STAAD Pro Tutorial - Lesson 03 - Geometry Tools

This document describes 16 geometry modeling and editing tools in STAAD Pro including adding and editing node coordinates, using a beam grid system, inserting nodes on beams, adding beams between points or midpoints, stretching beams, intersecting beams, merging beams and nodes, splitting beams, breaking beams at nodes, moving, rotating, mirroring, performing translational and circular repeats, and using the structure wizard to create new models from templates.

Geometry Modeling and Editing Tools

1. Add/Edit Node Coordinates using Tables
Menu: Geometry > Nodes
Displays the "Nodes" table. You can edit or add new nodes by
entering the coordinates. Existing node coordinates can be
edited as well.

2. Add nodes and Beams using the Beam grid System

Menu: Geometry > Snap Grid/Node > Beam
Activates the beam grid. Using the grid, node points and beams
can be added. The Grid Control can be used to modify the grid.

3. Add nodes on to a Beam

Menu: Geometry > Insert Nodes
To add additional nodes to an existing beam.
Modes are:
(a) A node can be added by defining its distance or in proportion to the beam length
(b) To add a node at the centre of the beam
(c) To add ‘n’ numbers of equally spaced nodes on the beam

4. Add Beams
Menu: Geometry > Add Beam
> Add Beam from Point to Point
> Add Beam Between Mid Points
> Add Beam by Perpendicular
Intersection

5. Stretch Existing Beams

Geometry > Stretch Selected Members
Select the Member to be stretched and go to Geometry > Stretch Selected Members.
Select a stretching method
Click "Apply"

6. Intersect Beams

This is required to connect crossing members (beams that are intersection each other with a
tolerance range) and create common node points.

To highlight the beams that can be intersected

Geometry > Intersect Selected Beams > Highlight

To intersect the beams

Geometry > Intersect Selected Beams > intersect

7. Merge Beams
This is used to join collinear beams. Beams that have nodes along it can be merged into one beam
segment.

Select the Beams to be merged and go to

Geometry > merge selected members

8. Merge Nodes
This is used to define a common node and remove the nearby nodes. The beams that were
connected to the nearby nodes will be reconnected to the common node.

Select the nodes to be merged

Geometry > Merge Selected nodes

9. Split Beam
This is used to Divide the beams into parts. This is same as Insert node method.
Geometry > Split Beam

10. Break Beam at selected nodes

The beam will be divided at the nodes that are along the line of the beam.
Geometry > Break Beam at selected nodes

11. Move
This tool can be used to mode a node, Beam, plates etc. Select the entity to be moved
Geometry > Move >
( or pick the element and press "F2" function key)

12. Rotate
This is used to rotate entities about an axis

Select the entity to be rotated

Geometry > Rotate

13. Mirror
This is used to create a mirrored copy of the selected entities.

14. Translational Repeat

This is used to create many copies of the selected entities in an orthogonal direction ( i.e. In
global X,Y or Z direction). A default spacing between each consecutive steps can be defined and if
required individual step spacing can be edited as well.

By default, the associated beam property and loads are also associated to the repeated beams.
If link steps are enabled, the nodal points are joint by additional members. Useful when modeling
columns of buildings.

15. Circular Repeat

This is used to create many copies of

the selected entities (and its associated
properties and loads etc) in a circular
pattern. But if “Geometry only” is
enabled, then only the geometry is
repeated.

16. Geometry > Run Structure Wizard

This is used to use templates and create new models.
