ST. PAUL’S EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH

8th Sunday of Pentecost July 15 & 18, 2010

Theme of the Day

Jesus is the Christian’s Greatest Treasure

Hymns: 769 v 1,2 369 341 & 752 & 370 769 v 3,4

Order of Service: Service of Word & Sacrament (p. 26-37)

First Reading: Psalm 47 on page 85 We will sing this Psalm

We praise Jesus, our ascended King, who fills heaven and earth.
As Paul’s letter to the Colossians so clearly states—Jesus is true
God and has saved us from our enemies. Paul then tells us “Sing psalms,
hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God” (Colossians
3:16) - and that is just what we are doing !

Second Reading: John 4:5-18, 25,26

The Samaritan woman “had been looking for love in all the wrong places.”
She had married and divorced five men and was now living with a man
“outside of“ marriage. Right in front of her . . . at the well where she always
drew water. . . was the Savior who could quench the deepest longings of her
soul.

Sermon Text: Colossians 2:8-10

What you’ve longed for . . .
. . . hoped for . . .
. . . searched for . . .
. . . and dreamed of . . .
. . . is all right here . . .
. . . in front of you . . .
in
Christ

John 4:5-18, 25,26

5 So he came to a town in Samaria

called Sychar, near the plot of ground

Jacob had given to his son
Joseph. 6 Jacob's well was there, and
Jesus, tired as he was from the journey,
sat down by the well. It was about the
sixth hour.
7 When a Samaritan woman

came to draw water, Jesus said to her,

"Will you give me a drink?" 8 (His
disciples had gone into the town to
buy food.) 9 The Samaritan woman
said to him, "You are a Jew and I am
a Samaritan woman. How can you ask
me for a drink?" (For Jews do not associate with Samaritans.) 10 Jesus answered
her, "If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink, you would
have asked him and he would have given you living water."
11 "Sir," the woman said, "you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep. Where

can you get this living water? 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob, who gave us
the well and drank from it himself, as did also his sons and his flocks and herds?" 13
Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, 14 but who-
ever drinks the water I give him will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give him will be-
come in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life."
15 The woman said to him, "Sir, give me this water so that I won't get thirsty and

have to keep coming here to draw water." 16 He told her, "Go, call your husband and
come back." 17 "I have no husband," she replied.
Jesus said to her, "You are right when you say you have no husband. 18 The fact is,
you have had five husbands, and the man you now have is not your husband. What
you have just said is quite true."
25 The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he

comes, he will explain everything to us." 26 Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you
am he."

Colossians 2:8-10
8 See to it that no one takes you captive through hollow and deceptive philosophy,

which depends on human tradition and the basic principles of this world rather than
on Christ. 9 For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, 10 and you
have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.

Colossians
Christ is All in All
Outline In Christ You Have Everything

1) For Your Salvation (Chapters 1-2)

2) For Your Sanctification (Chapters 3-4)

Value of letter
Colossians is a proclamation of the Lord Jesus Christ in unparalleled fullness and
depth. The Christian Church which in its creed confesses Jesus to be “God of God,
Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten not made, being of one substance
with the Father” is indebted not the least to this letter. The shallow emptiness of all
human philosophy is no substitute for the treasures of wisdom and knowledge which
can be found only in Christ. The heresy which threatened the faith of the Christians
in Colosse became the occasion for this letter. Joseph - “You meant evil against
me, but God meant it for good” So it is in this letter.

What was the heresy that threatened the church in Colosse?

It is difficult to get a clear and consistent picture of the heresy which threatened Co-
losse, for Paul in his letter to the Colossians does not so much oppose it argumenta-
tively as overwhelm it by confronting it with the whole riches of the true Gospel of
Christ. Elements of this heresy were:

1) “Gnosticism” - The false teachers claimed to have “secret knowledge.”

2) “Legalism” - The false teachers demanded that OT ceremonial laws be obeyed
3) “Asceticism” - The false teacher stressed “self-denial” - “Do not eat or touch!”

In every instance Paul shows how Jesus is vastly superior. All that we need is
found in Christ alone. All that we desire is received not through human wisdom or
effort but is a free gift in our Savior. What made this heresy so dangerous was the
fact that it claimed not to supplant but to supplement the Gospel which the Colos-
sians received. This new teaching called into question and obscured the greatness
of Christ and the complete sufficiency of his atonement. Epaphroditus who founded
the church in Colossae came to Paul – not to speak warmly of their faith and love –
but of his anxiety for it.

PASTOR RECEIVES CALL

On Wednesday Pastor Mike received a call to serve as the future Field
Coordinator for India. The current Field Coordinator, Mark Krueger, plans to retire in
the next couple of years. The Coordinator oversees the mission work our Synod
does in India . He works with two other missionaries and the national pastors of
CELM (Christ Evangelical Lutheran Ministry), our national church in India which has
6,000 members and 100+ churches. The Field Coordinator is the Principal of the
Seminary and Pre-Seminary in India where seventy men are studying to be pastors.
The wife of the Coordinator serves as the overseer for the orphanages in India. He
is being asked to “shadow” the current Field Coordinator, Mark Krueger, until his re-
tirement. Pastor Mike and Cathy ask for your prayers as he deliberates this call.

BLOOD DRIVE - Saturday, July 31st @ 7:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.

Our next blood drive is scheduled for Saturday, July 31st from 7:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.
m. in the Fellowship Hall. (Please note that the times on the bulletin insert are incor-
rect).
All donors at this drive will receive a coupon
for free Culver’s custard as part of the “Give a Pint-Get
a Pint” promotion. The Blood Center of Wisconsin is
the sole supplier of blood products to Fort Atkinson
Hospital and Healthcare, and more than 50 hospitals in
Wisconsin, including Oconomowoc Hospital, Water-
town Hospital, and the Milwaukee Hospitals.
The BloodCenter has expressed a special
plea for donors of O negative type blood as this is the
type used most for every emergency room and on
emergency vehicles, but all types of blood are always
needed. It is important that we maintain an ample
blood supply in our community. The blood that is do-
nated on July 31st could save lives right here in Fort At-
kinson. Call the church office to register to give blood.
Appointments are encouraged, but walk-ins are welcome.

ATTENTION, PARENTS! School Registration Wednesday, Aug 4th @ 3-7 p.m.

Wouldn’t it be a great if our children could learn about Jesus not only in the sum-
mertime with Vacation Bible School—but “all-year-round!” They can do “just that”
by registering them in our Lutheran Elementary School on Wednesday, August 4th
from 3-7 p.m.. Many who have had this privilege regard it as priceless. It is so valu-
able, you cannot put a dollar value on it. If you have questions or would enjoy more
information, call our principal, Mr. Harlan Pelischek at 563-5349.
