Classroom Expectations
Classroom Location
Newport High, #1105 1. Be respectful to those around you.
2. Come to class prepared, and ready to learn.
3. Have fun, and don’t be afraid to ask questions!

activity requires additional materials, I will give notice at least one week prior.

Important Policies

Attendance and Absence

 Attendance is critical! If you are absent, it is important to review materials online,

contact me, and obtain the missed course material as soon as possible.
 Always check the class website and TeacherEase for missed work.
Grading
Grading will be based on a total points system, translated to a percentage and letter
grade, as is common in BSD and beyond. Different types of assignments and
work will be weighted differently, and have a larger or smaller impact on your
final grade. I do not round grades unless there has been a grading error!
A+ 97.00+ C+ 77.00 – 79.99
A 93.00 – 96.99 C 73.00 – 76.99
A- 90.00 – 92.99 C- 70.00 – 72.99
B+ 87.00 – 89.99 D+ 67.00 – 69.99
B 83.00 – 86.99 D 63.00 – 66.99
B- 80.00 – 82.99 D- 60.00 – 62.99
Below 60% (F) is considered a failing grade, and warrants extreme concern.
Fall Semester Schedule

Fall semester will be primarily based in working on CogAT assessment goals and specific gifted program
entrance exam topics. The fall semester will require a textbook for homework assignments, Gifted and Talented
COGAT Test Prep For Children In Grade 2 by Gateway Gifted Resources. Please purchase this book as soon as
possible so that children can get caught up with homework. (Amazon)

Homework Policy

Class periods are devoted to CogAT/Gifted test preparation, language arts, and the sciences. In accordance,
students will take a math placement exam at the beginning of each semester to provide a baseline of their math
skills, and individualized homework will be uploaded onto Google Drive weekly. Math skills will progress and
fluctuate based on performance. I provide the curriculum, while parents are expected to provide instruction and
aid. Math work is always collected and graded.

Other general homework is optional for the fall semester, as the assigned workbook problems will serve as
extension practices of what was taught in class. They will not be collected or graded unless otherwise specified. In
spring semester, language arts and science worksheets will be assigned in addition to math as final review
material, which will also be collected and graded weekly.

Academic dishonesty is not tolerated, and will result in disciplinary action from administration.

Parental Communication

I will send out weekly update emails to all parents, who are expected to read them in their entireties. Parents who
are engaged in their student’s academics will be the most satisfied with what they get out of this course.
TeacherEase (see below) is a congregate program that will allow you to check progress as well as contact me,
which I encourage you to use. I look forward to communicating with you online and in person.

TeacherEase Classroom Database

As a new implementation into this year’s curriculum, I will be using TeacherEase as an online grading system,
work assignment platform, and attendance tracker. It is free to access for all students and parents, and allows you
to contact me through the program directly with questions or concerns. Information about account setup will be
addressed in class.

Class Funds and Prizes

I will be setting up a reward system for students who consistently participate well and turn in their homework.
These rewards will culminate in the end of the class as an opportunity to choose prizes based on behavior
throughout the entire year. These prizes and other classroom materials are purchased entirely from the Classroom
Fund, which comes from parent donations and corporate matching funds. As the students are young, donating to
the fund would directly enhance their classroom experience. Without sufficient funding, student learning cannot
be as rewarding and beneficial. Thank you for understanding, and in advance for contributing.
