Assignment Chemistry Bro Alif

The document discusses various chemistry concepts including the rarest element in the earth's crust (astatine), proton number and nucleon number, atomic and molecular masses, types of ions and their names and formulas, salt compounds and their uses. It provides examples and definitions for these topics, such as defining isotopes as atoms of the same element with different neutron numbers.

Interesting fact about chemistry!

The rarest naturally-occuring element in the earth’s crust is

astantine

Named after the Greek word for unstable (astatos), Astatine is a naturally
occurring semi-metal that results from the decay of uranium and thorium. In
its most stable form, the element has a half-time of only 8.1 hours. The entire
crust appears to contain about 28 g of the element. If scientists ever have to
use it, they basically have to make it from scratch. Only 0.00000005 grams of
astatine have been made so far.
Proton number,nucleon number and isotope
1) Definition:

i)Proton number(Z)=The number of protons in the atomic nucleus

ii)Nucleon number(A)=The total number of protons and neutrons in the

atomic nucleus

2)Choose one atom and one monoatomic ion : Atom =Silicon-28

Monoatomic ion =CaCO-3

3)Subatomic Particles

Elements Proton Neutron Electron

a)Silicon-28 14 28-14=14 14
b)Calcium 20 20 20
c)Carbon 6 6 6
d)Oxygen 8 8 8

4) Isotopic notation:

i-Silicon-28=

ii-Calcium=

iii-Carbon=

iv-Oxygen=

5) Definiton of isotopes:Two or more atoms of the same element that have the
same number of protons in their nucleus but different number of neutrons

Isotope Proton Neutron

Carbon-12 6 6

Carbon-14 6 8
Atomic and molecular masses

1)Definition of relative atomic mass: The average mass of an atom of an

element, relative to 1/12 the mass of carbon-12

2)Choose one atom and find its atomic mass in a.m.u:

Atom-Aluminium

Atomic mass-13(no.of proton)+14(no.of neutron)=27 amu

3)Ar=Average mass of aluminium

1/12 X mass C-12

=27 X 12.00 amu

1/12 X 12.00 amu

=324.0

4)Definition of relative molecular mass: The average mass of one molecule of a

compound to 1/12 mass of one atom of carbon-12

5)Choose one molecule and find its molecular mass in amu:

Molecule-Sodium carbonate,Na2CO3

Molecular mass-(23 X 2)+12+(16 X 3)=106 amu

6)Mr of sodium carbonate=106 amu

1/12 X 12.00 amu

=106.0

Salt and their uses:
*Write the molecular formula and the IUPAC nomenclature of 5
salts

Name of ions Molecular formula IUPAC nomenclature

1)Na+,Cl- 23 + 35=58 amu Na++ Cl- NaCl

2)Cu+,O2- 64 + 16(2)=64 + 32 Cu+ +O2- CuO
=96 amu
3)Be2+,OH- 9(2) + 16 +1=18 + Be2+ + OH-
17=35 amu
4)Al3+,O2- 27(3) +16(2)= Al3+ + O2-
81 + 32=113 amu
5)Cu+,CO2- 64 + 12+ 16(2)= Cu+ + CO2-
76 + 32=108 amu

*Choose any three salts(either salts written above or not written

above),describe their uses in our life

1)Copper(II)sulphate-Pesticides

2)Potassium chlorate-used as a substitute for patients who

need a low intake of sodium salt

3)Potassium manganite(VII)-suitable for use as an

disinfectant
