STS Printing Press

Gutenberg started experimenting with printing in 1440 and had perfected the printing press by 1450. The printing press was groundbreaking as it replaced hand copying manuscripts with movable metal type that could be arranged and reused to print multiple copies of a page. This allowed for mass production of texts and greatly increased the spread of information and ideas. The printing press is credited with helping to standardize languages and contributing to the decline of Latin's dominance.
