3 and 4 SEMESTER MAJOR PROJECT GUIDELINES

1. General Guidelines
1. Major Project will commence from the date of registration.
2. Each student is instructed to do the major project individually.
3. The project work should consist of minimum two objectives which can be carried out and
demonstrated in 3rd and 4th semester, respectively, for the purpose of evaluation.
4. The project proposal (mid of 3rd semester), progress reports (end of 3rd semester, mid and end of 4th
semester) are to be duly signed and submitted to the project coordinator or his/her nominee before the
due dates.
5. Project idea should be novel.
6. To ensure proper conduction of each project, progress of each project should be monitored by the
Guide and then by the project evaluation committee.
7. The project evaluation committee should be formed for each student with the guide, one internal
examiner (from the department) and project coordinator(s) as members.
8. Duration for proposal and progress presentation in the 3rd semester are 21-08-2018 to 31-08-2018 and 19-11-
2018 to 26-11-2018, respectively.
9. All students are requested to consult their respective guide and the examiner to fix the exact date
and time of their presentations and inform the project coordinators in advance. Students should also
send the softcopy of the presentation slides to the respective guide(s) at least 03 days in advance. No
absentees and the change of schedule will be entertained.
10. All students must discuss the progress of their work regularly with their guide.
11. Papers originating (if any) from the project work should be submitted to the
journals/conferences only after getting the approval of the guide and all other co-authors of the
paper.
12. All reports should be in the format prescribed in the PG curriculum. A template will be
made available.
13. One copy of the report duly signed by the supervisor must be submitted to the Project
Coordinator or his/her nominee at least three days prior to their presentations. Copy (soft copy or
hard copy) of the report should also be submitted to the Guide and the examiner at least 03 days
before the presentation.
14. The students should meet their examiner by appointment between the date of submission
and the date of presentation, and have a detailed discussion about the work (if requested by the
examiner).
Structure of the Major Project Proposal and Progress

Students are instructed to refer the project proposal and mid & end semester evaluation rubrics for preparing the
proposal and progress reports, respectively.
The project proposal report structure is as follows:

1. Front Page: Must include Title, student name, roll no., guide name, department name, institute name
and logo.
2. Introduction: A write up of about 500 words explaining the importance of the chosen field of work.
3. Problem definition: In about 200 words.
4. Literature Survey: An approx. 1500 words write up about the way the identified problem has been
dealt with in the leading* Journals, etc., in the past at least five years. (* Refers to IEEE, ACM,
Elsevier’s, Springer, Science Direct, SCI- Extended, etc., Listed Journals).
5. Plan of work: A write up of about 1000 words, explaining the proposed plan of work. It MUST also
outline, as to why the chosen path was considered most appropriate.
6. References: List of references to comprise of all sources referred to for the above work and should not
be mixed up with ‘Bibliography’. Do follow the NITK Referencing Style.

Project Progress Report Template

1. Front Page: Must include Title, student name, roll no., guide name, department name, institute name
and logo.
2. Introduction: A write up of about 500 words explaining the importance of the chosen objective.
3. Literature Survey: An approx. 1500 words write up about the way the identified objective has been
dealt with in the leading* Journals, etc., in the past at least five years. (* Refers to IEEE, ACM,
Elsevier’s, Springer, Science Direct, SCI- Extended, etc., Listed Journals).
4. Proposed solution: A detailed write up of approx. 3000 words, explaining the proposed solution and its
experimental outcome(s).
5. Plan of work: A write up of about 800 words, explaining the remaining plan of work. It MUST also
outline, as to why the chosen path was considered most appropriate.
6. References: List of references to comprise of all sources referred to for the above work and should not
be mixed up with ‘Bibliography’. Do follow the NITK Referencing Style.

Students are instructed to properly cite Photos, Pictures, Texts, etc., in the report and must list the source of
it in references. Not doing so will be categorized as Plagiarism, and those reports will be rejected.
