PREFACE
Social Internship is very important for a student as he/she gets to learn and gain
experience. At the end of my 2nd year of BBA-MBA program, I did my summer social
internship at an old age home, Manish Singh Memorial Trust. It is a care home for
aged which serves and care for those senior citizens who do not have anyone to look
after them.
The main objective of this internship was to get knowledge about how CSR works and
what are the problems faced by our senior citizens and to utilize our management
skills in a better way. It was a great learning experience.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
I did my social internship with Manish Govil Memorial Trust, an old age home with
serve those who do not have anyone to look after them. During my internship period,
I served many senior citizens who are connected with the Manish Govil Memorial
Trust. I with a team of other passionate service providers arranged many necessary
basic needs for the aged citizens who requires our help. There are several basic
needs like food, water, money which are necessary for any individual to survive.
Helping them living a comfortable life gives me a physiological satisfaction. The main
objective of my internship was to spend time with the inmates of the trust and make
them feel happy and loved. I used to interact with them and listen to their
experiences. I organised many events to make them involve and participate.
I gained a good experience while working with the trust. I became aware of my
responsibilities and the internship made me disciplined, punctual and independent
individual. It was a great learning experience.
PROBLEMS FACED BY SENIOR CITIZENS
Indian society has witnessed an erosion of traditional values which has undermined
the traditional position and society of the elderly. The family has undergone a sea
change like the decline in the joint family system, fewer children due to acceptance
of small family norms, increasingly participation of women in economic activities and
migration of younger members from rural areas to cities for employment. Moreover,
the proportion of the elderly is increasing in society in relation to the total population
due to better health care leading to prolongation of people’s lives. According to
Population Census 2011 there are nearly 104 million elderly persons (aged 60 years
or above) in India; 53 million females and 51 million males.
Old people nowadays, are facing many problems in their day to day life. They feel
increasingly neglected and are often cast away as burden by their children and thus
have to face isolation even while living with them. People are becoming more self-
centred and are running after their satisfaction and thus fail to take care of their old
parents. Old age homes are increasing in number year after year. Old people are
forced to live a lonely life at an old age home away from their children. They are left
alone to face the hardships even at this stage of their life. This loneliness makes them
feel weak. They lack emotional support. They are surrounded by many problems like
physical problems, psychological problems and financial problems. According to them
a phenomenon called ‘grand dumping’ is becoming common in urban areas these
days as children are being increasingly intolerant of their parents’ health problems.
In India, unlike USA, parents do not leave their children on their own after they turn
18, but children find it hard to accept the fact that there are times when parents
want to feel the love that they once shared with them. There are times when parents
just want to relax and want their children to reciprocate their care. Every
parent wants to see their child grow and be successful but no parent wants their
child to treat them like an unnecessary load on their responsibilities.
Forget the rights that the elderly enjoy in India. Think on moral grounds. Why do we
tend to forget that the reason we are in this world is our parents, the reason we
studied is our parents, the reason we were alive all this while is our parents, the
reason we survived all the diseases is our mother’s care. The hands who made us
walk is our parents’. But when our time came to show our respect, to reciprocate the
love, to show our gratitude, we back out.
But the truth is that even when they are counting their last breath, they are still thinking of
themselves!
MANISH GOVIL MEMORIAL TRUST

Manish Govil Memorial Trust is a social welfare organisation which started a project
“Abha Manav Mandir Varishtha Nagarik Sewa Sadan”, a care home for aged. It was
established to serve and care those senior citizens who have no one to look after
them or who are free from family liabilities and want to serve the society for their
remaining life period. The trust provides a family like atmosphere where residents
live in safe and compassionate surroundings. It also provides medical, health and
nutritional care, apart from providing emotional support. This Senior Citizens’ Care
Home is a Centre where elders can spend their twilight years with dignity, respect
and with a new meaning in life.
Home is a place where a person feels comfortable, can be himself and greet the
world in his own way. Abha Manav Mandir is a home which is designed to enhance
the dignity, independence and individuality of their residents. Helping seniors live the
quality of life they want and deserve is their commitment, privilege and joy. They
believe in celebrating life and life begins at home. Life is precious and worth
celebrating each day. A senior life, is an accumulation of richness like
accomplishments, loves and learnings, trials and successes. Abha Manav Mandir is a
community where that richness continues to grow. The inmates, males and females
feel happy and enjoy their life.
Currently, there are 8 trustees and 30 residents in the Trust with S.C. Govil as the
Chairman of the Trust.

and peaceful society”.
 To act as a centre where the knowledge and experiences of life of the senior
citizens are utilized in a constructive manner so as to contribute more
meaningfully to both, the residents and the society.
 To provide companionship, emotional support, recreation facilities and
activities to overcome social isolation.
 To provide independence to senior citizens in daily life, and to re-establish high
values of life nurtured by them.

SALIENT FEATURES:
 Residential blocks along with auditorium and prayer room
 Living room equipped with indoor games facilities
 Clinic-cum- Health care centre
 Dining hall with modern kitchen
 Parks with greenery and pollution free environment
 Yoga centre
My main project was to make old people feel loved. I always tried to make them feel
happy by making them participate in activities that we organised. It was quite difficult
to think of the activities which people above 70 would love to play but with their
cooperation and enthusiasm, I was able to make them remember their good old
times by organising recreation activities.

ACTIVITIES
1. YOGA CAMP:
Yoga camp was organised by art of living from 5th to 12th June. I helped the members
of art of living in organising the camp. I also helped the inmates of the trust in
performing yoga exercises. Every day, it used to start at 6am. It was good to perform
yoga with them. They enjoyed doing yoga and used to feel relaxed. After they were
done with yoga, they were served with healthy food like fruits, sprouts, etc.

2. INTERACTION WITH THE INMATES:

During my social internship, I learned lot many things. After interacting with the
inmates of the trust and listening to them, I came to know the pain and isolation they
had to suffer when they were left all alone by their loved ones. Listening to them
made me understood that what they all wanted was just the love, care and someone
to listen their life experiences. Interaction with them taught me many things. They
shared their life experiences with me. It was like “growing old with the wise”. I shared
my college instances with them. Every day I used to go there and talk to different
people. We talked and laughed together. Talking to them was a great feeling. They all
treated me as their granddaughter.

3. GAMES
I organised many activities for them like tambola, guess the movie, passing the parcel
and antakshari. It took us 2 hours to play those games. They were so enthusiastic and
fun-loving just like the small children. I could see the happiness on their face. They
were able to recollect their childhood memories. Some of them sang a song, some
recited a poem, some shared their experiences. Bringing a smile on their faces was
my way of showing care towards them. Their smile made me happy.

4. MANGO AND TEEJ PARTY:

I with the help of Rotary Club, Meerut organised a mango and teej party for the
inmates of the trust. I helped in the decoration and managing things. The trust was
decorated as a village. Teej party was from 5pm to 8pm. There were activities related
to teej like teej songs, games, swing. They were offered snacks. From 8pm to 10pm
there was mango party followed by the dinner. It was a great feeling in celebrating
festivals with them. They were like our family members. They were very happy. They
felt loved and cared.
CONCLUSION

During my internship, I realised that our single effort towards helping seniors live
quality lives can make them happy and loved. This internship made me clear about
my responsibility towards my parents and society. I learned the skill of event
management, teamwork and leadership. This made me a better person. I was able to
understand more about elder’s problem and the way they deal with it. During my
internship period, I realize that observation is a main element which will help you to
get the solution to any problem. Moreover, the project indirectly helps me to be
independent, disciplined, and patient, initiative taker and the ability to solve
problems and time management. Besides, my communication skills got improved
while communicating with others.
To sum up this internship gave me many sweet memories with senior citizens. It was
a different and great experience to spend time with the senior citizens. I would like to
say that, parents should always be loved by their children irrespective of their age.
Is the youth too insensitive to the elder? Passing comments at an old man walking
slowly on the road and disturbing the flow of the traffic are our ethics? Come on
youth, stand up against such injustice. DO NOT TREAT YOUR PARENTS LIKE BURDEN
ESPECIALLY WHEN THEY NEED YOU.
Once again, I would like to appreciate all those who made my internship a great
experience for me.
