PH4209: Quantum Field Theory 2

1. This homework assignment involves calculating properties of quantum harmonic oscillators and Yukawa theory. Students are asked to: - Calculate commutators of the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian with creation and annihilation operators. - Show that certain states are eigenstates of the Hamiltonian with a discrete, enumerable energy spectrum. 2. For Yukawa theory with a scalar and two fermion fields, students must: - Write down Feynman rules and draw possible 3-point functions. - Draw all connected, one-loop diagrams for a 4-point function and write the expression. - Explain how the Feynman rules and one-loop diagrams would change if a φ3 interaction is

PH4209: Quantum Field Theory 2

1. Heisenberg Algebra and SHO spectrum: The Hamiltonian of simple harmonic oscillator is given
by H = ~ω(a† a + 1/2) where we have [a, a† ] = 1

(a) Calculate the commutator of a and a† with H, i.e. [H, a] etc.

(b) Given H|ψi = Eψ |ψi, the set of {|ψi} form a Hilber space on which the Hamiltonian H acts.
Defining |ξi ≡ a|ψi and |χi ≡ a† |ψi show that |ξi and |χi are elements of the same Hilber
space and eigen states of H.
(c) Knowing that |ξi and |χi are normalizable eigen states and assuming there exists a lowest
energy states show that the spectrum of the Hamiltonian is enumerable as En = ~ω(n + 1/2)
where n = 0, 1, 2, ... (i.e, n is non-negative integer).

2. Yukawa theory with two fermions: Consider the following Lagrangian describing the dynamics
of a scalar (φ) and two fermions (ψe and ψµ ):

1 1
L = (∂ν φ)(∂ ν φ) − m2 φ2 + ψ̄e (i∂ν γ ν − me )ψe + ψ̄µ (i∂ν γ ν − mµ )ψµ
2 2
−ge ψ̄e φψe − gµ ψ̄µ φψµ

(a) Write down the Feynman rules for this Lagrangian in the momentum space.
(b) Draw Feynman diagrams for all possible three point functions in this theory. (Only drawing
and pre-factor counting).
(c) Draw all Feynman diagrams for hΩ|T {φ(x1 )φ(x2 )φ(x3 )φ(x4 )}|Ωi that are connected and have
exactly one loop. Write down the expression for such diagrams.
(d) How the answer in part (a) and (c) will get modified if we add (−gφ3 ) to the above Lagrangian.
(Diagrams and pre-factors only, no expressions required here.)
(e) Write down the matrix-elememnt-square for φ → e+ e− process.
