Boxandwhiskersp3 1

The document describes analyzing test score data from 15 students using a box and whiskers plot. It has the following steps: 1) List the scores from lowest to highest. 2) Find the median score of 76. 3) Find the first (66) and third (86) quartiles. 4) Identify the lowest (50) and highest (95) scores as the extremes. 5) Plot the data on a box and whiskers graph with the median, quartiles and extremes.

BOX & WHISKERS PROJECT

OBJECTIVE:

 Analyze the information (data)

 Arrange the numbers from least to greatest
 Find the median
 Find the median, Quartiles 1 (Q2), Quartiles 3 (Q3), Upper Extreme, Lower Extreme

SCENERIO:

 Mrs. Jones gave her 15 students a test. Mrs. Jones went over the test scores to see how
the students preformed. Analyze the test scores to find the median, Quartiles 2, Quartiles
3, Upper Extreme, Lower Extreme.
 So, we will take a look at the students grades and list them in order from least to greatest
o 55, 50, 67, 88, 90, 95, 78, 72, 70, 76, 62, 66, 86, 82, 80

Least Greatest
50, 55, 62, 66, 67, 70, 72, 76, 78, 80, 82, 86, 88, 90, 95
Step 1: find the median. Since median also means middle, we know we are looking for
the number in center.
 There are 15 students that took the test, so there are 15 grades (data.)
o 76 in our median and that is known to be true because there are exactly 7
grades BEFORE 76 and 7 grades AFTER the 76.

50, 55, 62, 66, 67, 70, 72, 76, 78, 80, 82, 86, 88, 90, 95

-or-
Quartile 2 (Q2)
Step 2: Find Quartile 1 and Quartile 3.
 In the same way you found the median, will be how you find Q1 and Q2.

Let’s look for the center of all the numbers BEFORE the Median 1st.

50, 55, 62, 66, 67, 70, 72, 76, 78, 80, 82, 86, 88, 90, 95

 The middle number here will be 66. It has 3 numbers BEFORE and 3 numbers
AFTER it, making 66 the Q1.

50, 55, 62, 66, 67, 70, 72, 76, 78, 80, 82, 86, 88, 90, 95
 Q3 here will be 86.

50, 55, 62, 66, 67, 70, 72, 76, 78, 80, 82, 86, 88, 90, 95
Q1 Median Q3

Step 3: Finding High and Low Extremes:

 The high extreme is asking for the largest value of data provided.
 The low extreme is asking for the smallest value of data provided

50, 55, 62, 66, 67, 70, 72, 76, 78, 80, 82, 86, 88, 90, 95

PUT DATA ON BOX AND WHISKERS PLOT

 Now that we have analyzed the data, let’s take a look at what we got!
 MEDIAN: 76
 Q1: 66
 Q3: 86
 Upper Extreme: 50
 Lower Extreme: 95
