Portfolio Materials 1: Jessica Antonette O. Prieto 1AD-3 7am-12nn / Saturday Prof. Noell El Faroll

This portfolio document describes 9 plates created by Jessica Antonette O. Prieto for a materials class. Plate 1 involved creating a linear human sculpture out of wire. Plate 2 tasked students to make a 3D insect or sea creature sculpture out of wire. Plate 3 required wrapping hopia paper around the wire sculpture. Later plates involved recycled paper, paper casting, foam board sculpture, plaster fruit sculpture, plaster molds, and oriental painting using natural pigments. The author found plaster of Paris and recycled materials most interesting to work with and enjoyed collaborating with classmates. Some challenges included the wire sculpture, paper casting, and oriental painting on unsuitable canvases.

Plate #1:
Linear Sculpture

Material:

G.I wire #16

Description:

This plate was made

out of G.I. wire #16. Following
a contour sketch, we were
tasked to create from a wire a
human sculpture. We used
1x1 foot ply wood as base for
the sculpture.
Plate# 2: 3D
Sculpture

Material:

G.I. Wire # 16

Description:

Our second plate is

still made out of wire. But this
time we were tasked to do a
sculpture of a sea creature or
insects. The sculpture should
be in 3D. Before making such
sculpture, we need first to
research about the chosen
insect or sea creature and
study their details.
Plate# 3:
Sculpture Using
Hopia Tracing
Paper

Material:

Hopia Tracing Paper

Description :

Using the second

plate (insect wire sculpture)
as the base, wrap hopia
tracing paper around the
sculpture. Use white glue to
paste the hopia paper. Apply
emulsion for finishing
touches.
Plate# 4:
Recycled Paper

Description:

To make Recycled
paper, you need to use
old/used papers. First is to
tear the papers, dissolve in
water and apply okra for the
paper pulp to stick together.
Then use silk screen to drain
excess water and to get the
form of the paper.
Plate# 5: Paper
Casting

Description:

First, look for a perfect

mold. Apply same method as
previous plate, but let it dry in
your mold. Avoid damaging
the mold, and be careful
peeling off your paper cast.
Plate# 6:
Geometric and
Biomorphic
Sculpture

Material:

Foam board

Description:

The sculpture should

contain both geometric and
biomorphic form in just one
sculpture. No regular form/
object should be made. Just
use white glue to paste foam
boards together. Apply paint
(acrylic) for finishing touches.
Plate# 7: Fruit/
Vegetable
Sculpture

Material:

Plaster of Paris

Description:

Positive and negative

mold made of Plaster of
Paris. I used four segments
of negative mold.
Plate # 8:
Plate# 8: Positive mold using
Positive Mold
using Negative
negative waste mold (Plaster
Waste Mold of Paris)
Description:

This time we can now create positive mold by

breaking the negative mold. The negative mold is made out of
Material:
rubber latex material. After producing the positive mold, carve
Plaster of Paris images related to the figure formed. Research about
microscopic images that has connection to your positive mold.

Plate# 9: Oriental Painting

Material:

Natural colors from pigments

Description:

Create colors using natural materials. After creating colors, we were tasked to create local oriental painting,
making sure the features of an oriental painting is present in your work.
Insights:

I actually find the subject Materials very interesting. From the very start, when I found out

that this is more on making hand-made crafts, I got excited. I thought it was easy at first. But

honestly, it’s not that easy, it requires creativity, concentration and strategies. But still I enjoyed

this course. It’s because I like the challenges it gives. I can say that from the very first plate, until

the end, I improved a lot, and at the same time, still at the process of further improving my

talent.

The first plate was the wire sculpture. I had a hard time dealing with the wires maybe

because I have weak arms. I was not able to produce what I imagined and I lacked time. On the

second plate, wire was still used. This time, I learned from my previous plate what not to do, so I

can say I did better that time. I also had problems with the paper casting. Although I find making

recycled papers easy, I had a hard time making the paper molding. Another plate that was hard

for me was making the oriental painting. I also had a good time producing natural colors from

pigments, but when it’s time to paint, I had a slight problem. The canvass I bought was not that

good. Every time I paint, the colors blot. In my first canvass, it was okay, but my painting was

not. In my second trial, I bought the canvass from a different store. The painting was better but

the colors blot, so I ended up making a slightly messy work.

The material that interests me the most is the plaster of Paris. It was not easy making a

sculpture out of this material, but I enjoyed doing it. I had so many trials before succeeding in

my work. This was my first time, unlike my other blockmates, encountering this material. For

me, that’s a disadvantage. But still, I can say, that my work was successful. I would like to study

more about this material. I thought of using this material to make my own display in room, to

express what I feel inside. I think there’s so many things I can do with this material, so if I have

time. I would like to research more about plaster of Paris.

Like I said earlier, I enjoyed making recycled papers. The procedures were fun, and easy

to make. I liked how old or used papers, can be turned to another home made recycled paper.

Even before entering this course, I like working on recycled materials. The plate where we made

colors from pigments is also a form of recycling. In this plate, I worked with my other

blockmates, and working with them was fun. What’s best about this course and my blockmates

is the way we share ideas and help each other. That even though we had a hard time making

some of this plates, they’re always open to help each other.
