Module 43

MATH
SOLVING TWO TO THREE – STEP WORD
PROBLEMS INVOLVING DIVISION AND ANY ONE
OR TWO OF THE OTHER FUNDAMENTAL
OPERATIONS LEARNED INCLUDING MONEY

A DepEd-BEAM Distance Learning Program supported by the Australian Agency for International Development
To the Learner

Good morning! Let’s go now to a little bit complicate word

problem solving. This involve 2 to 3 operations. So what is
needed is to read, understand and analyze the problem then
solve.

Let’s Learn This

Solving 2- to 3-step word problems involving division and

any one or two of the other fundamental operations learned
including money.

Let’s Try This

A. Can you still remember the steps when solving word

problems? What are they?

B. Perform the indicated operations.

1. (23 + 17) ÷ 4 =
2. (6 x 5) + (8 ÷ 4) =
3. (2 x 8) – (63 ÷ 9) =
4. 3 x (4 + 5) ÷ 9 =
5. 54 ÷ (2 + 4) =

Check your answer using the key to correction. If your

score is 4 or 5, you may now proceed to this module. If you get 3
correct answers or below, review first the previous lessons.

Let’s Study This

Read the problem below and answer the sets of questions

that follows.

Butch sold old newspapers for 32.00 and used

bottles for 45.00. With the money, he bought notebooks
at 12.00 each. How many notebooks he bought in all?
How much money was left with him?

Are you ready to answer the first set of questions? Then

here it is.

Set A

1. What did Butch do?

2. Do you also sell old newspapers and used bottles? Why?
3. What contribution can Butch extend to his family when
selling old newspapers and used bottles?

Set B

Let’s answer Set B questions together?

1. What are asked in the problem?

• The number of notebooks Butch were able to buy out of

his money
• and the money left with him

2. What data are given in the problem?

The given data are:

Cost of the old newspapers - 32.00

Cost of the used bottles - 45.00
Cost of one notebook - 12.00

3. What is the hidden question?

160
The hidden question is the total money earned from the old
newspapers and used bottles.

4. What is the number sentence for the problem?

( 32.00 + 45.00) ÷ 12.00 = n or ( 45 + 32) ÷ 12.00 = n

5. What is the solution?

Here’s the solution and the final answer.

Step 1 Step 2
32.00 6 notebooks
+ 45.00 12 77
77.00 72
5 remaining money

Butch had bought 6 notebooks and had 5.00 left with him.

6. How to check if the answer is correct?

Multiply 6 by 12.00. Then subtract the product from

77.00 to get 5.00.

Let’s try.

12 x 6 = 72.00; 77.00 – 72.00 =

5.00

Got it clearly?

Try this problem.

Zeny bought 12 potato chips at 5.00 each and 3 bags of

candies at 15.00 each. If she paid the cashier a 200.00
peso bill, how much will her change be?

Follow the steps you have studied in the first example.

161
Let’s Do This

Solve the problem. Present your answer and solution to your

teacher.

• How much is the bicycle?

• How much is his money at hand?
• How much more does he need?
• How long will it take Archie to raise the remaining
amount?

2. The Math Club of Garita Elem. School wants to buy 500

flowerpots at 12.00 each. How much would each of the 60
members share to be able to buy the flowerpots?

Let’s Do More

1. The school janitor picked up 300 mangoes in the orchard

in a Saturday and 684 mangoes after 2 days. He divided
these mangoes equally among 4 classes. How many
mangoes did each class get?

162
Let’s Remember This

To solve 2-3 step word problems, you must:

Read and understand the problem.
Know what is asked in the problem.
Know what the given facts are.
Identify the hidden questions.
Write the number sentence.
Solve the equation.
Check if your answer is correct.

Let’s Test Ourselves

Are you ready to test the skill you learned in this module?
Solve these problems by answering the different steps in solving
problems then present your answer to your teacher for
checking.

1. The Science Club of Ladislao Diwa Elementary School

took care of the distribution of 600 narra seedlings and
720 banaba seedlings during the tree planting activity.
They divided these equally among the 12 elementary
schools in the city. How many narra seedlings will each
school get? Banaba seedlings? The total seedlings will
each school will have?

163
2. Mr. Reyes had 75,000.00. He divided the money to his
3 children. If his elder son gave 3 500 to charity, how
much money was left to him?

Let’s Consider This

Check your answer with the answer key. If you get….

21 – 25 – Excellent! You have done your work well.

16 - 20 – You need to review the items you missed
15 - You need to repeat the whole activities. Ask your
teacher or elder to help you.
