Rigid Body Dynamics (MENG233) : Eastern Mediterranean University Department of Mechanical Engineering

This document contains a 10-question homework assignment on rigid body dynamics for a mechanical engineering course. The questions cover topics such as particle kinematics and dynamics, projectile motion, varying acceleration, and two-stage rocket motion. Students are asked to determine quantities like displacement, velocity, acceleration, time, and minimum launch velocity from given acceleration equations and initial conditions. The assignment is due on November 4th, 2013 and was assigned by Assistant Professor Dr. Mostafa Ranjbar.

Homework #1

Submission Deadline:
4th November 2013
1- A particle travels along a straight line with a velocity ν = (12 - 3t2) m/s, where t is in seconds.

When t= 1s, the particle is located 10 m to the left of the origin. Determine the acceleration when

t= 4s, the displacement from t=0 to t=10s, and the distance the particle travels during this time

period.

2- A car is to be hoisted by elevator to the fourth floor of a parking garage, which is 48 ft above

the ground. If the elevator can accelerate at 0.6 ft/s2 decelerate at 0.3 ft/s2 and reach a maximum

speed of 8 ft/s determine the shortest time to make the lift, starting from rest and ending at rest.

3- Two particles A and B start from rest at the origin s= 0 and move along a straight line such

that aA = (6t - 3) ft/s2 and aB = (12t2 - 8) ft/s2, where t is in seconds. Determine the distance

between them when t = 4s and the total distance each has traveled in t = 4s.

4- If the effects of atmospheric resistance are accounted for, a falling body has an acceleration

defined by the equation a = 9.81[1 - ν2 (10-4)] m/s2, where ν is in m/s and the positive direction

is downward. If the body is released from rest at a very high altitude, determine (a) the velocity

when t= 5s, and (b) the body’s terminal or maximum attainable velocity (as t → ∞).

5- The velocity of a particle traveling along a straight line is ν = ν0 - ks, where k is constant. If

s= 0 when t= 0, determine the position and acceleration of the particle as a function of time.

6- Ball A is thrown vertically upward from the top of a 30-m-high-building with an initial

velocity of 5 m/s. At the same instant another ball B is thrown upward from the ground with an

initial velocity of 20 m/s. Determine the height from the ground and the time at which they pass.
7- A particle moves along a straight line with a velocity ν = (200s) mm/s, where s is in

millimeters. Determine the acceleration of the particle at s = 2000 mm. How long does the

particle take to reach this position if s = 500 mm when t = 0?

8- Ball A is thrown vertically upwards with a velocity of ν0. Ball B is thrown upwards from the

same point with the same velocity t seconds later. Determine the elapsed time t<2 ν0/g from the

instant ball A is thrown to when the balls pass each other, and find the velocity of each ball at

this instant.

9- As a body is projected to a high altitude above the earth’s surface, the variation of the

acceleration of gravity with respect to altitude y must be taken into account. Neglecting air

resistance, this acceleration is determined from the formula a= -g0[R2/(R + y)2], where g0 is the
constant gravitational acceleration at sea level, R is the radius of the earth, and the positive

direction is measured upward. If g0 = 9.81 m/s2 and R= 6356 km, determine the minimum initial

velocity (escape velocity) at which a projectile should be shot vertically from the earth’s surface

so that it does not fall back to the earth.

Hint: This requires that ν = 0 as y → ∞

10- A two-stage missile is fired vertically from rest with the acceleration shown. In 15 s the first

stage A burns out and the second stage B ignites. Plot the ν--t and s--t graphs which describe the

two-stage motion of the missile for 0 ≤ t ≤ 20 s.
