. If we lost the technology it could hurt the exploration of
the process because if I did not have simulations or other things such as videos the students would not be
able to see that content in many different formats.
Inspiration (optional):

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:
I think with simulations, I would need to make sure that the students can actually access the simulations I am
trying to get them to use by username and password. I would also need to check out the privacy settings that
my school district has on blogs and different interactive websites. I would first check with my school district
and their policies. Then, I would check the privacy settings and features of the blogs and simulations I am
trying to use. Then if that all checked out, I would send a permission form home to the student’s parents.
Reflective Practice:
I hope these activities expand student learning. I want them to be able to explore and really come to an
understand on their own on how to experiment and find out different things on their own. To extend the
lesson, I would have them watch simulations or videos. Then based on how they are doing, I would have them
create their own design and create their own device to hear sound or see light through.
