Gibbs Reflective Cycle (1988)

The aims of using Gibbs’ reflective cycle:


• To challenge your assumptions
• To explore different/new ideas and approaches towards doing or
thinking about things
• To promote self-improvement (by identifying strengths and
weaknesses and taking action to address them)
• To link practice and theory (by combining ‘doing or observing with
thinking or applying’ knowledge)

ACTIVITY :

1. Think of an instance you observed this week that could have been
approached differently (something that made an impact on you and
that you are prepared to share)

2. Using Gibbs Reflective Cycle (as above) REFLECT on how you


would do things differently if confronted again with a similar
situation in the future.
3. Complete the following table with your reflections and thoughts

Description What happened?

Feelings What was I thinking and feeling at the time?

Evaluation What was good or bad about the experience?

Analysis What sense can I make of the situation? What does it mean for me?

Conclusion What else could I have done?

Action Plan If it arose again what would I do?

4. Think about the following:


a. How valuable was the reflective tool in identifying any strengths
and weaknesses and perhaps identifying different ways of
addressing the incident?’
b. Was Gibbs’ model easy to use?
c. Do you have a greater understanding of reflective thinking and of
using a reflective learning model like Gibbs’ model?
