Co Ete: Length Iou L
Co Ete: Length Iou L
The extent of excavations shall be the minimum necessary or practicable in the opinion of the
Engineer for the construction of the Works.
The constwction of open trenches shall, at any one time, be limited to length s_ . ~r_ev iou s ly
approved! by : the Engi neer. Work on each approved length shall be co1~1plete<i to the
satisfaction ofthe Engineerbefore work on any new length is commenced.
The maximum trench width shall be as per the specification. ln the event of any trench for
pipelines being excavated with battered or stepped sides that portion of the trench which
extends from the formation to a point 300 mm above the crown of the pipe when laid in its
correct position shall be formee! with ve1tical si des to the required dimensions.
Excavations for ali other structures, measured at blinding bottom leve!, shall be limited to the
contour-line of the structure plus 1 mon ali sides.
No excavations with battered sides will be permitted in public highways, private gardens or
within 30 metres of any building or other structure.
lt is the Contractor's respons ibility to locate the barrow areas for ali kinds of materials and
obtaining, transpo1ting and placing them when needed for the executions of the Works. The
Contractor shall obtain the approval of the Engineer for the areas as weil as for the materials
he proposes to use.
Fi ll material for incorporation in the Works shall be obtained from approved borrow areas
after the completion of any tests to confirm the suitability of the material.
On completion of excavation, the Contractor shall trim, grade and leave the barrow area in a
ticly condition and shall carry out any further emthworks necessa ry to prevent accumulation of
water in the area.
Selected fill whether selected from loca lly êxcavated material or imported, shall consist of
uniform readily compactable material, free from vegetable matter, building rubbish and frozen
material, or materials susceptible to spontaneous combustion. and excludi ng clay of liquid
r limit greater than 80 and/or plastic limit greater than 55 and materials of excessively high
moisture co11tent. Clay lumps and stones retained on 75mm and 37.5 mm sieves respectively
shall be e:<ch•ded from the fillmaterial. ·
[ Materials proposed for use as selected fill shall be tested on site in accorda •.• ,· wW~' the
procedures as prescribed in BS 1377 to determine its characteristics and suitability.
r Materials proposed for use as selcctecl fil! shall be subject to the approval of the Engineer.

1.3.1.8. Compaction of Fi li
Compacted till shall consist of approved material, spread and compacted in layers
approximately hori zontal and of uniform thickncss with a slight outward slope and of a
compacted depth not exceeding 0.20 metres before compaction.
Soi! lumps larger than 0.10 metres in size shall be broken before compaction. The moi sture
t;Ontent of the soi! shall be carefully controlled either by natural drying 'd: wetting with a fine
spray. ....
During compaction, the Engineer may order either in-s itu or other tests to determine the dry
density and nature of the fi li material. Each layer shall be tested for the moisture content and
to contirm it has reached the required dry density.
If any unsound material occurs in foundations of structu res, the Contractor shall remove it and
dispose of it. The Contractor shall till the voids in the foundations so fonned with Concrete
Grade CIO.
If any unsound material occurs in pipeline trenches, the Contractor shall remove it and dispose
of it. The Contractor shall fi li the voids in the pipeline trenches with approved fil ! ma teri al.
If the Contractor encounters any material which in is his opinion may be unsound, he shall
immediately inform the Engineer who will then instruct the Contractor as to whether or not r
the said material shall be treated as unsound.
The cost of dealing with the unsound material shall be borne by the Contractor if, in the
opinion of the Engineer, the cause of unsoundness is due to failure of the Contractor to
comply with the Specification, including keeping the excavation free from water.
lt; th;;: event of any trench for pipelines exceeding the maximum allowable'.widths the trench
width shall be restored or an alternative bedding materia l used or such other remediai action
as is necessaty. L
