The document discusses standard form for polynomials, which is writing terms in descending order according to powers with the highest power first. It provides examples of writing polynomials in standard form, proving polynomial identities are true by factoring both sides, finding coefficients of terms, and determining if equations with hidden terms are identities by looking at the standard forms of both sides. The document contains tips, definitions, and examples related to working with polynomials in standard form.

07 Standard Form of Polynomials

In this lesson, you will learn:
• The proper way to write a polynomial
• Tips and tricks to doing problems involving polynomial

Standard Form

Definition of Standard Form: Terms are written in descending order according to powers.
Note: Some mathematicians call it "general" form.

Example:
Write in standard form: 4x2 - x5 + 8 - 7x

Coefficient: The multiplier of a term

Constant: Number only, no variable. Power of x is 0.

Example:
Prove this identity is true:
x6 - 1 = (x - 1)(x + 1)(x2 + x + 1)(x2 - x + 1)

Note:
"Identity" simply means both sides are
equal

2 Polynomials Page 1
Example:
Determine the coefficient of x7
in (x + x2 + x3 + x4 + x5)2

Sometimes, it's easier creating a

table.

Example:
Below is the equation of a polynomial.
Both sides are in standard form. A few
terms are hidden. Is this an identity?
Explain.
+ 3x2 + + 6 = x3 + 3x2 + 
