Purpose
Part I: The purpose of this part was to confirm the presence of Chloride ion and Sulphate Ion in
the solution provided. Sulphate test includes adding barium ion into acidified solution. The acid
helps to make the test specific.
Part II: The purpose of this part was to test for acidity using Phenolphthalein indicator that turns
pink in basic solutions and remains colorless in neutral and acidic solutions. This was to be
achieved through converting a metal into its oxides, test the oxides including water and finally
neutralize the solution.
Part III: The purpose of this part was to confirm the presence of Carbonate ions in the solution
provided. The substance provided was to be reacted with both a weak and strong acid liberating
carbon dioxide gas. The contrast action of these acids helps to achieve the desired results.
Part IV: The purpose of this part was to confirm the presence of Iron (III) ion using a solution
containing thioncyanate ion.
Part V: The purpose of this part was to confirm the presence of chlorine in sodium hypochlorite.
Reacting sodium iodide and adding drops of bleach yields the desired results.
Part VI: The purpose of this part was to confirm the presence of zinc metal in a penny by
reacting the penny with HCl and comparing the final and the initial masses.
Part VII: The purpose of this part was to determine the relative acidity of vinegar, lime juice, 7-
Up and apple juice using Phenolphthalein indicator and NaOH solution.
Part VIII: The purpose of this part was to confirm the presence of Ammonium ions using litmus
paper on ammonia solution. A reaction between fertilizer and NaOH also helps to achieve the
desired results by testing the resulting solution using litmus paper.
Procedure Any Changes to be Made
Materials and Method:
Part I: 3M HNO3 was prepared then a small
amount of Epson salt placed into the solution.
1-2 drops of BaCl2 were then added then observations
made.
Part II: A 2-inch strip of Magnesium was burned in the
Bunsen burner flame then the residue dissolved in water.
The resultant solution tested for the acidity using

phenolphthalein indicator.
Part III: A substance containing bicarbonate ion was
reacted with vinegar and HCL in separate test tubes
and the observations noted
Part IV: 0.5 mL of iron (III) Chloride reacted with
ammonium thiocyanate in a test tube and the results
noted including the color of the resultant solution.
Part V: A small amount of Sodium iodide was
dissolved in water and 5 drops of bleach added.
The resultant color of the solution recorded.
Part VI: A penny was initially weighed and
then put in a beaker of 2 mL dilute HCL.
The reaction allowed to proceed for sometimes
then the penny was taken out, rinsed with
distilled water and its mass weighed again.
Changes on the penny were also noted.
Part VII: Vinegar, lime juice, 7-Up and
apple juice were put into different test tubes
then a drop of phenolphthalein added to each test tube.
1.0 M NaOH solution was also added dropwise into
each solution and the results noted.

Part VIII: 5 mL ammonium solution was put in a

beaker then a moist red litmus paper held over the mouth
of the beaker. The observations were recorded.
Again a small amount of fertilizer was put in a
beaker of 1 mL dilute NaOH and the results noted.
