“It’s a Good Life” – Jerome Bixby

After reading the short story “It’s a Good Life”, answer the following questions.

1. What is the first indication in the story that Anthony is a ‘special’, or supernatural
individual?

2. When Bill Soames arrives at the Fremont house and speaks with Aunt Amy, Aunt
Amy complains about the heat. Explain the manner in which Bill Soames reacts
to Aunt Amy’s complaint and after having read the story explain how Bill’s
reaction is an example of foreshadowing.

3. Jerome Bixby creates suspense in the story by being elusive. Identify aspects of
the story that Bixby is elusive about. In other words, what details of the story does
Bixby make the reader wonder about?

4. Words like good and fine often appear in italics in the story. What does this
suggest about the manner in which the words are expressed?

5. At what point in the story does the reader realize that Anthony can control
nature?

6. Where in Peaksville does Anthony feel the most comfortable, and why does he
feel so comfortable when he is there?

7. How does Anthony move from the cornfield to the basement, and from the
basement to the attic?

8. Why does everyone come to the Fremont house for television?

9. After reading the story, explain why the citizens of Peaksville have to share
material items like books, pictures, etc?

10. Why does John Sipich tell Dan Hollis that it would be better if his record was not
played?

11. Identify one example of pathetic fallacy in the story and explain how the example
you identify reflects the mood and/or tone of the story’s characters.
