In Choosing Priorities, The IEP Team Should

This document outlines the components and purpose of an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). It discusses that an IEP has 4 quarters to outline the student's strengths and weaknesses. It also describes that an IEP includes annual goals, short-term objectives, teaching procedures, and priorities for each developmental domain. Annual goals should be measurable and describe what a student can reasonably achieve in a year. Short-term objectives show the steps to achieve annual goals. The IEP is designed to plan for a student's educational needs through collaboration between parents, educators, and support staff.

Priorities in the different areas/domains for the 4 quarters

The IEP process remains a valuable means of collaboratively planning for the educational needs
of students. It brings together parents/careers, educators, specialist support staff and the student
(where appropriate) as a team to consider the student's current level of performance and to
determine the student's educational needs and future learning priorities. In a IEP, there are 4
quarters each quarter represent the overview of the weaknesses and strengths does the child have.

Quarter Annual Goal Activity Short-Term Objectives Teaching Procedures

Annual Goals- are the IEP’s team best estimate of what the students can accomplish in the next
year. Characteristic of Annual Goal

o Measurable in such a way the descriptions of what a child reasonably be expected

to accomplish within a 12 month period with the provision of the Special
Education and related services.
o The annual goals in the IEP are statements that describe what a child with a
disability can reasonably be expected to accomplish within the duration of the
IEP.

Short Term Objectives very specific statements that show the process in which we expect the
child to achieve the terminal objectives.

In choosing priorities, the IEP team should

consider the whole range of student development, keeping in mind the
following:
• student’s values and goals
• parents’ values and goals for the student
• urgency of the need
• contribution to overall achievement and transfer to various curricular
areas
• importance in social development
• usefulness in other environments
• age appropriateness
• instructional time and available resource
The student’s current level of performance in each targeted domain is

described in the IEP. This information is available in the student profile

completed in the previous stage and is the basis of the team’s planning.
Identifying the student’s current level of performance in each domain is
essential to
• selecting appropriate student specific outcomes
• determining ways to adapt materials, instructional strategies, and
assessment procedures
• assessing student progress. The student’s levels of performance when
the IEP is developed serve as a baseline for assessment when the IEP
is reviewed.

As parents of special needs kids, it is our responsibility to help guide, direct and advocate
for our children's education.  I happen to live in a school district where this is a relatively easy
task.  Not all parents here agree with me, so it's up to us, as our child's best advocates, to ensure
that our children are getting what they need and deserve from the school system.  That's where
the Individualized Education Plan comes in.

ALL goals should reflect concerns that were stated in the present level. Nothing should
just appear in the IEP without being able to be traced back to demonstrated concerns or
deficiencies.

To identify the student's strengths and needs clearly, as the basis on which an
appropriate special education program and services are developed

To provide a starting point from which to measure the student's progress towards
achieving the learning expectations and annual goals set out in the IEP

To inform the student, parents, and teachers of the goals towards which the student is
progressing through the achievement of the learning expectations set out in the IEP

The IEP will be reviewed to ensure that the annual goals outlined meet the
requirements described above.

The IEP will be reviewed to ensure that the student's learning expectations have been
designed and recorded according to the requirements set out above.

To ensure that an appropriate range of methods and strategies is used to give the
student the opportunity to demonstrate the full extent of his or her achievement of the
learning expectations

To ensure regular evaluation and reporting of the student's achievement of the learning
expectations
To ensure that students who have an IEP are given the opportunity to participate and
demonstrate the full extent of their knowledge and skills in provincial assessments

The IEP will be reviewed to ensure that a parent/student consultation form is included,
that it meets the requirements described above, and that it gives evidence of
appropriate consultation with parents and the student.

To ensure the effectiveness of the IEP through proper implementation and monitoring

To ensure that the student's special education program and services remain effective
and appropriate to the student's needs and strengths over time

Compliance With the Standard

The IEP will be reviewed to ensure that any revisions to the plan have been noted and
dated in the IEP, and that the consultation with parents and the student regarding the
revision has been recorded on the parent/student consultation form.
