Designed as a small home, The All Terrain Cabin, was made using the standard ISO shipping container...built grid ready, it can
be transported by train, truck, ship, airplane or helicopter as a normal shipping container. Once it arrives, it opens up to 480

17 THE PUSH BUTTON HOUSE
The Push Button House
The Push Button House, is a shipping container that opens up into an entire house. The structure is operated with a hydraulic
system, that transforms from a rectangular shipping container to a full apartment at the touch of a button. the open structure
contains six rooms spread across the container’s floor and walls. On one wall there is a double bed and bathroom complete
with a full size bathtub. in the middle, there is a kitchenette and dinning table complete with a chandelier overhead. To
complete the home, the doors of the container are lined with a library full of books. on the other wall there is a living area
with a sofa and side tables. The home ‘clearly demonstrates how the technologies of wider industry can be used to create
dynamic architectural conceits’. "It works like a flower - you push a button and the thing transforms itself."

For its holiday pop-up, Illy used a piece of functional art to preview a new espresso-making system at the Time Warner Center.
According to the folks at the Italian coffee company Illycaffè, they are as serious about art and sustainability as they are about
coffee. And that's part of the reason behind the Push Button House, the pop-up promotion-cum-arts installation at the Time
Warner Center. Designed by artist and architect Adam Kalkin, the piece is a fully functional and sustainable five-room home
(built inside an industrial shipping container) from which Illy is marketing its new Hyper Espresso system of coffee extraction.
"The Push Button House II is a vehicle that brings Illy's brand values to life and serves as a reflection of Illy's continued
commitment to innovation, the arts, and sustainable development," said Gregory Fea, president and C.E.O. of Illycaffè North
America. Primarily made of steel, with wood, plexiglass, and recycled materials, the Push Button House is controlled by a
computer (with several mechanical-engineering components inside the container) and takes about 90 seconds to open.
Unfolded, the container has a kitchen, a dining area, a bedroom, a lounge, and a library. In the kitchen, Illy displays its newest
espresso-making method, which uses coffee packaged in individual capsules.

The Future Shack, is a refugee housing unit made from a ready-made, re-used shipping container. Super-efficient and simple,
but made to last and protect, the unit uses a bare minimum of industry materials. Since it's entirely self-contained, a number
of units can be shipped together to their destination of need. It's solar powered, too.

The Art Gallery GAD, is exceptional. GAD stands all alone at the tip of the pier at Tjuvholmen, surrounded by all the activities
that have to take place when a new part of town with 1.200 dwellings, a huge amount of offices and a great deal of shops is
going to be built. These containers haven’t appeared on a wrong site and are not out of track, but they are exactly where
they suppose to be. The owner, Alexandra Dyvi, did come to the place a year ago and made up here mind; – This is where my
Gallery is going to open. Here at the harbour and then she contacted the architect.

MMW architects of Norway are responsible for these exclusive containers in grey steel and glass. Dyvi wanted a semi
temporary gallery, and in response to this MMW made it out of the same shapes that traditionally have occupied this kind of
areas ‚ containers.

The doors to the new gallery GAD opened before a year was gone after developing the ideas. A huge challenge with GAD
refers to the concept of being able to move within a few days, a week or maybe two, so the architects needed to find a
solution where also the infrastructure of the house could be demounted and remounted easily.

To make an open feeling MMW has let a huge amount of fresh crispy northern light through the building by placing circular
windows opposite each others. These shapes bring on the history from way back where at this site many of the most beautiful
ships from Oslo where built at this site. Also the traditional industry ladders/stairs gives an impression of linking it all
together with the shipbuilding industry from last century. Huge safety glasses at the end of each container give wanted
supply with water and weather, sun and sky. The start of it all came with 10 ordinary containers, insulated on the inside, and
covered with sheets of plywood and sheetrock (gwb) all painted like a classical with cube.

Uniqlo - Portable Retail Store. Mobile small scale prefab shipping container architecture.
Functioning somewhere between the style of a summer street fair (common in the city) and a fully operating retail venue, the
Uniqlo container stores were located in nine choice New York neighborhoods, including the West Village, Jones Beach, Cobble
Hill Brooklyn, Coney Island. Each had vertical strip windows cut into the exterior and was powered by an external generator.
The door and ramp opened and closed via hydraulic struts and the insides were lined inside with laminated cubes for shelves.

32 AIRY AND COMPACT
Below is an airy yet compact 1350 square foot comprising three bedrooms. The main feature of note is the use of insulated
containers into the design. Two forty-foot containers are stacked on one side and a third is cut in half and stacked on the other
creating protective walls for a two story atrium living room in the middle. Bedrooms in the upper containers where given
added width with bay windows. A stair and a bridge through the atrium connect the two upper containers to the space below.
The house was also designed to minimize energy use through passive solar design. Deep eaves minimize summer solar gain,
while allowing winter solar heating. Well placed windows supply excellent daylighting and summer ventilation. Additional
energy and water saving features such as stacked plumbing, roof rainwater collection, high efficacy lighting, and solatubes
further reduce ecological impacts.

33 THE BEACH HOUSE
California architect transforms eight shipping containers into an award-winning family residence.
Completed in 2006 in notoriously difficult to permit Redondo Beach California this was not the first container home built in
the US by any stretch but it was the first container home to gain mainstream awareness and acceptance by the majority that
saw it. The professional approach to issues like the building approval process showed many of the old guard of the alternative
housing movement that historical issues associated with Container Homes like gaining permitting approval where often
created as much by the attitudes of the applicants as by the approval authorities themselves.

In this hybrid design for the Beach container house, conventional stick-frame construction combines with eight repurposed
steel shipping containers to form the two-story home. The containers can be retrofitted off-site, helping to reduce labor costs
during installation.

To play up the industrial good looks of the containers, the homeowners chose not to cover-up the corrugated steel walls with
siding or to replace the sturdy maritime wood floors that come standard in cargo boxes. In addition to the open main living
area, there are 4 bedrooms and 3 baths.

Thanks to simple passive solar techniques, like orienting the building to the sun and the prevailing breezes, the Beach
container house remains cool and comfortable year-round. The swimming pool is also a re-purposed container.

Innovative and Efficient:
For long-term energy savings, low-flow plumbing fixtures, LED lights, and Energy Star appliances were installed throughout
the house. Stick-frame walls were insulated with UltraTouch, a recycled denim material, and the rooftops and walls of the
containers were painted with a thick coat of white ceramic insulating paint originally developed by NASA.
Airplane Hangar Doors
The Beach container house features a soaring 20-foot-high living room outfitted with glass-panel airplane hangar doors that
fold out to create a seamless indoor-outdoor living space.

discussion online about whether or not this stunning home was really built using shipping containers or was simply a modular
home.

A Prefab Sustainable Green Home Architectural Conceptual Design With High Efficiency Building Components And Systems.
Recycled and repurposed from five 40′ high-cube shipping containers the 540 Eco-Dwelling is a modular architectural design
using a composite highly insulated skin, solar panel array, and wind turbines to condition its inhabitants and produce energy.
Instead of consuming energy it is time to conserve and produce energy. By using this design vast areas of suburbia would be
transformed into sustainable communities working towards a better and less energy dependent future.

39 EASY RELOCATION
Constructed from five repurposed containers the below House in Santiago Chile makes the cut of the top most influental
shipping container homes ever built because it is one of the very few houses that can truly claim the potential for easy
relocation.
An often quoted benefit of container based construction is the ability to easily move the house at a later date, however there
are in reality few houses ( even in this line up ) that could be relocated practically, this house is as close as it gets to relocation
capability and remain a “real” house. The design brief was to design and construct a house quickly, that was earthquake
resistant, at low cost and be to be no more than 115m2 in size.

40 HIGH EFFICIENCY BUILDING
This three bedroom, three bathroom 1860 sqft house is an exercise in high efficiency building. Some of the “green elements”
include SIPs incorporated in roof and floors, on-demand hot water heater a high efficiency AC system and energy recovery
ventilation system. Bamboo flooring and low-VOC paints and the use of fiberboard products.
Energy efficient appliances Includes dual-flush toilets and efficient plumbing/fixtures In addition, the most expensive
elements of the home, the structural elements and mechanical core, were partially prefabricated in a shop for efficiency.
Overall the house is a fascinating display of containers, SIPs, energy efficiency, and green materials.

Two twenty foot shipping containers were purchased to create a cabin complete with kitchen, dining room, living room with a
wood burning stove, laundry room and two queen beds. The two cabins are connected by a middle section loft and roof made
out of "(3) 4 1/2" X 11 1/4" fir beams made up of (3) 2X12's thru bolted and glued" and a glass door entrance. The cabin is
partially powered by solar power arrays and connected to a rainwater cistern making this building an ecologically sustainable
vacation home.

The Mobile Dwelling Unit was originally conceived for individuals constantly moving around the globe. It travels with its
