Composite Beams Flowchart

This document summarizes checks to be performed on a steel beam and composite beam-slab system for a construction project. It includes: 1) Checks on the steel beam for shear, bending, lateral buckling and deflection under construction loads. 2) Checks on the composite section to calculate effective slab width, check shear connection capacity, plastic resistance moment, longitudinal shear, and deflection under composite loading. 3) Results showing the composite section meets requirements for shear capacity, moment capacity, and deflection limits.

CONSTRUCTION STAGE
Loads to take into account
1- SW of concrete slab
2- SW of metal deck
3- SW of steel beam
4- Variable action of construction load: 0.75 kPa or 1.5*3*3kN at middle span
Profile: UB 254x146x43
Check the steel section for:
1- Shear resistance given by the steel beam Vsd = 54.00
2- Bending resistance and interaction of M-V Msd = 104.30
3- Lateral torsional buckling of the steel beam Msd = 104.30
4- Deflection due to SD (d1,cs) and LL (d2,cs) d1,cs = 13.52

COMPOSITE STAGE
Loads to take into account
1- SW of concrete slab
2- SW of metal deck
3- SW of steel beam
4- Floor finishes
5- Any other variable action

Check the composite section for:

1- Calculate effective width of flange
2- Check of shear connection (full or partial but always bigger than a minimum value provided by form
3- Check Plastic resistance moment of the composite section
4- Check Longitudinal Shear
5- Deflection check method 1 (no need to take into account any reduction of partial shear connection
Calculate deflection due to Floor finishes (d1,comp) and LL(d2,comp) using n:
n= 13.34
Calculate Jid using n above
Final deflection: d1,cs+d1,comp+d2,comp < L/250
Live load deflection: d2,comp < L/360

Method 2
Calculate deflection due to Floor finishes (d1,comp) using nLT:
nLT = 20.02
Calculate Jid using n above
Calculate deflection due to LL (d2,comp) using nST:
nST = 6.67
Calculate Jid using n above
Final deflection: d1,cs+d1,comp+d2,comp < L/250
Live load deflection: d2,comp < L/360
